Steam 1.0 Problems using, anyone?

I have installed Steam 1.0, made my account, but I can't seem to get any of the additional games to load (Counterstrike, namely). When I hit the "Install" button for Counterstrike, the whole app freezes up as Not Responding.

Anyone know what's causing this, how to fix it?

Steam apparently is still really unstable, most people in the community i play in have been looking at the "Preparing to play counterstrike" window for about 3 hours.... What was so hard about updating w/ csv16full.exe? This steam is such bullshit...

Its network overload not a problem with steam itself, I think.

I dunno how long you guys have been playing Counterstrike but in many ways its nothing new. When a new CS version would come out, since the community is sooo huge... so much bandwidth is being eaten on varius mirror sites that they go down completely or slow to a crawl.

My CS install has 44 minutes left to go on Cable... Im not really worried about it considering my experiences with past releases.

exactly steam is just overloaded as everyone and their dog is trying to get 1.6 and heaps of other thing at the same time, it should be better in a few days,

man i still remember when cs beta 7 came out, heaps of sites went back to plain text form so the servers could handle the traffic, it was insane. So this is basically the same, nothing to worry about

Can someone explaine to me what steam is in a nutshell?

I don't play CS anymore and dont give a crap about that, but was wondering what it will mean to HL2.

That rumor that I've heard is that it will be a closed code distribution service. Meaning, you pay them a monthly fee and you can download/play Counterstrike, TFC, and whatever other mods. Or, you don't pay them and you just pay for each mod individually. Hopefully Valve will not pull a Nintendo and force all mods to be available only through Steam, to force people to pay lotsa money for what used to be an active free-mod market.

Errr so you mean if some joe blow makes a mod for HL2 it cannot be distributed by hm for free and can only be implemented through Steam?

That sounds like a death blow to the modding community to me.

Fuck Steam. The reason why FPS's are so damn popular is that you don't have to pay to play them like MMPORG. It's just fucking sick what this could lead to.

I just want to get CS downloaded so I can play it man. :-(

The implications that this could have for future game distribution are pretty bad. It looks to be that people will even have to be running the internet with an account on steam if they want to get an update to the game. How lame is that?

Update:

Fileplanet has released a Full Patch for HL, CS 1.6 and TFC for those of us having troubles getting it off Steam. It will run through Steam, but is at 374 MB and will at least let people like me who can't download from it yet get going.

Theres no charge for using steam. All that is required is a cdkey for any Valve game, and you automatically are entitled to all its benefits.

In the future games will be distributed through steam in addition to retail. You can also subscribe for a monthly fee to get access to any of the games available through steam without actually purchasing any product all at once. So for instance you subscribe, you download HL2 off of it for your regular 10$ a month or whatever. You can play HL2 as long as you continue to subscribe, as well as the mods etc. Then say TF2 comes out, you get it as well for that same subscribtion fee.

How practical is all this? It remains to be seen... But, its hardly the downfall of gaming to provide extra options to people.

exactly, when its first released it will have a few issues but they will be sorted, and you only pay if you want to get hl2 and stuff from the net, otherwise its free for all mods as long as you legaly own one valve product

It has CS included, only problem is that it wants to update DoD which I thought I did already

with HL2, you pay for one 'licence key' and then can play your 'copy' of HL2 on any PC, still only paying the upfront cost. Using this method means for things like TF2 etc you will have to pay a fee (if they are released as exclusive content and not a free-MOD that is...) The other option is a monthly fee which gets you anything valve releases over steam.

In regards to getting CS 1.6 going, www.ausgamers.com have a version of steam with it included in the cache (not sure if other file places have it [edit: didnt see post above regarding this] ) but thats what i used to get going. I am on dial up in australia... and i can play on US servers almost normally in 1.6 (no idea why).

Well I downloaded the Full Patch thing and I still can't get CS To open.. get froze on the "preparing to start cs" screen. Sucks..

The main problem with Steam right now is the fact that they don't have sufficient bandwidth to support their users.

I downloaded the first version of Steam where everyone was getting problems, couldn't play any games.

Then I downloaded the other pack with Steam + CS and HL, and it works fine now. Except I still can't play DoD, and I havent tried any other games than CS.

Seemed like mine was working fine. Downloaded DoD and it worked fine. Downloaded Opposing Force and now Opfor won't work and I get random lock ups on starting DoD and sometimes CS. Also get massive memory usage now too
Gonna try to reinstall.
