Starcraft II....Thoughts?
Well guys, i was reading up on starcraft ghost, at blizzard.com, and was reading the faq. Someone asked the question.
Q: Is this StarCraft II? A: No. Q: Will there be a StarCraft II? When? A: Although we have not made any announcements and do not have a development or release timeline, we do fully intend to revisit the world of StarCraft on PC at some point in the future. I assumed that they would make a sequal to this awesome game. But I didnt know they came out and directly said it. Just thought I would share. |

I spoke once with Bill Roper about this (before he left the company). There's a lot of interest in doing this - and it's guaranteed money - but they also want to expand their library a little. I would suspect it's less than five years away, though - probably under three.
First, though, I suspect another Warcraft III expansion is in the works.

Yeah, I can't say I'm too excited about StarCraft Ghost either. Probably because I'm mainly a PC gamer
I'd love a StarCraft 2 like basically everyone else. I'm sure it will come one day.. but not too soon. 2006 at the earliest I'd say. |

well they could take starcraft and add their immense creativity to it: it would appease the masses, create something new, and if it sucks... they dont have to make SC3. but if they put all their possible creativity into0 something new and it sucked, their credibility would rdrop drastically. allt heyw ould have to do is take starcraft, up the graphics sounds and such, and completely take out zerg (they were kinda obliterated completely, from what i remember of starcraft) but then their going to have the protoss/zerg cross-breed (i heard something about that, it would rule.. what better than 500 superfast dragoons that can self-heal?) and add a new race or three to the mix. it would have problems with balance, but if blizzard is good at anything its making balanced games. i think they should defintily do SC2... but they shouldnt wear themselves out on it. just make it kick ass and move on. diablo 3 anybody? ^_^

They won't release a Diablo III or whatever, because the team that worked on that, I believe is working on WoW right now. |

The team that worked on Diablo / Diablo II (Blizzard North) is no longer part of Blizzard. They left and started their own company, the name of which escapes me at the moment. The people working on WoW are those that worked on Warcraft III. As for Starcraft II, they will probably not be devoting a lot of time to it until WoW and a WoW expansion are released.

Blizzard has never done a second expansion pack for a game. With World of WarCraft coming out, I find it doubtful that they will publish a second expansion pack for a game in the WarCraft franchise.
As for StarCraft2, I can't wait, but wait I will... It'll be interesting to see how they do it. StarCraft has more down n dirty nitty gritty graphics, far from the cartoony fantasy styles of WarCraft. They might require a new engine, or the WarCraft engine might be able to branch out? I don't know the technical aspects. I also wonder if SC2 would keep the RPG elements of War3, expand upon them, or go to more classic RTS roots. WoW will have to tide me over when it comes out.

World of WarCraft is Blizzard's upcoming MMORPG. The beta for it is planned to begin later this year. Release probably late next year.
There was recently an article in Computer Gaming World on WoW... it Announced new races so was a big exclusive, but its also a good all around preview, and they had hands on time with the game itself. Theres high quality scans of the article .here Even in its early form they really enjoyed the game. WoW sounds like the first MMORPG that the masses will want to play

While I also would love a SC2, I'd like to see a great company like Blizzard to start another fresh new franchise rather than sit on their Diablo / StarCraft / Warcraft games.

Possibly - but I don't think the graphic styles really match up with what StarCraft would have.
Oh and to clarify, those that left Blizzard North will certainly be a blow - but it doesn't rule out the possibility of another Diablo game. Blizzard North still exists, is still owned by Blizzard, and still has the ultimate rights to the franchise. Only four or so people left Blizzard North (including Bill Roper ) so there is still a substantial team left over. They're currently working on the Diablo 1.10 patch - and I'm sure there is another project in the works as well.

Blizzard North currently has 2 unannounced projects other than the Diablo 2 1.1 patch. As JcL said, Blizzard North is still a part of Blizzard, they have not seperated off as seretogis said. 4 members of the head of Blizzard North left the company, but the company itself is still there.
The team that made WC3 could possibly be doing SC2 right now or they could be on something different. There are 2 teams at Blizzard, the ones that made WC3 and the ones making World of WarCraft. Blizzard North used to have 1 team but apparently now has 2, but neither of teams could be working on SC2.

I thought Bill Roper specifically told some magazine he left Blizzard because he didnt want to work on anything with "Diablo" and "3" in the title and that this is what he would be doing if he had stayed....
World of Warcraft will be awesome but they recently announced the beta test and the game itself for that matter are delayed at least 3 months. The beta now won't even start (public beta at least) until after christmas which means early february at the earliest. |

The beta won't start til the fourth quarter. That could be anywhere in October November December I believe.
I have not heard of that interview with Bill Roper and I do not believe that was the case. In other interviews he's expressed difficulties with working under Vivendi and not knowing their financial positions (they're trying to sell games unit) and some other stuff. He hasn't really given a direct up front answer, but discontent with the owners seems to be the most often spoken of cause (by Roper himself). Aside from that, with D3 not yet announced I don't think Roper would be hinting at its existance to any degree.

Ghost looks like its gonna be pretty cool. Then again, I seem to have bought my consoles for 3rd person action games, and fighters, so its right up my alley. I really hope theres gonna be a Starcraft II, but with Blizzards meticulous pace, we're probably not gonna see it for a couple of years... Diablo 2 anybody?

Starcraft was delayed for an incredible amount of time much to the dismay of the gaming community. It appears that the woes of the gamers were soon forgotten by the grandure of the game itself. I have full confidence that, whenever it may be, SCII would be a title worth waiting for.
Its pointless to bitch about how long its gonna be because its not going to accellerate its release. And why would you want to anyhow? To get a buggy game? F that. Patches are no excuse to think its ok to release a game before its done. Blizzards snails pace is fine with me. Just my 2 p. |

All of my favorite games are Blizzard games, I still play a D2 mod here and there. Their snail pace is what makes them great. Other companies shove their half-baked games out the door in time for Christimas, but bliz just releases their games "when it's done". I think WoWC will be their biggest challenge yet , however, considering EVERY mmorg i have heard of, played or read about has sucked. (first 14 hours of EQ=...killing rats...?)
That being said, I have to say i feel a bit betrayed as a hardcore PC gamer. It feels like bliz kinda blew off all thirty six kajillion SC fans by making Ghost a console only title. BTW- the secret SC models in War3 looked kinda stupid IMO... PC>consol |

i think they're stupid if they don't make starcraft 2, do you guys know how big starcraft has gotten in korea? they have it on tv for christ's sakes. i still play about 5 - 10 games of starcraft daily. i can't wait for starcraft 2 and i hope it's more like starcraft than warcraft 3 also. anyone here a heavy starcraft gamer too? if so give me a pm or something.

Well here I go
First; Quote:
And because they have a new Warcraft and Starcraft game coming out soon, I tend to believe that another game in either of these two franchises is not in the foreseeable future. I also don't think they will make another WC3 expansion. The story of WoW picks up shortly after FT and will constantly be evolving. An expansion would have to significantly altar the game's world and WoW would eventually catch up to it. It would seem most likely that it will be a brand new series, or possibly Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2. Plus, they would most likely wait untill gamers get tired with WoW so they would be more responsive to another strategy game. |

Actually juan is correct. Another developer is behind the game... just off the top of my head nihilistic software, something like that. If you would search around that link you provide you would find evidence of this.
Naturally, Blizzard is still involved a good deal in the title. Its much like the relationship between id and Raven.
