What us the greatest gaming console of all time
I'm a Nintendo guy, always have been. But as far as breakthrough performance, the Atari 2600 was the greates ever. More games than you could shake a stick at, and difficulty level? Fogetaboutit, some were downright impossible.
|
My first console was the NES so I didn't get to play many games on older consoles. So for me I think the greatest console ever is the SNES. There were all kinds of games that I absolutly loved. Of which I still enjoy replaying them today. Then the N64 came out and I lost all faith in Nintendo. I'm more of a computer gamer now but I still love my SNES.
|
Just moved to the Dark Side (Xbox), and I gotta say it rocks for most stuff.Like having HDD and setting up my own soundtracks. Xbox Live kicks as well, can't wait for Return to Castle Wolfenstein..
Drawback for me is the Games seems like Sony have the best ones tied up (Vice City springs to mind, although I prefer it on the PC 'cause u can mod it.) |
can = 'cause
doh! |
this almost like asking which child you love the most!!
I have to say..... i never imagined i'd say this, but the PSX. great, great games, lots of games, and plenty of the snes and nes games i loved so much, too. |
first place pc :D (I know it is not a game console)
second place Xbox better specs than ps2 third place: ps2 with the most games (except pc) |
I would have to go with PS2 due to backward compatability. For old school I would pick Colecovision. It had awesome graphics.
|
Super Nintendo, hands down.
|
I really liked the Colecovision. It kicked total ass. Especially Smurf Rescue.
|
I hope that's not sarcasm.....The Smurf game kicked ass.....:) First game I can ever remember playing, sad, but true...
For my money, I think that the Gamecube is pretty great. I've yet to see a bad game for it. And even though Super Monkey Ball sucks, it's still very pretty. If I want adult games I'd pick up my X-Box. If I want Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and the like I have to pick up my Gamecube. Thus far, it has failed to disappoint |
SNES has definitely been one of the better systems I've played.
|
My pick is Nintendo. The simplicity of the games will never be recreated.
|
Super Nintendo:
Final Fantasy AND Super Mario World? What more could a guy ask for? |

on topic: SNES. no contest. |
probably GBA... never owned a SNES, but downloaded a few roms.... great, even if they are outdated graphics wise
I wish Nintendo never did backstab sony.... they were orginally going to make a CD player add on for the SNES.... but nintendo went to phillips for the stupid CD-I games, and sony decided to make the PSX.... and the rest you know... |
Overall, I'd say PC. The online play just destroys everything. No other platform comes even close if you like FPS, RTS, and MMO games. I'd take PSX second because of its RPGs. Third either SNES or N64 (party games).
|
Nintendo 64 was the first console I bought games for religiously and read magazines and stuff on it. I'd have to say that, and the PC of course =)
|
I loved the classic nes...so many good games..the original ps was great too...was way ahead of it's time......i'm more of a pc guy now.
|
I've seen it mentioned so many times and I will have to agree to the SNES. I loved Super Metroid. I wanted to get the new Nintendo for the new Metriod but I already have a PSX2 that I don't play.
|
SNES, of course. I just finished Metroid Fusion on the GBA and MAN, I love this game.
|
i am a faithful nintendo follower, i have had every system made by nintendo (except virtual boy because it was horrible), if i had to choose one of my systems i would take my SNES because of one reason, super metroid.

The greatest console I ever had the pleasure of owning was my Dreamcast. I don't think I got that kinda milage out of a console since the SNES. Of course back in '99 it was way ahead of it's time, especially with online play about 2 years before PS2 and the rest. Sure it was only 56K, but anyone that played on SegaNet back then wasn't complaining. Most the games were classic too. Too bad Sega dropped the ball on it though. Bastards.
SNES was amazing too, and still is as far as I'm concerned. The Saturn was a hell of a machine too. :D |
Turbographix 16, or the Neo Geo MVS system..
NEO GEO and SNK go together like bankrupty and obscurity.. and that's how i like it. Keeps the stupid out :) |
The toploader NES that came out later on. All the benefit of owning an NES without having to jiggle games in a specific way after owning one for a decade.
|
SNES
Greatest game ever: Super Metroid |

NES - tons of games and very simple

ahh the good ole days. |
NES...
That is the system that made Video Games a MULTI-BILLION dollar industry. As far as Power...XBOX. (Until the next sytem comes out) Then the one after that...then after that...etc. |
Not really the greatest gaming console, but the one that I spent hundreds and possibly thousands of hours in front of was the trusty old NES.
I remember playing games like the original Zelda (can't remember if it had a special title) and the original Mario Bros. for hours and hours upon end. And I also remember blowing into the damn thing whenever it wouldn't work. But at the moment my console of choice would have to be the Xbox, almost a half year or so since I got HALO and it's still getting a play evey second day. |
Mario Kart - SNES.!!
Me and a friend have left his snes on for about a month now to leave the scores accumulating ;) I think its like 140 - 200 or something right now |
My fav was/is the SNES. so many good games, aesthetically pleasing, great controllers, and hey, it was Nintendo!
|
SNES is the greatest... i still have it in my garage, with lotsa carts (i use an emulator if i wanna play now)
|
I would like to revive my SNES. I just need an RF switch or whatever and I will be good to go.
|
NES was the best system ever. That was back when games were made to be fun instead of look good.
|
NES had by far the greatest number of replayable games for the time I was growing up. SNES came about about the time I was losing interest in consoles and picking up the PC. Emulators for those old games I have are great because my NES finally croaked about 2 years ago.
|
SNES is the greatest. Wide range of games of any type you could want. after snes nintendo just went downhill
|
I have a great Atari emulator with over 500 roms if any one is interested
|
THE PC. everyone has A PC! its like a tv... u only buy a better graphics card just like buying a new console. plus all the games u ever owned on pc are still compatible... not like the crap consoles.
|
for me nothing is better then the 8 bit NES. I had so many good times on that system. And still play Mike Tysons Punchout on an emulator.
|
have to say SNES
Super Metroid, love that game |
I think I have to say a tie between NES and SNES. It just doesn't get better than that stuff. (wish this thread was a poll, hehe)
|
Most of the posts seem to be for the SNES, what happened to Nintendo that made them number 3 instead of number 1? Or are the older systems better because they have more games?
|
No doubt Playstation 1 - It revolutionised console market !
|
I'd have to go with PS2, just becuase of it's backwards compatibility. But I do want to give some thanks for many hours wasted to these great games not on the PlayStation Platform:
N64 - 007 Golden Eye (Best Shooter Ever. Period.) Dreamcast - Soul Calibur (Best Fighter Ever. Period.) And the PC isn't a console...That's just cheating. |
Super Metroid
Chronotrigger Final Fantasy Super Mario World Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and much, much more... DUH, the answer is: SNES! |
Indeed Nintendo is #3 in sales, but not in profits. I believe they are still more profitable than the other two.
And as for why they have slipped in popularity... I think it's because they demand such control of the games released on their system. As a company, they micromanage everything. Hence developers don't like working with them as much as they do with other companies that give them more freedom (and more money--Nintendo is very stingy). However, I think Nintendo is still making some of the best games anywhere. Metroid Prime and the new Zelda are both amazing, and games like Pikmin & Animal Crossing show that they're still innovative... Just a little out of touch. |
For gaming memories--NES (U,D,U,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,A,B,Select, Start)
But for pure enjoyment I would say PS2. The Grand Theft Autos are enough reason. No games like those on the market anywhere. |
For me it's a toss up between the Super Nintendo and the Gamecube. I've always been a Nintendo kid. There's even a Virtual Boy packed away somewhere in my basement. As far as the big three go right now Nintendo definitely has the most innovative games coming out.
If only they hadn't back-stabbed Sony indeed. But Sony had all the publishing rights for the SNES CD drive they were going to make; Nintendo definitely had the short end of the stick on that deal. If they hadn't dumped them, they might be in an even worse position than they are now. |
I like portability.
I would have said Gameboy...but i loved my GameGear more when it came out. hmmm....i might still say Gameboy. Thats a tough one. okay, GameGear! |
The Neo Geo!!
this system was one of the better ones that never got off the ground, from the SNK games to the metal slug games this was one of the best platforms ever to rock the 2d gaming world :)
|
snes would have to win it
|
I'm going to have to go with the Atari 2600. If only for its replay value. I can't see me enjoying sitting down some saturday afternoon twenty years from now and enjoying playing my xbox or gamecube like I do now with my atari. But that being said, there's nothing like picking up a ho in either Grand Theft Auto III or Vice City.

Intellivision.... it had the first rpg's and they were pretty damn fun too.
But really probably the SNES and Dreamcast. |
I would vote for NES, just because it was so cool at the time. I'll never be as impressed by any new console, as I was by NES back in the day. The freakin light gun seemed like a miracle, you know?
|
Dreamcast then SNES, then PS
|
It's either the N64 or the almighty Neo Geo (Cartridge version).
Evey since I played Mario Kart, Mischief Makers, Ocarina Of Time, SM64, The King Of Fighters series and the Real Bout series, I have been hooked. Oh, and the Mega Drive (Genesis). Second only to the above. |
Um... THE SEGA CD!!! I can remember saving up for it and paying $280.99 for it from the base exchange... I was so excited that I never came to grips that it sucked ass... not even now...
|

Okay... I'll probably burn in hell for this... but I've got to say the XBox. Not that I'm pro microsoft or anything, but when you modify this thing, you've got one of the most versatile gaming systems ever created! I mean, how many other game systems could you get linux running on?!? Hell... now they are making emulators for it, so you can even play many of the old classics from other consoles on it as well!
Versatility at its best... |
I've liked most consoles I've played on. NES, PSX, PS2, GameCube, Dreamcast, X-box, but SNES easily stole the most hours of my life away from me :D
|
SNES hands down
|
The best for me was N64, I haven't gotten my GameCube, yet. ;)
|
Double post blues...
|
Make that a triple...:hmm:
|
Dreamcast is the greatest in my opinion. Awesome games, awesome online play, awesome memory cards...it's just plain awesome. I haven't played any other console more.
|
Calecovision.
Game: Mousetrap |
How could you not enjoy the Snes? THE console of all time!
|
Atari 7800. Just because :)

SNES without a doubt.
It has the best games ever made. |
The Atari 2600 has to be the greatest console system. Many of the games were so well crafted that the gameplay, the fun, was perfected. It stands out all the more because of the mediocrity it was surrounded by at the time. Perhaps most significantly, the games were ground breaking; most of todays games borrow from the themes and ideas dreamed up for the Atari 2600.
|
Gonna have to go with SNES. I guess that's why I like my GBA SP so much since it's basically a portable SNES.
|
I'm going to have to say Atari 2600. So many hours, weeks, months, years were spent with that console playing countless games that were superbly made for that time frame.
A tight second would have to be the PS2. |
N64. Most of the games that came out on that console had the best quality and were the most fun IMO. Zelda 64, Goldeneye, Mario 64, etc.
|
Favorite console growing up was the genesis, but I've really come to love my PS2. Had some great gaming moments on it, plus I can play all of my old PS1 favs.
|
For sheer cultural impact, it's ALL about the NES.
What other lump of plastic could turn Mario and Link into household names? |
