gamespy, and various alternatives... your opinions please.
Here's the thing; I enjoy the occassional game of UT, UT2k3, and Quake 3. I've been playing for a few years now and although I'm not the best at any of them I like to play online every once in a while.
My question for you all is that what is the best software to use to find servers for online play? I'm not a huge fan of Gamespy just because they are ever so persistent in making you pay for their services, and downloads, and clicking their banners, and all that good stuff. Am i stuck with using gamespy, or is there some fantastic alternative that you guys know of that I don't? I don't mind installing Gamespy if i have to, but I wanted to check before i went and started the Download and install. UT2k3 has a collection of servers within the actual game, so it's not the problem. The main struggle is finding servers for UT and Q3. |
WoN.. thats the way to do it. Though I used to play MW4 at MSN..and that was alright. The Zone I think it was...
|
Dunno how much help i can give ya... but i use gamespy 3d and enjoy it quite a bit. Arcade is a rancid pile of shit however if you ask me.

I use the Eye... All Seeing Eye.

life time subscription
i use gamespy, it is full featured and fast
the only thing tho is that i have a life time subscribtion reg code cause i bought the share ware back in the day when it was only Qspy. Ahh the wonders of share ware, i think those 10 bucks was my best online/software purchase to date, nothing has come close to value i have gotten out of it. |
Ut also has an ingame browser IIRC...
I also use ASE (All Seeing Eye) It wokrs great is amazingly fast, free, easy to use.... its great. *free as in: if you buy it you have a few extras like a larger buddylist and stuff... |
I think i've heard of the ASE. From what i can recall, it was supposed to be just dandy.
i'll give it a shot, and i'm also installing gamespy 3d, just to see if it's anything like i remember it. thanks for the input, i appriciate it. oh, and tokaok, looks like you lucked out :) |
I tend to use the games' respective built-in server browsers because hey, that's one less step I have to take to start playing, but I do have ASE installed and I find ASE to be much less irritating than LameSpy on those rare occasions when I do use it, because the interface is simple, minimal, and ad-free.

All seeing eye, end of discussion
|
Yeah, I usually use the in-game browser to find games. Maybe one day I'll get ASE or just use Gamespy, but until then...I'm fine I guess. :)
|
To those of you that know the eye...we have seen the light!
|
You cannot go wrong with The All Seeing Eye. I don't use anything else, and it's worth the registration fee if you love it enough to support them. Otherwise, it works just as fine, and it's free.
