Total Annihilation, anybody still play?
Ever since picking this up while waiting for Starcraft this has been the only RTS I've continuously played. Great variety, great gameplay, great gaphics for it's time (still decent today), and grat physics.
I love this game because it just plays "right". In other games a ground unit simply couldn't click on a "flying" (usually hovering stupidly) attacker. In TA I at least have the choice of trying, I know the projectiles will not hit, and will instead probably land on my own forces, but I enjoy that instead of simply being unable to issue the command, I know a tank couldn't hit a plane because it tracks too slow, and the projectile isn't fast enough. I love playing on common sense instead of obscure, rock can't attack paper, rules. This is also just about the only game that treats aircraft halfway realistically. Instead of the sleek looking futuristic planes in Starcraft that just hovering there, TA planes actually fly around, and fast. If TA planes are moving, they're going fast, and don't stop in midair for a bio break out the side of the cockpit. Anyhow, I'm just curious as to how many others still play routinely. I just can't stand any of the new RTS games. |
yeah this was truely a great game. so much fun and constantly had new units coming out. (as if too few units were a problem) this games drawback was mostly the fact that there were too many units. i still like it though. the commander was so badass. after about 100-200 kills his dgun gets insane!!!

I wasn't aware that ANYONE preferred this game over Blizzard's RTS offerings. More power to you, I guess. I personally would rather play Starcraft than virtually anything else on the PC...
I loved this game when I played it. I had the sudden urge to play it a few months back but, alas, I was unable to find the CD :( :(
My own CD is terribly scratched up for use. Luckily, my extensive pirating experience allowed me to create a copy both on my computer and another cd, so I'm not too worried about the original becoming too damaged.
No.
Oh HELLS yes. Best RTS ever. So open-ended, what with how easy to make new units, maps, and AI modules. I just can't find anyone to play against anymore.
I actually played a multi-player game of it the other night. It really is one of the best RTSs ever. And how many games this old do you know with such a thriving community?

Tribes...and some would argue that Tribes 2 is old
but those aren't RTS :p
TA is hot shit.
I see myself installin again in the future for some Brawler action! |
TA is me and my friends main LAN party game, we usually do a "comp stomp" and just build up kagoneths and kill the computers. It's surprising how many mods there still are out there, the community is thriving right now. We use a unit pack with something like 230 or so new units called TAUCP which makes the games much more interesting.
TA is better than WC3 and Starcraft. It IS the best RTS EVER.
Best RTS game ever. I played that thing until I couldn't stomach it anymore. Kind of like hearing your favorite song one too many times.
Still, of all the games I've owned, that was the best in graphics, music, sound FX and mods. What happened to Kingdoms? That game sucked... |
Most consider Kingdoms the result of Chris Taylor leaving. I would like to think the rest of the team is also competent, but ych, they had to make a special effort to make kingdoms that bad.
Was an amazing game... I was surprised that TA didn't comletely take off and have some of the success that other RTS's had. Probably comes down to the marketting & distributing co.
The one thing I hated about this game is how my planes would run out and die. All my buddies loved this game. There were just a few AI moments that I never got over and made me not like this game. I don't even know where the CD is anymore.
I couldnt really get into it..... I dont know.... I was just a bit odd.....
been playin since it came out and wont quit for nuttin except unless TA2 is better :D cant wate till that comes out
TA actually had plenty of success during it's times. It got a few game of the year's, had a hell of an expansion pack, and gave Chris Taylor quite the reputation. It sure as hell blew Dark Reign away. :D
Starcraft was released quite a bit after TA, so they didn't really compete hardcore. Pretty easy to understand why cavedog is no more, however. The main man Taylor left, and Kingdoms was more than enough to slay, or at least shame, the mightiest of companies. |
Best strategy game of its time.
Having real, impacting, 3D terrain was unheard of at the time. I still have a copy (with both expansions), and love playing it as often as possible. I really miss the Boneyards - they had a great multiplayer system going where people would compete for planets. |
Man I really loved playing this! TA is definately the best RTS ever! Starcraft ain't got nothing on TA! Man nothing like having a thousand different units blasting each other in multiplayer! Krogoth rules!
one of the best
oh well .. i had the original game and the addon AND i lost both when i moved :(
the next TA that plays in a fantasy world was complete crap but the first one was simlpy GREAT .. good old times |
