Doom I
Doom II
Quake II
Day of the Tentacle

and FUTURE SHOCK and SKYNET if I can figure out how to make 'em run on new machines :(

Jack Ruby 02-03-2004 06:59 AM

XCOM UFO Defense is still the greatest PC game ever, and it's great to see several new games trying to capture its turn-based alien-shooting gooshiness.

sapiens 02-03-2004 07:22 AM

Dopewars! A text based drug dealing adventure!

Kagh't 02-03-2004 07:48 AM

someones probably said it, but the first ever lemmings, so much fun confined in such a small space!

Lucifer 02-03-2004 02:00 PM

Dune
Believe it or not! It still is one great game to me

Redjake 02-03-2004 02:24 PM

I still play some Unreal Tournament every now and then, and some Quake II.

02-03-2004 03:23 PM

I still play X-Com and TFTD.
Master of Magic and Master of Orion 3 also are still kicking around on my hard drive. So is Arcanum (although thats not that old yet) =P

Lokus 02-03-2004 03:49 PM

The only old games I play regularly are X-COM: UFO Defense and a bunch of emulated SNES and NES games.

Every once in a while I reinstall these goodies:
Lords of the Realm II
System Shock 2
Command and Conquer
Full Throttle
Fallout
Baldur's Gate
Quake 2

Man, just hearing Descent mentioned brings back memories. I used to love that game, God bless the bucket o' sunshine!

P.S. Hello Krycheck :D

Crack 02-03-2004 05:11 PM

Starcraft! come on people... it's a classic right?

healyk 02-03-2004 05:50 PM

And of course, Starcraft.

Confederate 02-04-2004 08:57 PM

I started playing streetrod 2 lately, plus all of the original leisure suit larry games

Tracer 02-07-2004 05:41 PM

Every now and then I pull out my Quest for Glory games (formly named Hero's Quest). Love 'em. A fan-based company called Tierra is supposedly remaking QG2 with VGA graphics.

I definately remember wasting a lot of time playing Ski Free (though I don't know where my 2001 windows games CD is to re-install it). All I remember is getting to the bottom of the slope and that damn dog tripping me. Micro Man was another cool one off that disk.

I really enjoyed Command & Conquer back in the day (with my then-awesome Pentium 100!!). I used to deathmatch my friends in that every night (caused quite a few fights too ;) ).

Baldur's Gate II (if that's considered old... it came out in like 2001 right?)

Anyhow, my computer is getting pretty ancient so I probably won't ever be playing "new" games on it. Therefore all my games are old! :D

-Tracer

fik 02-07-2004 05:46 PM

The original Command & Conquer and Red Alert. :)

Also C&C Tiberian Sun, I consider that an old game now.

maxhooters 02-07-2004 09:13 PM

SonicRL 02-08-2004 07:19 PM

Well..the oldest computer game I'm still playing is Starcraft: Brood War. Man does that game own ^_^

MaGlC_MaN 02-08-2004 11:14 PM

Starcraft (the best game ever).. my dad and my little brother recently whipped out the old sega genesis and have been playing the shit out of Sonic 2, thus i've had to play it a lot to get past some stuff for them.

Jerpitcher 02-08-2004 11:30 PM

Haha, I agree with Oregon Trail! That game kicked ass!

hosti|e 02-09-2004 03:45 PM

Doom
Quake
Jones in the fastlane, god that brings back some seatjumping memories :)

orangeaidcow 02-09-2004 05:32 PM

Don't worry- some of us feel it's trash on the PC platform also. I still get the feeling it's only popular because so many people have inadequate hardware to keep up with current games.

I used to love those games. I origingally played them on the C64 but now I havent got a computer that is slow enough to run them and I doubt I could find them if I did. I bought the newer release of Pool of Radiance to play but its not quite the same.
I also still play Railroad Tycoon and the Sims on my computer that I have now.

GraveTaker 02-19-2004 07:12 PM

i play battlezone 2 sometimes, and i've been trying so hard to find interstate '76 and '82. Can you please contact me Zerrform about that?

Infernal 02-19-2004 07:15 PM

Dont know if these are old but StarCraft, warcraft, and diablo.

I still starcraft play every once in a while.

gamerguy 02-19-2004 07:47 PM

I bring up good ol' Wolfenstien 3d a good bit. It seems to be a big time killer while my teacher is lecturing about something inane.

_the_wombat 02-19-2004 08:22 PM

Starcraft
Warcraft2
Close Combat/3
Civ 2

fameslee 12-14-2004 09:13 AM

Freespace 2! I was looking around on ebay just for fun, and I noticed that a few of of the collector's editions were selling for over $70!

Gabbyness 12-14-2004 02:09 PM

Colonization, HA! I thought I was the only person who played the crap out of that game for years after it became out-dated.

Coppertop 03-17-2005 05:43 PM

Recently played through Fallout & Fallout 2 (at work no less).

It's been awhile since I have played last but I always come back to Steel Panthers: World at War. Such an excellent game.

TexanAvenger 03-17-2005 05:55 PM

Well... I still putz around with Day of the Tentacle every once in a while, but it gets easier everytime. :D

Actually, most of the old games I play are Lucasarts. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle, etc. Those were, and still are, some awesome games.

Spicy McHaggis 03-21-2005 11:05 AM

I still play The Incredible Machine every once in a while.

Never gets old and doesn't need fancy graphics or sound

Fallen 03-21-2005 07:55 PM

Wheel of Time

WheelofTime

It's the first game I played on the PC. An extremely fun FPS game, that came out 1 month before Unreal Tournament did. So, I think that is the reason it never got too big. It has an inovative kinda gameplay to it (for it's time). Personally, I still think its the only of it's kind out there. I have been playing the game for 5 or 6 years, and I still find new ways to do things. Check it out. I know some true game fanatics will like it.

Zeraph 03-21-2005 09:26 PM

Morrowind..I still havnt completed the main storyline though im about to.

Drider_it 03-22-2005 03:22 PM

tank wars get a cpu clock prog for it heh

Bodyhammer86 03-25-2005 11:34 AM

Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri, I've had it for over five years now and I still enjoy playing it (as the Spartans).

Zeraph 03-25-2005 12:11 PM

I finally got around to beating the main quest for morrowind. A little anti climatic though.

Fritzmitz 03-25-2005 08:08 PM

scorced earth! now that's old school fun!

NegativeNine 03-25-2005 10:06 PM

I remember Scorched Earth! I gotta find my cd... erm.... floppy.

I still play Starcraft occasionally, but I always get beat.
CS, but its not old anymore. Damn Steam.

Latch 03-28-2005 05:04 AM

One Must Fall: 2097.. yeah!

Guys who want to play these old games: http://www.the-underdogs.com has a TON of abandonware/freeware/shareware (I think this is OK to post since it's not really commercial games). They also have reviews and stuff of commercial games with links to where you can buy them for cheap.

A great program to emulate dos is called dosbox: http://dosbox.sf.net . They even have a database of games and how well the games play in dosbox. Very cool.

Coppertop 03-28-2005 11:42 AM

Scorched Earth. Wow, haven't thought of that game in a loooong time. Time to dust off my floppy (if I can find it).

Janey 03-28-2005 11:46 AM

Rogue.

Oh, and King's Quest 3 (two 5 1/4 inch diskettes that had to be loaded on the hard drive of the 286 clone in my hubbie's office...)

Confederate 03-28-2005 01:31 PM

hmm lets see, out of "oldish" games, I still play...
Full Throttle
Dark Forces
Duke Nukem 3d
All the Leisure Suit Larry games
Where in ____ is Carmen Sandiego
Street Rod 2
Wolfenstein
Doom 1&2, though I play them with the GL mod
Quake 1&2
Oregon Trail

snowy 03-28-2005 02:06 PM

I tried playing Age of Empires again recently but discovered the game play was soooo much slower than even AoEII and AoM that I had to quit...it just took too long to get anything done.

I still enjoy playing AoEII from time to time, though.

RubenBaraja 03-29-2005 11:20 AM

On my ebay wanted list:

Full Throttle
Space Quest Collection
Police Quest Collection
Kings Quest Collection (notice the pattern?)

Going to crack on with Sam and Max and The Dig (Robert Patrick) soon...

Coppertop 03-29-2005 01:39 PM

Well it looks like some frineds and I are going to LAN through Serious Sam this weekend. Nothing like spending a Saturday with some friends twitch gaming powered by Mountain Dew and sugary snacks. Maybe we'll play through Serious Sam: The Second Encounter another weekend. Good times, good times...

As a side note, I see that Serious Sam 2 (not SS:TSE) is coming out soon. Sweet. Hopefully more developers will use these absolutely beautiful game engines.

RubenBaraja 04-03-2005 07:25 AM

Happy now - finally picked up Full Throttle.

All for the costly sum of £3 - probably about $5

777 04-03-2005 09:43 AM

Tetris

And there's an ice cream truck in my neighborhood that plays the Tetris theme :)

Hardknock 04-05-2005 02:18 AM

I always liked the Wing Commander series. But I lost the slowdown emulator needed to play them. And even then, it'd still crash now and then.

CyCo PL 04-06-2005 03:52 AM

Oldest pc game I actively play is probably Starcraft... I've got a few that I would play if I could run DOS games, like X-com terror from the deep, or duke3d, but I don't miss them too much with the newer games that are out now :P

Xcom bring back memories. I think there was a prequel that I used to play called UFO Enemy Unknown.

I have the latest UFO game called Aftermath (I think) which looks like it could be quite similar. Not got around to playing it yet

RogueHunter65 04-09-2005 02:32 PM

Starcraft....and I will probally play it untill they finally make a Starcarft II....which may never happen

d3cemberist 04-09-2005 03:48 PM

Starcraft
Doom
Quake III
Tetris.

-=shikamaru=- 04-13-2005 07:26 PM

FALLOUT and FALLOUT 2. Right now Im going through FALLOUT 2 with a massacre character: no quests, no BS trading or talking, just wiping out every city I come across.

Maybe I should seek professional help

DukeNukem4ever 04-14-2005 04:17 PM

Oldest PC Games I Still Have Installed/Play Every Now & Then.

Crusader: No Regret
Crusader: No Remorse
Descent -The original NOT the second one cause that really sucked!
HomeWorld
MechWarriors 1, 2, 3, & 4 with the add-ons
Return Fire
Tyrian 2.0
This Means War!
Maxis Sim-Tower
Speed Rage

&

LemPaint :hmm:

Although, I can't stop playing FreeLancer and Morrowind (GOTY Edition)... probably due to the fact that both have a BUTT LOAD of mods written for them.

AndTylerToo 04-15-2005 08:42 PM

Ahhh, I LOVE old games, because theres the fun factor that keeps bringing you back, with the added joy of all the good memories associated with them.
Every couple of months, I find myself playing through Fallout and Fallout 2 again. Easily my favorite RPGs ever. I can't wait for Fallout 3! Its being done by Bethesda Softworks, which is the same people who did Morrowind and that entire series, so I know that its in good hands... :) I also play some from when I was little, from time to time, from the Super Solvers series. Most notably Gizmos and Gadgets, so simple, but so much fun, Number Munchers and Operation Neptune. And just today I reinstalled Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Classic game that never gets old (to me atleast). If you like that series, then be aware that a Heroes 5 is in development. (yay!)
Another one is Gazillionaire, very fun trading game in space. Thats pretty much it.

Professional? Naw. I made it my personal quest with my solo PC to wipe out every living being in Amn. So far, so good.

biznatch 04-16-2005 09:55 AM

I have seen great old school games here.
But where is SimCity2000???? One of the greatest games ever.
Duke Nukem and all is ok. But sim city 2000 rocked, I still play it a lot.

snowy 04-16-2005 12:58 PM

Hehe, my friend picked up Oregon Trail at a garage sale this last weekend. I'm looking forward to installing it on my computer and giving it a go.

You can pick up the Apple IIe emulator and the Oregon Trail ROM at the above link. I played it a few months back and actually made it all the way to Oregon - something I never accomplished back in junor high. Good times, good times.

frankx 04-18-2005 05:50 PM

Wolf3D
Spear of Destiny
Doom 1 and 2
Mechwarrior - the original (NOT Mechwarrior 2)
Quake & Quake 2
BIG fps fan here!!

Bratwurst 04-19-2005 02:10 PM

I've been playing a bunch of Civ3 via email lately.

Bratwurst 04-19-2005 02:16 PM

Oh and I just bought UT2004 from GoGamer for $12 or something ridiculous like that. I haven't installed it yet though. Thats pretty old. I was playing the original UT a couple months ago with some other guys after hours at work. Ran well on our work machines. If you install the last patch for the orig UT it doesn't need the CD to run so we could get a decent LAN game going without using a cracked exe.

Not exactly cool to the developer of the game, but...

paulskinback 04-22-2005 05:00 AM

Prince of Persia from my old 286 VGA - from an era when a whole game fitted on a diskette

oh and arkanoid 2 - revenge of Doh

killeena 04-22-2005 06:40 AM

Scorched Earth
Sid Mier's Pirates! (Although the new one now)
Shadow Warrior

It is a bummer though, there are some games that have a hard time running on WinXP.

hulk 04-22-2005 07:52 AM

Shadow Warrior just hit open source, it's not all bad!

redlotuss9 04-22-2005 09:39 AM

I can't believe no one mentioned Wizardry. I think that game came out in 1980. One of, if not the first RPG's for the computer. I still play that occasionally. I also play a Doom clone called Heretic on occasion.

nukeu666 04-22-2005 11:05 AM

i started playing C&C gold few days ago
currently trying to find a comp with win98 to play older gmaes like betrayal at krondor
