Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I just bought the Xbox version of Oblivion, Goty Edition from Amazon,
and was wondering if y'all had any advice, hints or tips for me before it arrives and I get neck deep in it?

Set aside about 60 hours.

Haha^ Ya, oblivion is good.

Advice: do all the side quests. Be good before you're evil, that way you can experience the whole game with 1 character.

the names of people and locations were too hard to follow, i kept seeing proper nouns and thinking "i've seen this before, but where?" and it just made gameplay way too slow for me

Thanks for the help, guys.

I'm planning on playing this sucker until Skyrim comes out in November, so it'll see many hours of gameplay.

Is the morality system like those of Fallout 3 and Fable 2, where you could adjust it by doing good or bad deeds?

Also, would a little meta note-taking be a help with remembering pertinent information? Or is this stuff already on the web for the searching?

Once again, thanks for the help. :)

Zeraph 04-12-2011 09:18 AM

There's a lot of web stuff like walk-throughs and tutorials.

I never had any trouble keeping track of quests or names or anything though. Never needed to look anything up.

I forget for sure about the morality system. But yeah, generally I think that's how it works. The fastest way to become evil IIRC is to become an assassin/join their league.

the only thing i found frustrating about oblivion was the level scaling of opponents: When you're level 1, you'd fight against a level 1 rat; when you're level 20, you fight against a level 20 rat. It was infuriating.

So yah, be prepared for lots of repetitive fighting. But I'm still not sure what combat is better, the repeated hitting of oblivion, the "let me reload to get better dicerolls" D&D combat; the "never miss" button bashing system of DA2, or the lets use VATS to make combat a bit monotonous system of Fallout. They all have good elements, I suppose.

That sounds okay. I don't want it too easy.

Btw, Oblivion was awaiting me on my doorstep when I got home this afternoon.
Looks like the long hours are about to begin.

If y'all can think of anything else, I'd appreciate it.

Don't be afraid of creating a custom class with all the cool stuff you want to use as primary skills.

Try not to get turned into a vampire. :p

dude. read the hell out of Video Game Cheats, Reviews, FAQs, Message Boards, and More - GameFAQs info about leveling up. Oblivion is one of the best games of all time buy the leveling system is very daunting.

I did the entire game, 100% achievments with my own class and I NEVER slept until I had my stats maxed for the level.

Also, if you intend to do all possible things prepare for 250+ hours. I spent 280 hours and never touched the add-on.

Yeah, I just realized the scale of this thing when I noticed I spent an hour real-time tailing a woman on the orders of a paranoid schizophrenic. :D

Also, what's this about not sleeping so you don't level?
I'm still level 1 and have slept a couple of times to pass the time, until I figured out the "Wait" action. Am I doing it wrong?
------
I'm loving this game so far.
I was caught by surprise earlier by getting swamp fever from a mudcrab. It debuffed my strength and endurance and in the process encumbered me so I couldn't move. Luckily I had killed the crab with my last stroke. (I stilled haven't found a Cure Disease spell)
Anyway, my question is, is there any way to expand your carrying capacity?

Baraka_Guru 04-15-2011 04:02 AM

To level, you have to sleep on a cot or bed or something.

Ok, thanks, Baraka. And so, from what Z says, it's best to max the stats for the level you're on before you level up?
Or at least the ones you're specializing in?

You will see soon enough on your menus. The game will have your class skills at the top with progress meters. If you max them all out, you will avoid making your opponents more challenging without maxing your skill abilities first. The difference being level 1 vs. level 2 opponents at specific skill levels.

"Secondary skills" are listed below your class skills.

Fremen 04-15-2011 09:39 AM

Ok, I think I understand.
It's like sending a first-grader out to fight a second-grader, but the first-grader's been held back to learn more lessons and get more fighting experience. Is that any where close? :P

Baraka_Guru 04-15-2011 10:34 AM

Pretty much.

Except with swords.

And magic.

WhoaitsZ 04-15-2011 05:47 PM

sorry fremen, totally forgot about this thread.

like baraka said, when you sleep you level up. its been about three years since I played it but I remember just using the hell out of skills before leveling up. the more your practice the more skill points you get. Sorry I forget the details. check gamefaqs :)
