Tabletop gaming

back before electronics when a strategy game's graphics were the models that you assembled and put together. my recent addiction: Warhammer 40k. i play tau. i had no idea that there was a slew of other ones so i'm curious as to what yours are or what your opinions are on tabletop gaming.

Baraka_Guru 10-18-2010 03:28 PM

The Settlers of Catan is a work of art.

We play this at home quite a bit:

Carcassonne (board game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

My 6yo loves it - gets the tiles out and build cities solo.

snowy 10-18-2010 04:56 PM

This is a game we like to play around here: Dominion.

I want to get more tabletop games at some point, but they're kinda spendy.

inBOIL 10-18-2010 05:44 PM

+1 for Settlers of Catan. I'm also a fan of Ticket to Ride, Diplomacy, and Axis and Allies. Risk is fun too, but tends to be a bit too influenced by luck.

Baraka_Guru 10-18-2010 05:46 PM

I've always wanted to play Axis and Allies.

Rekna 10-18-2010 06:52 PM

Axis and Allies is fun but has some drawbacks. For one it takes like 30 minutes to set up. Then with lots of players the game is basically over after the first turn :( When you actually do get a good game going inevitably someone accidentally nukes the board by rolling the dice on it wiping out eastern Europe and ruining the game...

dice-nukes and curious cats are game killers.

I played Warhammer Fantasy for a while. I still have a tiny Slayer Dwarf army. I also play Hordes on occasion. I have a decent Legion of Everblight setup.

With tabletop strategy games, I tend to enjoy just collecting the models and painting them more than I enjoy playing. They get pricey, though, so I usually stop collecting when I get the few certain models I really like. The models then end up serving more use as D&D models...

I used to play MAgic The Gathering competitively, until I started a job in another city and lost my playgroup - I tried the local scene for a few months, but it just wasn't fun playing without my pals anymore.

I played M9 with a buddy of mine before he moved away. In a few hours, I'm going to a first of (it is hoped) many casual draft/casual play M11 tourneys with a few friends (one existing, two new).

I'm looking forward to it.

We picked up Carcassonne yesterday. It was really appealing to me because it can be played by 2 players. My husband and I played against each other this morning. It was a lot of fun. I can definitely see us playing it frequently.

Settlers of Catan is awesome, I haven't played any of the expansions for it though.

Me and the roommates play Axis and Allies and Magic the Gathering every once and a while.

When I was younger used to play the Star Wars CCG and the Lord of the Rings TCG both by Decipher.

Other games I've enjoyed playing over the years are Risk and Stratego.

Axis and Allies has so many different versions now. My one roommate has like all of them. I only own the Original, Revised Edition, and A&A Europe (the older one). They recently re-released A&A Pacific and Europe with some different rules and made the maps look more like the A&A Anniversary Edition. The Pacific and Europe games can be combined into one big game for the whole world. It's pretty crazy.

I love dungeons and dragons 3.5, Pathfinder, and 4e. Also Exalted (white wolf) is awesome sauce. I'm about to start a superhero RPG, can't wait for that. And another that is, well no one would know it, as it was made by a small group and only published for a short time but my friend was one of the playtesters. So yeah....I'm really into tabletop gaming, especially RPGs. I love roleplaying.

high_jinx 11-09-2010 10:34 AM

i had a lot of fun with this one and some of it's expansions back in jr. high school...

RoboRally is fantasticly fun and silly. I like to call it the game that proves that no one knows their left from their right 100% of the time. Sooner or later someone will say "Damn I meant to turn right... oh crap" as they realize just how bad shape they are in.

Arkham Horror is one of my favorite board games ever. It's very very cool for a co-op game with tons of replayability. Fantasy Flight actually ran a couple of league scenarios for a time, and they're worth checking out (though they do require the expansions) on their website.

Talisman (board game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My brother-in-law was telling us about Talisman last night. I want to look for it next time I'm at the game shop.

pan6467 11-23-2010 06:55 AM

As a young kid it was Life, Monopoly and chess. In the 80's and high school it was AD&D, Top Secret, James Bond and Star Trek. In the Navy it was Axis and Allies, Stratego and Risk. Actually one of my shipmates wanted to start his own gaming company so he would test his ideas on us. Some sucked some weren't bad, very fun to play in fact.

And then throughout the ages one game stayed constant, even to this day. Sher-co's simulated baseball game.

I've played it, and it was fun but be warned. It's a loooooong game.

I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up probably one of my favorite games of all time. Munchkin by Steve Jackson Games.

If you've ever played D&D you need to play Munchkin (and if you aren't a D&D fan you still should).

The basic premise of the game is you start as a Level 1 Human with no class (and boy do they milk the no class joke for all it's worth in the many variants). The goal is to make it to level 10. You do this by fighting monsters, and collecting treasure, and being as much of a Munchkin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munchki...-playing_games) ) as you possibly can be.
Cards from the original game:

Or some from Munchkin Cthulu (all the varients are stand alone games and some have their own expansions although they can be mixed together)

We lost many an hour to the good ol' Heroes Quest.

Zeraph 01-16-2011 11:47 AM

Munchkin is offensive to us gamers ;)

PS dang video games and especially WoW its taken so many from tabletop gaming :(
