Playstation Move.

Got mine, anyone else?

Tried the Eyepet demo, def for little kids, great for guests who come over and bring their kids no doubt.

Time Crisis demo, I felt like I was back in the arcade all over again, aiming a controller at the screen and blasting giant robots? hell yeah. haha, it'll be interesting to see how this integrates with MAG and other FPS titles. The only reason I've never been an FPS gamer on consoles was because of my preference to mouse/keyboard. But this felt responsive enough that I felt something like this would sway me to go back through some games I skipped if they go and patch in support for these controls.

It's really flipping accurate. Surprising enough, My favorite game so far is just the ping pong game that came with the sports bundle.

anyways, I've wasted the last 3 hours playing it out of the box without charging it and it's finally dead so... took a break to write my impressions down. :)

Didn't this company already invent this device (at the very least, the concept of motion gaming) years ago?

If I'm actually right about it, it might have been called EyeMotion.
Rhetorical ponderance aside, I believe the only difference between the two is that the first concept involved motion-capture graphics, via some sort of informational teleport optical camera attachment, whereas this newest iteration is predicably going after the Wii's enormously-satisfied market to those who enjoyed the innovation of a re-tooled/"simplified" gaming experience, i.e. "the Wiimote".
It's a shame they waited this long, and at the same time interval where Microsoft announced their Kinect feature for the X360. I don't get it.

So... how are you enjoying your investment, Shauk? Were there many (good) titles worth choosing from, or are you kinda heavily having fun with was pre-packaged with the platform? If you have any experience with the Nintendo's Wii, would you rate them, by comparison, one as more enjoyable than the other? based on what factors - handling, controls, game selection, enjoyability?

I'm still on the fence about getting one. It seems nice but I could really see it just being gimmicky *cough*Nintendo*cough* haha I'm just messin' Nintendo.

Jet, the original peripheral was called the EyeToy, and was just the camera, and yes, it was out years and years ago back on the PS2, and in a way I'd say that was probably the 1st foray (unsuccessfully) in to motion gaming. Nintendo may or may not have drawn on that as an idea for motion controllers.
I keep reading that Sony started research in to motion controllers before nintendo but nintendo brought it out 1st. Given the difference in precision, I'm wondering if it was a QA process that kept Sony's Move on the backburner for as long as it was.

From a technical standpoint, I'll just quote Gamepro
Quote:

Thanks to its more ergonomic shape, the Move's controllers are more comfortable in your hand than the Wii-mote/nunchuck combo, and the PlayStation Eye, which acts as the sensor, is both more accurate in its tracking and easier to balance on top of your TV than the Wii's. Moreover, the Move's Z-axis tracking is not only superior to the Wii's (just the fact that it exists is enough for that), it allows more flexibility in your movements, allowing you to move closer to your TV in order to put more power into a bowling throw or to back up in order to absorb a powerful slam at ping pong. The camera also incorporates real, 3D body movement as well, leading to a more intuitive sense of realism.

Beyond the Wii comparison, though, the Move impresses from virtually every technical perspective: both the accelerometer (which tracks how fast you're swinging the controller) and the angular rate sensors (which track in which direction you're moving the controller) are, to quote My Cousin Vinny, dead-on-balls accurate. Tracking is crisp with very low latency, and motion is represented as you'd expect in real life, meaning assimilating to new games is simple. The Move's controllers even include a magnetometer and complex inertial sensors to track its position by dead-reckoning, allowing the PlayStation to know how the controller is moving, even when it is obscured from the PlayStation Eye (for example, when you reach behind your back to grab an arrow from your virtual quiver)
To give you an idea, I was playing the gladiator game, and for shits and giggles I looped my fingers through the wrist strap and started swinging it in a figure 8 crisscross fashion in front of me and my avatar swung it at ease like he'd been doing it all his life.

It made me giddy thinking of the 1st star wars light saber simulation that uses this hardware.

Furthermore you can use this to navigate the XMB, I must say it should seem quite impressive to the causal viewer as I navigate my collection of movies and tv shows with the mere casual flick of my wrist.

Here's a dry run video I did of the Time Crisis demo, I didn't get myself in the shot (except a brief cameo), hopefully i'll figure out a better angle to shoot from in the future.

I've played a few wii titles on both convention floors and at with a few friends at their homes, but I always viewed it as too casual of a system for me since it did not posesses the accuracy and speed in the control that I wanted, nor the graphic capability I'd desire for an immersive experience.

Right now the launch selection is "ehhhhh?" The sports champions one that it's bundled with has enough milestones for you to aim for to keep you busy for a while. Eyepet is a total childs game but I still played through the demo with no qualms about doing so just because the experience was unique.

Some existing games are adding support (like Heavy Rain, MAG) while Sony is pressuring devs to integrate support in to upcoming titles. Also upcoming, Killzone 3, SOCOM, LittleBigPlanet2, TRON. They're very positive it will be adapted quickly since they said on average it's been taking the 3rd party devs an average of 2 weeks to build working Move compatible prototypes for existing games. It makes me hopeful for things like Bad Company 2 or Modern Warfare etc...

One nag, some games are designed to be played on the floor (EyePet) while most are designed to be played standing, so depending on the game, you may have a small amount of set up time, but I guess I'm used to it considering I have to dig out the drum set every time I want to use it for rock band or guitar hero, as a comparison. Just keep that usb wire to the camera untangled from any others and it wont take but a moment to move it around as needed.

edit: full list of titles I found.

I wasn't going to buy MAG before, but this might push me to give it a go.

so um.. you know how PS3 integrated with FB to post trophies? yeah well, these trophies let you take a picture of yourself to mark the occassion and superimpose certain elements on to your controller. I decided to have fun with it.

Time Crisis!!! SIGN ME UP!!!!!!!!

If they make a bunch of arcade shooters like this, you bet your ass I will get the Move!

Shauk 09-21-2010 08:40 PM

Yea, I'm excited to see how the final implementation in to FPS games will turn out. Right now the MAG beta has some issues.

I'm waiting for a review from a left handed person

Shauk 09-26-2010 02:26 AM

the controller is symmetrical, the games give you options to play left or right handed so it just flips the functions from left to right or vice versa. *shrug* seems like a non issue.

the Eyetoy for PS2. I bought one back the first year they were out. Did some hover-boarding etc. It was a lot of fun, but was using it on the basement TV and ended up smacking my head on the ceiling doing one of the jumps with the hover board. The kids thought it was hilarious. the dent is still in the drywall.

Now that I remember it, I will take it out and use it in the living room on our bigger flatscreen and 9 ft ceiling. Still using the PS2, as I see no return in purchasing a leading edge video gaming system while the kids are still in school.

boink 09-27-2010 07:23 AM

I hope its a non issue. I see the buttons are the usual ones for the right hand.
I hope software assignments are enough.
I had a front end mod for q3a that made your gun look left handed,
I was surprised at how much that little change improved my game.
A lot of little things can change your game from fun to frustration.
If your not left handed, you really don't know. I hope I can take it for a test drive in a store.
Looks like it's working well for a lot of people.

Honestly some of the kinect lineup is piquing my interest, and i'd love to see companies expand in to both the ps and xb platforms with more commercial interests in the platform.

Could you imagine for example, p90x in conjunction with the move or kinect? I know there is already some sort of fitness example on kinect but from the reviews, it's pretty crappy at detecting the things it's supposed to be detecting at times.

Could be good for lots of things in more intricate detail as the tech gets better, teaching things like sign language, martial arts, etc..

I understand these are gaming platforms 1st and foremost, but this tech is capable of a whole hell of a lot more.

If they ever come out with a move 2.0 they could definately upgrade the quality/functionality of the camera. A higher definition camera would be a great start. I guess the reason it runs in the resolution that it runs in now is due to the FPS target being as high as it is. I guess they can't really keep the price point down too much if they start using high end cameras with high frame rates though.

Time will tell. This stuff will look great in 10 years, and i'll be in my 40's *sigh* I had to end my post on a self depressing note :D
