If you got to design an rpg...
What would the setting and gist of the story be?
Mine would start on December 31, 1999 and deal with an alternate history (though recent, it is still history) in which the y2k bug occured and the doom sayers were correct. The story would involve ensuring the survival of a northern city (New York?) through the rest of the winter. Kindof boring now, but given a little work I could probably make something of it. |
If you've ever played rifts, that's the way I'd have the setting.. set across and open land where there technology (energy weapons, hover cars and huge ATVs and other groovey stuff), psionics, magic and pre-rifts stuff (rifles and old fuel trucks). Have the first game as the main book plues a few others and then have expansion packs as the extra books.
Now I start thinking about it.. that'd be HUGE! hehe... And just walk around and talk to people, hear about quests and complete them. :D |
BAMF, Palladium released a game that's loosely based on that premise, though the y2k bug was actually a race of "bugs". Check it out, I hate the Palladium system but the game is a lot of fun.

Sword and Sorcery is supposed to be releasing a d20 verison of Gamma World Sometime this year. My favorite game setting ever was Gamma World 3rd edition.

Think small
You are a microbe in a human body. You can perform benificial tasks (normal flora), fight other organisms within the body, or take on the body's defenses. Over time you can develop new ablities: resistance to antibiotics, a capsule, motility, new methods of attack or defense against other microbes. You could join others in a colony, escape the body to adventure in other bodies, maybe even mutate into a multicellular critter. |
Could we be evil and attack organs?

I've thought up many many many different RPGs since about the sixth grade, most of the systems based off of AD&D second edition, but with adapted rules to encompass the main theme (including Magic: The Gathering, where you play a mage fighting against other mages in various lands and dimensions; Pokemon, good lord, don't ask what I was thinking; Several different variations of Dragonball Z, again, I have no idea what was going on in my mind; one loosely based off of Mechwarrior; another based on Robotech; one sort of with the idea of Grand Theft Auto Three, set in the present, in a city, but it was so in depth that you could literally do anything you wanted to, I built a system for everything, as long as it made sense; The Matrix was filled with most excellent RPG material, although I also added a second side, when you're out of the Matrix; one called World Dom, where you play a general of any country you choose, manage funds and troops to fight against other players to dominate the Earth; and I'm probably forgetting a few).
I'm currently working on one called Battlestations, it's a mix of World Dom, and the one that was based on Grand Theft Auto, but with all of the technology (since it's no longer just limited to a bustling city) I've spent about two years just researching so far, and don't expect to be done anytime soon. It also involves space and time travel, so it's quite complicated... That reminds me, anyone who would like to help is very very welcome to. |
I think Fallout would make a badass MMORPG or pen and paper
|
if i could make my own rpg, I'd make it a fps (a la deus ex)
|
Good idea Bermuda, the FPS style of RPG is usually really fun. I'm waiting for more of those to come out. I guess it's sort of hard to make the battle system real time like that and allow an experience system at the same time. It can be done though (EQ is a good example).

MMOFPS by the good folks who brought us evercrack. God, I am so addicted to this game it is ridicululous. I'll logon for like 15 minutes at a time just to squeeze off a couple of rounds, maybe score a few Battle XP. D20 Modern is the perfect vehicle for this sort of combat and character development, I just don't have the time to put it all together. |
I would make a system a lot like Fallout. ALtho I would make it so that there were more races. I liked the idea of having mutants, I just think there should be more different places / people you can talk to. it would be nice as a MMORPG but I find a Single player game can have very nice rewards as well. Things dont always have to be Multiplayer to be fun.

I don't know about story or setting, but there would be materia, and everyone would not find out that they all lived together as children but forgot.
MY wicked cool idea for an RPG is one where you have several major cities mapped into the game. You use an easy level editor sort of program to design your character and apartment home (inside). Then you go out into the city, modern day New York for example, fighting some sort of monster or demon commonly found there, do "quests" of some sort, and then go home. But see, you can make your digital home look like your real home, digital self like real self, etc., and you could travel between actual cities, kinda like Microsofts flight sims, but on foot, or in a car... like GTA3, but you can enter nearly every building... whatever, just an idea |
or Raganarok Online, but free, and no lag... mmm...
|
The quasi-fallout ideas sound cool. Anyone hear anything about Fallout 3 (the RPG, not the console travesty).

lol thass so cool, with all these ideas..
you guys know that there' sa new "game" for PS2 coming out called RPG MAKER 2.. rite? heh, i was wondering what kinds of stories i could do.. heh.. i bet i could take pointers from here :-P (heh don't worry, imma not gonna sell these :-D heh) |
Last time I checked (a few months back), Fallout III was not in production. You can check black isle's message boards to see if there are any new developments, but mostly they say that Fallout games are not profitable enough... evidently, BI is in a bit of a money crunch at the moment.

Why ask a "what if" question about this?
