Star Wars: The Old Republic
|
Needless to say, I hope this game sucks so I don't get divorced.
|
Please allow me to reiterate what I've been saying since its announcement in October 2008:
Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait :D:D:D |

im in the same boat lol |
Fuck.
I just scorched my shorts! Seriously, that has to be the best cinematic trailer I've seen. Let's hope they have a game to match it. |
I would drop WoW for this atm. I hope things pick up for WoW.
|
That 4 minute trailer was better than the last 3 Star Wars movies combined. Count me in.
|
Wow. I haven't played an MMO in a looooooong while but I might have to give this a try.
|
Has anyone seen any good gameplay footage yet? The one thing that concerns me is that on the footage they showed a while ago (the "first-ever" preview) the character movement was all jerky. I was assuming it's because they didn't optimize things, or they were using a crappy machine or something. I'm hoping it looks much more fluid for real.
|
I haven't seen any new footage since Baraka. It seems like they're still working on classes. The latest bounty hunter blog got me all excited!
But I'm trying not to think about it too much, along with Guild Wars 2. Neither have release dates. And this is Bioware we're talking about, so we could have to wait another two years. :/ That and its their first MMO. |
I'm very excited, but also abit apprehensive about the supposed "microtransaction" pricing for the system instead of monthly subscription. Well, hell I don't like to pay any additional fees once I've bought the game. I'd rather pay more up front than getting it for free and being forced to pay per use..

Its not due out till septemberish so lets hope they should us something before then.
I will keep my eye open for game footage and will post it here. |

I was kinda hoping this would have been a movie ...
|
CGI trailers say about as much about the game as the box art did for Atarii 2600 games.

While this movie is really cool, I'd love to see how the game actually plays. |

SW:KotOR was a good game...excellent, even. But I'm not buying into an MMO that looks like that. I hope they're improving the animations. I want something that doesn't look like flip-book rag dolls flapping at each other. I want something immersive. |
Oh yeah. Heck, WoW came out almost 5 years ago and its animations are still good, so an MMO that comes out today should be waaay ahead of that. I died a little on the inside when they said they are making the game cartoony like WoW instead of realistic looking. But the animations are where it's at, you're right.
|
I'm fine with "cartoony." It's all about being aesthetically pleasing. I've seen cartoony more beautiful than attempts at realistic. Animation and style is key. We know WoW-like visuals work, because many are still okay with an engine that's going on, what, 5 years old? And we should also expect that WoW-like should look better than WoW considering the improvements in game engines and the growth of machine capabilities of the average user over the last half-decade.
I've downloaded a trial of LoTR Online because I'm a fan of the world, and plus I wanted to see what a more current MMO looks like. I've had some tech problems logging in, but I've had a taste. It looks really nice, but I need to see more. The only bit I've seen was at night amongst buildings. I hope to play it more on the weekend before my 10 days are up. Anyway, the graphics there aren't necessarily realistic either, but they look far nicer than WoW. |
There are 9 very very short clips on their character type pages showing certain moves, the animation looks clean, and far from jumpy.

For those who want the game's backstory, be sure to read the Dark Horse webcomic here:
Webcomic | Star Wars: The Old Republic |
Here is Game Trailer's parsed commentary on the cinematic trailer. There are some interesting tidbits in here. There are a few things you probably missed.
(Some may deem the material in this video as spoilers.) Star Wars: The Old Republic Video Game, GT Pop-Block: Jedi Vs Sith Cinematic | Game Trailers & Videos | GameTrailers.com |
it's a great CGI trailer but show nothing of actual game play.
|
As mentioned above, you can to to the website for that.
|
a lot of hype, but no lunchmeat in this sandwich yet.
put your shorts back on, god damn, there isn't even anything to get excited about yet, you know 20 of every 23 star wars games suck anyways right? ;p |

honestly, know why I'm excited for this? Because its NOT about vader's era. I can't stand that era of star wars anymore. its thoroughly exhausted. Which is why KotOR was so exciting and fresh. new characters, new reason for interest. While I wish they had finished the storyline for KotOR, TOR should be agreat new change, with a cool new storyline. whoot. :D So even if the game isn't innovative and jaw dropping, the story will be kickass. for me at least. *points to self* this nerdy lady likes her stories. :D |
KOTOR had a better story than the SW prequels. Heck the story was as good as the original 3.
|
I am excited because this is Bioware. And they have not made a bad game yet.
Anyone have links to gameplay footage besides the little class snippets on the main website? |

The Old Republic Gameplay Footage by xxHIMxx |
embedded for ya :) It's really early alpha footage and probably going to be removed pretty quick because Bioware probably doesn't consider it representative of the end product. It's true though, Graphics and gameplay change so much during this point in development. I'm surprised it looks as good as it does. |
Thanks, cybermike.
At this point, I'm only concerned about MMO-related gameplay aspects, immersion, and just how big, varied, and in-depth the world will be. When I log in, I want to feel like I'm entering a galaxy far, far away. |
So, we should expect the following breakdown on the "Dark Side:"
95% Sith 5% Bounty Hunter Wait, there are other classes? So damn cynical, sorry! |
I'd want to be a Jedi, I think.
But with 5 classes yet to be revealed, who knows? Quote:
|
This does look interesting, but my gameplay habits are not compatible with MMORPGs. I can't justify paying a monthly subscription for a game, because I know that I will lose interest within a limited timeframe.
I would've preferred a new addition to the KotOR franchise. Or even a completed KotOR 2. |

I've been waiting for their release for a loooong time. And I believe they think they'll be done by the end of the summer at least. :) Here's their latest video release...promo if you will... |
You can probably gauge how the quality SWTOR will have by looking at the soon-to-be-released Dragon Age Origins. I don't think Bioware will disappoint even if it is their first MMO. I hope they can break away from the generic nature of existing MMOs.
What do you think the odds are that there will be an invite-only RP realm? |

On a side note: One of my professors did some work at Skywalker Ranch!!! How awesome is that?!?!?!?!? |
If you haven't checked it out yet, have a look at the newly released Developer Walkthrough:
I'm really getting sold on this. This is starting to look like the real deal. |
That video was great. That Sith warrior looks badass.
"Death from Above" was pretty sweet too ;) |
Am I the only one a little disappointed with the gameplay trailer? All the models looked very similar (like nearly the same face and hair for all the males). And the animations in KOTOR seemed better than this...but maybe I'm just not remembering right. I still plan to give it a chance but I was hoping for better lightsaber and death animations in particular. It looks like the standard MMO where you swing into thin air and there's very little of the parry and riposte; a feeling of back and forth fighting.
|
They did have the disclaimer that it's still a work in progress. I'm not worried about the models looking similar; I'm sure there will be variety at release. (At least, I hope so.)
As for animations, I found they were actually a bit better than KOTOR, though I might not be remember right as well. I found KOTOR a bit jerky and rigid more so than what we see here. As far as parrying is concerned...wasn't there some in the Jedi vs. Sith fight? Also, it was just a demo. Maybe the Jedis in the video kinda sucked. |
In the developer walkthrough, they said all the dialogue would be like that. They could mean something different, but do they mean to say that every conversation will have voice-over or computer-generated voice?
|
Tcp,
That's what they made it seem like. And the addition of group-based all-dialogue encounters. That will be cool when you're running with your buds, but in a PUG, I don't really want some chode to have any effect on my character's progression. Or is that being too harsh? |
I would love to play this game. I'm a huge star wars fan, but I don't like online games. I have a 360 and refuse to pay for xbox live.
|
I wish it wasnt MMORPG :(
