Your all time favorite weapon/ability?
(from a game)
I was just playing bioshock for the first time and the wasp plasmid (kind of like a magic spell) inspired me to start this thread. I was like holy shit! When I first got it. When you switch/make ready the ability your hand turns into this red mass of porous holes that wasps are crawling in and out of :) Then when you use it they fly toward your enemies and swarm them, all the while your enemies are screaming "No! Not bees! Ahhh!" kind of stuff. My second favorite would be a tie between force lighting and force choke from the star wars games. Those are self-explanatory in their funness :) My earliest OMG badass moment with a weapon in a game was Doom's BFG2000 or whatever its called. I remember destroying a room full of demons and smiling. |
My most recent best weapon was the Mulcher in Gears of War 2.
That thing will cut through beasties like a hot knife through buttah, that is, if you finally get to the action while carrying it. ;) My all time most favorite though? I have no clue. |
I would have to say that Execute from the warriors in WoW may be one of my all time favorites.
|
The Injector from Time Splitters: Future Perfect. Not the most powerful weapon in the game, but I just find something utterly fascinating about a gun that fires hypodermic needles. And the fact that the victim inflates and explodes just puts icing on the cake.

I'm usually pretty happy with a missle launcher or RPG. I also enjoy tossing grenades around corners or into windows. Did it yesterday in Fallout 3 and enjoyed hearing Raiders scream, then the explosion, then silence...
BFG type guns are alot of fun, but explosives give me the happy. :) |
I honestly don't think I can choose an all time favorite. The Ratchet and Clank series has a ton of cool weapons and abilities alone, lol.
Here are some weapons/abilities from various games that I like though: Polymorph (Warcraft/WoW) - Turning people into sheep, penguins etc is awesome. Insect Swarm (BioShock) - Being able to shoot live bees from the palm of your hand? Sweet! Hammer of Dawn (Gears of War) - Handheld ion cannon, I'll take it. Houdini Splicer (BioShock) - I know this isn't really a weapon/ability but the ability these enemies have is too cool. They've actually spliced themselves so much that they're able to dematerialize and reappear somewhere else, like teleporting. OctoCamo (MGS4) - Basically a chameleon suit made for espionage. The Penetrator (F.E.A.R.) - Seriously. Being able to shoot someone and literally NAIL them to the wall with whatever body part you happened to shoot was fucking excellent. That gun owned so hard, lol. That's all I can think of atm, I'll add more as they come. |
Tidus' Brotherhood Sword (The one that is on the cover) from FFX
The Ocarina of Time (that counts as an ability, yes?) The Assault Riffle in GTA IV |
Cerebral Bore in Turok on the N64. Lots of fun playing with friends, and the sound of that drill going WEEeeeerrrrerruuurrrr as it drilled into your head and killed you was priceless.
Hammer of Dawn in original Gears of War.. so great exploding giant spiders with laser beams from the frickin' sky.. man. Hidden Blade in Assassin's Creed - so great to do a flying leap across the roofs and impale the guy on a blade that just shot out of your freaking arm -- where your severed finger no longer is.. CREEPING DARK in The Darkness - so awesome to make one of your darkness worm things slide along surfaces like a snake and then eat some guy's face.. Turrets in Team Fortress -- I loved building it and then running back and forth banging it with my wrench to upgrade it - just so I could it waste some unsuspecting scout flying around the corner.. |
I have to go with the rail gun in Quake 3. Playing multiplayer with that gun was awesome. There were a few levels that have pretty big jumps where the jumper is pretty much a helpless target while jumping. I loved sniping people when they were jumping.
|
i usually love anything to do with a sniper rifle... there's something really rewarding about popping off a headshot and the other guy not even knowing where it came from. i also really always loved the gnomish shrink ray from wow, simply because of how often it misfires, resulting in backfire or enlarging you or your party or your enemy.
edit: oh yea!!!! there was a missile from twisted metal car combat that you'd fire off, and you WERE the missile with a missile cam. that was awesome. |
Cerebral bore! Dude, yes! Forgot about that one.
|
Yes, I have to agree with the comment from high_jinx about the satisfaction you feel from sniping and getting a headshot.
Also, I get great satisfaction in using the Lightning Shrink and the Blue-Winged Shell that homes in on the leader in Mario Kart Double-Dash. |
I always enjoyed putting DOOM in god mode and chewing up those pink bison things with the chainsaw. The BFG comes to my mind quickly, but the 'hand of god' or whatever it is called in the Rise of the Triad is fun too.
|
Mine would have to be the Laptop gun from Perfect Dark for the N64.
Upon inspection, it looks like a subpar laptop, but flip the right switch and it becomes a submachine gun! Not only that, but it can be deployed as a sentry gun too!!! |
Kirby's rock bit in Smash Bros. I destroy people with that ability!
|
I'm just gonna have to go with "the force" in general. Nutn like playing a game like Jedi Knight 2 where you can leap 50 feet while throwing your light saber across the room at multiple enemies then force push/pulling someone off the ledge you're about to land on.

LOL! Nice work brother. |
The Yak 9k fighter from Il2 Sturmovik. Nothing like a fighter with a frikking 45mm anti-tank cannon in the nose. That thing would evaporate planes and bombers in one hit and the recoil would stall you if you fired too rapidly.
|
I think I spend too much time playing World of Warcraft; all the abilities that instantly came to mind are those of my warlock. I LOVE popping into demon form and taking on packs of mobs with some help from my felguard. I also really enjoy hitting shadowburn when I time it right--it's instadeath.

Basically any move from Splinter Cell.. it is fun creeping around!
|
I thought that chainsaw gun thingy from Dead Space was pretty bad ass.
I also enjoyed the good ol' double barrel shotgun from the old DOOM games. |
Favorite? Protoss cannons, from Starcraft. I love me some cannons. There's nothing in the world as funny as a cannon rush.
|
I think it was the big Scythe the Necromancer had in Hexen II. That was the first time I ever thought "I don't care if it sucks. I'm playing that guy so I have one of those."
|
super sheep from Worms 2

The kineticore from Civ 2 test of time's scifi game. Insane range and strong enough to defeat just about anything in it's age or earlier. For a while, it made ground forces all but obsolete. |
Mario's long jump in SM64. That thing was broken.
|
I'm not a gamer, I'm just reading this thread vicariously, but I'm kind of surprised that the Portal Gun hasn't been mentioned yet.

Mind control; with that, you really don't need any other power/weapon as you can get/do anything you want.

Skiing in Tribes. There were 3 classes of armor, heavies were designed to be powerful, notably with a weapon called the mortar that would kill any lights within 20 feet of the explosion, but so slow they needed other players' assistance to move. But due to a bug (or feature, as it were) in the game physics known as skiing, they could singlehandedly fly across the map as fast as the lights could before. I've still never found a rush in any game that compared to capping the flag as a light or destroying the other team's base as a heavy in seconds.
Surprisingly, even with skiing the game was still very well-balanced because a) lights could move even faster, from one base to the other in under 15 seconds in some cases (would take 1-2 minutes without skiing), so fast even the mortars couldn't touch them unless aimed and timed perfectly and b) techniques evolved such as heavy defense and blocking that allowed defenders to oppose the incoming HO. (you could stop a heavy in their tracks by running into them or shooting them in mid-air) It was a critical part of the game because if your HO could overwhelm the other team's defense you would effectively stop them from doing anything other than trying to take back their base. |

the ultra-beam from supermetroid
the ability to possess an enemy and turn them on each other (from a psychic gc game, i forget the name of) the electrongun in killzone2 time control(fable2/braid/princeofpersia) hacking turrets, always a plus |

Terran nuke in Starcraft. Half of the enemy's base gone with 2 nukes. Even more fun when it's used on Zergs.

I actually faintly miss being on the receiving end of those. My heart racing as I hear the oddly comforting drone voice inform me a nuclear missile is being launched. Searching for that red dot in a panic. Rounding up my anti-stealth units. Wondering if they'll get their in time. Or breathing a sigh of relief as I realize it's my ally. |
Rubiss Sword - Dragon Warrior 3 Unleash the Lightning on everything
Golden Dragon - Breath of Fire Mostly how it looked Sticking Mines to enemies in Perfect Dark or Throwing the Grenade using its second ability Shooting Ice Arrows in Majoras Mask |
