Doom 3 beta (or alpha, or whatever)
I have a friend who found a playable level of Doom 3 that is apparently a leaked alpha test version. I'm curious if anyone here has played it or (if I'm not overstepping the forum rules) knows where to get it. I'd love to try it for myself. I used to dispise alpha tests because I thought they ruined the final product by peeking at the development, but I've come to find it interesting seeing the technology tests and their way of thinking.

I downloaded it but couldn't get it to work.. Dunno why, maybe my PC's not fast enough.
|
You can get it off of kazaa fairly easily.....just be aware of the actual file names and sizes of the things that show up in the search, otherwise you may get stuck with a fake one.
Keep in mind though that the alpha isn't really a playable version of the game, just several maps of an unfinished engine. It does give you a general idea of what to expect as far as enemies and shadows and such, but I think it would probably be better to just wait for the actual release. |
I downloaded it when it came out (2 months ago about?). It was very buggy but the graphics were simply amazing. What they can do with shadows is to enhance the atmosphere of the game is very cool.
Honestly tho, it aint worth downloading. It will ruin your amazement when the full meal deal comes out. Between this and Half-Life 2, FPS lovers are gonna have a good year. |
I desperately need a new PC so I can play these games when they come out :(
|
I messed with it, ran ok on my machine I got a GeForce 3. It is a cool tech demo, but not much actual game play in it
|
Downloaded it a while back, never worked... /shrug
|
It ran somewhat semi-decent on my machine if i disabled lighting.
With lighting however, i recieve a staggering 6 fp/s |
sorry, i didn't know you couldn't post stuff about P2P clients to download warez. wont do it again
|
you can talk about how buggy it is, how you should wait for release (it was 7 months ago btw), but no saying HOW to get it.
|
I had easy access to it and refused to download it. I don't even want to know how it'd run on my gf3.

IMO you can get as much out of the screen shots as "playing" the alpha. Because the game will NOT run that slow in it's final form you can see how hte game looks without wasting hours of your time. |
I was playing this and the graphics are simply amazing. The shadowing and textures are brilliant and the enemies are more realistic than alot of other games. Definaltley a purchasable game.

If you're looking for it, the .rar I've got here is 372 MB. Uncompressed it's well over a gigabyte, if I remember correctly. It all looks great but really is just a tech demo, don't expect any real clues about the final game or smooth play unless you've got a very fast CPU and video card.
There is a pretty cool feature to play around with - the ability to export a demo into a series of .tga screenshots, which in turn can be used to make .avi files. I've got a few very nice high-res 30fps videos of Doom III here =) |
My friend had one. He couldn't run it he equated it to looking at pretty pictures..
|
Yeah... it is pretty freaking sweet... and scary... the menu doesn't work.. you have to enter the console and open the maps manually there... but the game is gorgeous and intense... can't wait!
|
I've had it and been loving it since something like October of last year, you need one hell of a system to get it running even halfway decent.
If you wanna see the engine with a bit more progression, run 3D Mark 03 and check out the Battle of Proxycon. |
is there a webpage or do you have to get it off a p2p thing?
