Wii games: the best and the worst
It's time the Wii had its very own thread. A place where Wii enthusiasts can share our experiences and opinions on new games so when we're looking for a game, we can check out reviews from people we know.
I'll start, but give credit to other TFPers for their recommendations of two of the following: Super Mario Galaxy. Beautiful game, great music. I'm not a supergamer as many of you are, so it took me a while to catch onto the nuances of the game that Mario users would understand. It's like a puzzle, but you can only accomplish the goals in very specific ways. Not my favorite, but still fun. I'm scoring this one high because my teens love it and it is a pretty game. 9/10. Zack & Wiki. This one is more my speed. Some of the puzzles are simple, others are taking me quite a few tries to pass the levels. Graphics are not as snazzy as those in Galaxy, but the Wii functionality is more fun. The music and character vocals are silly but as far as game play goes, I'd have to rate it an 8/10. Dance Dance Revolution. The music selection is not bad. Some of the dance steps are very complicated. I haven't yet progressed to hand movements, but am finding that I really enjoy and can follow the workout levels. I always work up a good sweat! Lots of fun and the chance to gain coordination? 7/10. So far. That's all I've got so far. Please share yours! |
yeah galaxy is a blast.
it plays like mario64, just better. and it looks great. the sounds great too. actually, nearly everything is great. my personal favorite game right now. i'm a but surprised that you dont have smash bros brawl in your list - so i guess you're (like me) from europe!? or you just dont like fighting games. so i'm really waiting for brawl to come out here. anyway, i'd also recommend metroid prime 3. great atmosphere and the wiimote-controls work flawlessly. visuals arent too good - basically, it looks like prime1, just a bit shinier and more blur-effects here and there. too bad they didnt really upgrade more. regarding the controls: thats how the controls in red steel should have been (which is also a great game anyway, imo). i hope they'll consider this in redsteel 2. also, guitar hero 3 rocks. but i'd buy it for pc, just because its cheaper on pc. |
I've read of the Smash Brothers lately, msa, but have no clue what it is. I've never been a gamer and not so sure if I am or will be. :p So it's appreciated when you can explain some of this stuff to the total layperson. :)
The Metroid sounds interesting and do let us know what you think of the Brawl game if you try it. I have nothing against fighting (as a matter of fact, I do enjoy boxing with the sports package that was included with my Wii purchase) as long as it doesn't get gory. I am sorta squeamish. |
i will let you know about it, but the game will come out in the end of may here in europe... :( anyway:
smash bros brawl is the third game in the series. (smash bros64 on the n64, smash bros melee on the gamecube and now smash bros brawl on the wii) its a non-gory 4-player-fighting game. the characters are nintendo-characters (as a first in the series, brawl also features 2 non-nintendo-characters) like mario, kirby, link, zelda etc., the stages are funny and colorful, and you just bash on each other until someone falls down the level (every stage is designed so you can fall down on each sides, or be shot up to the sky) half of the fun of the game lies in the feature of items, which make the battles kinda random. you can pick up hammers, poke-balls and other random stuff and beat the crap out of your opponents. its nothing like street fighter, guilty gear or mortal kombat, which are classic 1 on 1-fighting-games. its just like a party-version of fighting-games. max out your fun by playing with 3 friends :D check out this video for a quick impression: |
Wii Lego Star Wars
Best game I have ever played. My wife loves it (and she's not into gaming much), and my daughter (8 last week) thinks it's great, because no matter how bad you are you never die - you just get smashed and reassembled. Plus the cut scenes are hillarious. |
yeah lego star wars is really nice.
and there is tons to do. i finished lego star wars 2 with my brother on pc, and when we finished all the episodes, we didnt even had 50% done of the game. there is really a lot to do. |
Lego Star Wars? Sounds like a strange concept but if your 8 y/o can handle it, maybe it'd work for me. :p
|
Lego Star Wars is fun, indeed. (I've only tried it, but I should get it.)

You are an agent of the Dark Side. I think Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros. are by far the best games on Wii, but there are a handful of notable titles.
Zelda: Twilight Princess Wario Ware Resident Evil 4 (the best version of RE4 is on Wii) Trauma Center Zack and Wiki Metroid Prime 3 yep... honestly not a ton of great Wii games, but enough to keep you occupied until the next good first party release comes out. Not sure what nintendo's planning now that Smash Bros is out... I guess maybe Wii Fit is their next big thing, but I don't think it's going to be NEARLY as big in the US as it is in Japan... I just don't think americans will be as receptive to "leaning side to side" and the "stepping on and off" dancing game. I guess I just hate innovation, or love having fun. |
Mario Kart Wii is the next first party game. Wii Fit looks neat but meh.
|
Keep an eye out for No More Heroes. It's pretty highly anticipated, and I think I'll buy it after I get my other priority purchases out of the way (Brawl, SM Galaxy).
|
We just picked up Super Smash Bros. Brawl and had a pretty good time. But I think only two of the four players actually liked fighting games. I have to figure out the controls. It's been a while since I've played fighters, but it looks promising; I shall have to try out the online multiplayer.
The four of us also had an awesome first round in Mario Party 8. It's a fun game if you want some good, easy competition in simultaneous multiplayer gaming. biznatch, I'm anticipating No More Heroes myself. I had it in my hand today, but I think I want Zelda: Twilight Princess and Fire Emblem first. They're more my style. |
My favorite so far is Metriod Prime 3 - the game just sucks me in every time I play it. The funny thing is, I've never really liked first person shooters before.
The other great game (that I've played) is SM Galaxy - I've collected something like 80 stars, and I can't imagine how long it's going to take me to get them all. |
Another vote for Smash Brothers. Great party game. I've only been able to connect to an online game once, and the lag was terrible (we're talking 1 frame per 20 seconds). Not sure if it was me or him, but I'm hoping it was a fluke and I'm able to play online eventually. The friend code system is kind of annoying, though (and random play doesn't seem to work for me, can never find anyone).
Other notable favorites of mine were: Super Mario Galaxy Super Paper Mario Fire Emblem (even though many said it was really hard, it just appealed to me for some reason) |
I love Super Mario Galaxy, even though I'm stuck on the last level right now. Stupid lava. Twilight Princess was the best in the series since Ocarina of time. Overall though I think Super Paper Mario was the best wii game I've played through. The whole 2d/3d thing really dragged me and despite it's somewhat childish appearance I still found the game pretty challenging at some points.
Now here's where I stray from everyone else: I didn't really like Super Smash Brother Brawl. And considering that its the fastest selling nintendo game, that's saying something. I still cant' shake the feeling that it's something like the Madden series though, the same basic formula, just update the roster and add in a few new players and throw in a few new features and you still have a best seller. It was innovative on the N64, now I'm just tired of flying of around with kirby and bricking people. That said, if you haven't ever played a version before you will love the game. One last thought, has anyone here played Resident Evil 4 for the wii? I read some pretty good reviews, but I'd like to get some more input on it before I throw down 40 bucks. |
I am loving Super Smash Bros. Brawl! My SO and I have been exploring the co-op modes together, intermixed with a fair bit of straight up brawling. I've been playing around with some of the new characters, versus using my old stand-bys from past Super Smash Bros.
I'm thinking about keeping it. It's my favorite so far. |
Smash Bros. is definitely the best game on Wii so far, if you have friends to play it with. The single player aspect of the game is pretty weak. I spend 95% of my time in smash bros playing online with friends, and it's great. Little to no lag at all, it's almost like being in the same room with them, minus the yelling of swears and epithets.

after being a sceptic on the merits of yet another "mario" game, the Super mario Galaxy has finally won me over. I still prefer the my recent acquisition (Zelda) over mario. Actually, I'm thoroughly adicted to Zelda on the Wii to the point where my kids enjoy giving me grief about how long I play.
Takes me back to my King's Quest playing days. I wish KQ was this rich in detail! |
i really liked brawl and zelda twilight princess on my own free time. also super mario galaxy is very fun too to get that old nostalgia feeling.
But there i also like the wii sports that came with my system. And it is really fun if you have older people over because it does not take a very long time to get to know how to play the game and everyone can get to play. also wii play is fun too. |
I played No More Heroes and I thought it was absolutely terrible.
The graphics were "retro" on purpose, I presume, but it made the game look terribly cartoony and unprofessional. The "motorcycle" scenes outside were worthless, boring, and I've played 1990 arcade games with better graphics. The plot was borderline insulting, and although I know they were trying to play off the anime-geek, star wars-loving "culture", it was stupid humor at best. |
