Rock Band - Anyone else disappointed?

I purchased Rock Band for my xbox360 a few days ago. There are so many things that have me already wanting to return it.

The guitar sucks compared to the guitar hero guitars. With guitar hero, the buttons stick up a little and are pretty easy to remember exactly where your fingers are during play. This guitar, all the buttons are inline with the guitar neck, and it is very easy for your fingers to slip farther down and lose track of where your hand is.

My left hand also starts tiring out quickly on this guitar. Usually after about half of a somewhat hard song. This never happened with guitar her.

The strum bar is very tight and spongey. It's not comfortable at all picking on this guitar.

The drums are fun, but they are extremely loud. When playing the guitar while someone else is playing drums, it's easy to get off beat because you hear the drums more than the volume on the tv, unless the tv is extremely loud. I hear there are mods that can be done, but I'd rather have had it come out of the box without being anywhere near this loud.

The mic, while I wasn't around to witness the awefulness of my friends singing, they said there were sync issues and volume issues.

The song selection is not terrible. There are 45 regular songs and 15 no-name band songs. About half of the songs are decent, the other half are just plan aweful.

I've already beat all the songs in hard and expert modes, and have gone pretty far with a band so far.

Does anyone else feel the same? From all the reviews I've seen, most people are happy with the set. I just want to make sure I'm not the only one who thinks it's the worst of the series.

didn't play it. won't play it. guitar hero stops here for me. unless someone gives me their drum set, i don't think i'd ever pay more than 20$ for it so it's 1 game that will have to wait. Plus, it's not really something i'd want to do. Guitar and drums are cool, vocal and bass are just bleh.

Anexkahn 12-30-2007 10:51 PM

i agree the guitar is a complete piece of trash. luckily i have the xbox version so i can use guitar hero controllers... if i had the ps3 version it would have already gone back.

the drums are kinda cool, but didn't hold my interest very long. I haven't tried it with a band yet, which probably would make it better, but overall i'm not impressed with it, and its back to gh3 for me.

inyoeye 12-31-2007 12:19 AM

the guitar is just the developers trying to take a step away from gh. they could've easily used gh controllers but instead they decided to make their own.
also the comfortability depends on the person, people who played gh first say that rock band controllers suck while people who bought rock band believe the controllers are just fine.

drums are suppose to be loud (if a neighbor is playing in a band next door, you'll probably be hearing their drums)

the only complaint i have is the microphone, when i go higher it goes lower eand vice versa (otherwise i jsut suck)

intecel 12-31-2007 12:45 PM

My main problem with the drum volume is that I have a roommate who usually works overnight doing stage setups for bands, and a girlfriend who sleeps midnight to 9am... There's such a small window for me to actually get to play the drums because of how loud they hit. I may try the gum rubber idea, and pick up a gh guitar for xbox360 before I return to see if it is any better.

genuinegirly 12-31-2007 12:53 PM

I like the game. It's good at parties.

There are no problems with the mic that I used. It picked up everything and judged me fairly. Though, I found that you have to hit it just right for the tambourine part.

You can use a guitar hero guitar with it, so why would you ever buy their crappy guitar, anyway?

i saw a video of someone playing a song on expert on youtube. the person claimed to have the highest score on score hero, but truth be told, the song didn't really look all that hard.

drum mania at its highest difficulty appears much more difficult than rock band.

A buddy brought it over to our New Years party tonight. It was fun! I'm not without complaints, but it was a good party game.

What was telling was... After a while we traded it out for Karaoke Revolution 2 for PS2 and had LITERALLY the whole party in the game room screaming along with "I Got You Babe" and "R-E-S-P-E-C-T". Versus having four people and a couple watchers for the whole time playing Rock Band. It's fun (and I'm a godly drummer), but it's not as good a party game as plain old karaoke.

guthmund 01-02-2008 10:34 AM

I like this game a lot, but there are definitely some problems.

For the most part, I totally agree. The guitar is largely crap, the drums are fun, but ridiculously loud and the original song list should've been loads better.

However....

The guitar can be sent back free of charge for replacement. I'm told that the replacement guitars don't have the strum register problems of those in the bundle. I'm sending mine back this week, so we'll see.

The mic stuff is easily solved. Volume control is on the controller you have use to navigate as a "singer." They don't tell you that in the game, but I found it in the book. You can adjust your volume, the volume of the singer on the track and the sensitivity of the mic. As for sync issues, even though I've not seen it myself, I assume there's a calibration option for the mic as there's one for both the drums and the guitar.

I wasn't disappointed at all. I thought it was quite magical.

And I liked the new guitars. I hated how loud clickety-clickety-click-click-clicliclicliclick was when you played any song on expert with the GH3 controllers. Ahh, silence.

And yea, the drums are kinda loud, but how do you muffle something that someone is SMACKING repeatedly?

Plus, you don't have to beat the crap out of them. They register a tap just as well as a bang. Real drummers don't beat their drums with all their strength... why should you beat the hell out of a game controller?

On high enough levels, the drums FEEL like playing drums. It's very nice. The "drum fill" feature is AWESOME.

The biggest disappointment, though, is the number and selection of tunes. I zoned out from contemporary rock about five or ten years ago. As a result, I know maybe six or eight songs on this game. It was that way with everybody at our New Years party. We must have done "Creep" thirty times. Makes it tough.

I will say, though, "Foreplay/Long Time" is a fucking BRILLIANT addition.

jvwgtr 01-03-2008 12:53 PM

I agree, the drums are super-loud!
But, there's a cheap and easy way to silence them:

There's a video for you to hear the difference:

I got it for the PS3 a bit ago and loving it since. For Rock Band and Guitar Hero, they were games to bust out when friends were over and all of my friends and I have been enjoying Rock Band a lot more than Guitar Hero 3.

I like how the guitar doesn't click anymore when you strum, though I have a couple friends that dislike that it doesn't click anymore - to each their own.

Using the drums though I agree with everyone else, it is a pain in how loud they are at times.

The only real disappointment with Rock Band so far is the DLC, which might sound strange since they are putting it out every week pretty much. The only stuff to interest me so far has been Black Sabbath pack and the Rush single. Everything else I had little desire to play.

pixelbend 01-04-2008 02:25 PM

I'm loving it! My guitar feels solid and the drums a kinda loud, but not overly so. I am thinking of doing the mod.

Look for Weasel Sausage at a small venue near you!

yellowmac 01-10-2008 09:53 AM

Sigh. This game needs to come out for the Wii. Fast.

ironpham 01-16-2008 08:26 PM

I finally tried this for the first time a few days ago. I actually enjoyed the drums a lot. If I were to get this game, it would only be for the drum part (so I'm probably never going to get it).

I agree with all the complaints about the guitar though. The Rock Band guitar is a piece of shit. To top off the strummer being crap, the guitar that I was playing on had the green and red buttons' wirings switched. I mean honestly, why the hell would you put out a controller that's such a piece of crap?

ObieX 01-16-2008 08:43 PM

The singing part is actually kinda fun. At least on the normal setting. The game needs A LOT more songs tho imo. I know they're gonna put out more on XBL but fuck paying for more stuff srsly.

This is by far the best part about the guitar. It actually feels more like a real guitar fret board. The GH guitar feels nothing like a guitar. The fact that the buttons are all inline is awesome. I can slide my fingers down the fret board easier and you can recognize where you at based on your finger placement. The strum bar being tighter also feels way better, you can actually pluck the guitar and not have to hear that damn clicking.

The guitar portion of the game is much easier than the GH version, though. I could actually beat songs on expert and some of the songs are actually easier in my opinion on expert than they are on hard. On GH I can't touch expert. The game is based around working as a team though, unlike in GH where it's just you so the individual parts are probably going to be easier to make it playable as a whole.

Also, to the person who said when you go higher the game registers it as lower, that means you are going into a different octave. The game doesn't register the words unless you are in the "Talky Parts" (and even then I am not so sure) it just registers the tone. So when you are going higher but the game is recognizing it as lower you are going too high and reaching a higher octave but the tone is a lower note.

This game is great! I love it, too bad my friends are horrible drum players/singers/bass players.

ObieX 01-16-2008 10:20 PM

Yea its a different octave.. if you go from the lowest note your voice can do to the highest you can see it climb through the scale a few times. It just takes a bit of practice to get down. This game isn't shy about letting someone who thinks they're a good singer know they suck. :p

this might be a lil out of topic, but check this out.

its a guitar hero drum mod, guy who made it is very talented and creative.

how he made it

guthmund 02-13-2008 09:11 AM

That is strange...awesome, but strange...

I got my replacement Strat and it's a lot better than the crap that came in the original box. The fretboard keys now "clack" a bit, but not nearly as bad as the GH Les Paul controller.

I've just finished up the push-button bass pedal mod for the drums, which attaches to a real drum pedal, in an effort to improve my drumming skill set.

I'm having a lot of fun with it and I haven't even touched the vocal stuff yet.

parched_son 02-14-2008 08:15 AM

Really enjoy the game. Kids and I play quite a bit, but the wife hates it. To quiet down the drum set go to ebay and search for the covers. Basically, they are felt pads that drop noise by about 50%. I also hate the guitar, and can't play it well, but kids seem to have no problems.
