After my HD died I havent reinstalled tf2, it just doesn't have the kind of game play that holds my attention.

COD4 on the other hand does for now, it reminds me of old school CS and when the settings are set right on hard core it plays pretty much the same but with better graphics/guns/options.

Thanks.

Even though Heavies are listed under Defense, they are more effective on offensive. If you want to be a good support character, a single good medic can carry the entire team. You'll see a lot of heavy/medic combos that perform well out there, but, personally, I prefer the soldier/medic combo.

I've been wandering away from playing the Soldier recently. I've enjoyed some rounds as a Heavy for sure. In the right spot, and with good evasive plans, he's quite dangerous. I was also experimenting (with marginal success) with the more strategic Demoman. I think I'll enjoy playing him once I get him down.

I most recently tried the Medic. I liked it quite a bit. I think I'll be playing him a lot. Everyone likes the Medic. Uber'ed Pyros are most fearful, as are Heavies.

NeverBorn 01-07-2008 01:23 AM

5088 or Malfean. Hell you might try to add Neverborn. One of those should work. I've been eating breathing and sleeping TF2 since the break..

You'll also pick up the easiest assists ever if you sit beside a good sniper and heal him.

Lasereth 01-07-2008 06:09 PM

I can't get the hang of any other class in TF2 except the medic. The medic is by far the most fun for me. It seems like I die over and over as any other class unless I have a medic with me, and that sure as hell never happens.

If you're a good medic, you're easily the most valued member of the team.

I just unlocked the "Team Doctor" accomplishment last night. :) My highest point total so far (a measly 5) was earned as a Medic. I got those 5 points last night, too. :) I'm really dividing my time between Medic and Heavy, with a smattering of Soldier. I choose the Heavy/Medic often because that's what the team is lacking. I tend to lean towards a strategy of support/defense. It's more my style.

Plus I like the idea of mowing down Scouts.

Kadath 01-09-2008 08:06 AM

Lately I've been pulling BSOD after 45 minutes or an hour of play; it's very frustrating. I still love the game, though. I want medic achievements!

If I go as medic, I usually end up taking down 10-20 people before dying with my partner. That's if the partner isn't an idiot (not watching my back).

Exciting new changes to the world of TF2:

Unlockables NOOOOOOO. Wait, what am I worried about. The Meet the _____ videos aren't even all out yet, they'll never get this content done.

ironpham 01-23-2008 07:58 PM

I propose a TFP game sometime. Anyone else down?

And Hal, shoot me an IM next time you play. I wanna see your snipah skills in action.

Siege 01-24-2008 07:03 AM

I'll play depending on when you guys decide to play.

35 new achievements for each class? Good God.

Baraka_Guru 01-24-2008 11:19 AM

I'm down.

Kadath 01-25-2008 07:43 AM

Yeah, I'm in as long as it's not next week, when I will be away.

Lasereth 01-25-2008 08:26 AM

I'm getting really into the Heavy class. I have a coworker who plays medic with me at night. We both record TF2 videos with We Game. Anyone else use this app/site? It's pretty awesome. This is a video of me as Heavy taken from the coworker medic's perspective:

I'm not sure I'm looking forward to the unlockables. I am looking forward to the new mine cart game mode though. Sounds awesome.

Esoteric 01-25-2008 08:34 AM

Medic + Pyro is insanely fun.

Baraka_Guru 01-25-2008 10:11 AM

As is sentry/dispenser/Engineer + Heavy. Epic defense.

My friend and I are the best 2Fort intel defenders ever. Engineer + Demoman, we were literally dominating their whole team. This is on the 360 version though.

Nice work. I only discovered my own combination when doing a last-ditch effort to defend point "C" on the Gravelpit map. I was running out of ammo and I stood beside an Engineer and his junk camped out on a side ramp. Between me and his MkIII Sentry, we were a rain of unlimited bullets that showered down upon the enemy. God, it was fun.

Kadath 03-06-2008 10:59 AM

I'm super disappointed about the lack of TFP community TF2 play and was reminded only when Mondak happened to jump into a game I was in yesterday. What happened, people?

Esoteric 03-06-2008 11:07 AM

I'd play with you guys if I had the PC version, but I'm on 360. :[

I just couldn't get into it, cod4 is more my style.

When my HD crashed I didn't even bother to reinstall TF2.

Play a spy/sniper.

I absolutely love good spies. I'm somewhere between terrible and decent as one, but I've been able to solo capture intelligence with saps/stealth when my team couldn't get through the front door.

Snipers are probably the easiest way to get solo kills if you're any good at aiming. They dont "breathe" like snipers in most games so the cursor never moves by itself.
On the other hand, I pretty much despise people that play snipers because they spend the majority of their time trying to kill other snipers, instead of helping the team progress.

Lasereth 03-12-2008 12:49 PM

I started playing other classes besides Heavy and Medic. My current favorites are Pyro and Scout. I had a 21-kill streak as Scout the other night.

ironpham 03-12-2008 09:36 PM

That's a pretty ridiculous Scout spree. As a Scout, I think my record is only like 6. Last time I played though, I was starting to get into Demoman. Oh my god, they are damn hardcore. A good Demoman/Medic combo can wipe out an entire team.

I'm sure I'll be getting back into this game in the near future, so look out for the DOOMTRAIN!

The best counter to snipers, is to not play sniper. this is especially true in 2fort.

I will be back when A) I have more time, and B) I upgrade my computer. I expect/hope both these factors to converge at the end of April.

toddp65 03-19-2008 03:34 AM

I love this game--been playing it steady since about September...I abandoned ut2004 for it and have never went back. I play soldier almost exclusively--sometimes engineer--mostly because it reminds me of my rocket launcher days on ut2004 and i like shooting big bombs!

Look for me 'Rectifier'....

I'm guilty of buying the whole orange box and barely playing half life and strictly playing tf2!

That's just like, your opinion man...

Thing I can't stand with tf2 is having to lead people with every gun, from the shotguns to rocket launchers, needle guns, and sniper rifle.

ironpham 04-15-2008 08:02 AM

I don't get what's wrong with having to lead people. I mean, all you have to do is set the crosshair in front of the person instead of on the person. I'm not saying tf2 is worse or better than cod4, but if that's a reason for not liking tf2, then I think it's kind of a lame reason.

Nothing wrong with it, I'm just so used to insta hit weapons from CS and cod4. I'm actually getting back into a TF2 team soon I believe.

I used to play TF2 all the time till cod4 came out. Cod4 kinda killed the TF2 community so my team went to cod4. However, TF2 seems to be making a comback now.

ironpham 04-30-2008 09:36 AM

The new medic achievements are out. Some of them are absolutely ridiculous and seem nearly impossible to get. There's a "cheat" you can do to unlock them though. I didn't really care for the achievements. I just wanted to try the new guns. To get them unlocked, go to the developer console and type in "achievement_unlock_all". I think it has to be on a specific server that allows cheats.

I like the new syringe and bonesaw. I'm not a big fan of the new healing gun though. It doesn't seem that helpful to the team.

The new map is cool too.

Kadath 04-30-2008 11:22 AM

Today's update:

Team Fortress 2 Client

Removed TF2 achievement console commands

Fucking Valve, I don't want to grind a hojillion hours on medic for achievements to get weapons just give me the fucking weapons.

ironpham 04-30-2008 09:03 PM

Yeah, I just found that out too. Sucks, but I don't really play medic anyways. The only gun that I felt was worthwhile was the syringe gun which I think is the first milestone, so it's not that bad.

Siege 05-02-2008 10:08 AM

it's like adding a mmorpg element to a first person shooter...

sitting around grinding items isn't my idea of fun....

nor is getting killed by people with far superior equipment..... good job valve! go and alienate the casual player!

Cynthetiq 05-02-2008 10:19 AM

I haven't been on in many months, and I figured I'd see what the cart map was like, along with these new achievements.

Low and behold I jump onto one server where that's all people are doing. No, they aren't warring to get achievements, they are playing cooperatively blue and red to make sure they can get the achievements.

that was lame. I logged off and played Lumines instead.

Kadath 05-02-2008 10:22 AM

To be honest the weapons aren't necessarily superior. But what cyn described is the real problem here, people grinding the achievements. I did this in a private server with a group of people who had agreed ahead of time to do it, and that was fine for an hour, and then we went and played for real. This will settle down but Valve needs to rethink their strategy on this.

skier 05-10-2008 06:01 PM

hmm?

the new syringe gun is absolutely superior. It completely decimates pyros and scouts, classes supposed to take out soft targets (the medic). I've gone from a 90-10 ratio of kills on medics playing as a scout to more of a 30-70 ratio.

Siege 06-04-2008 08:30 PM

in recent news, i got the new syringe gun legitimately....

and in more pressing news medics are now the silliest class around. 2 medics with ubersaws win the game hands down. permanent uber anyone?

Lasereth 06-05-2008 05:46 AM

Goldrush is so damn addicting. It's resparked my interest in Engineer. Lots of cool locations for engineery nests on Goldrush. Valve really put effort into this map....every class is useful in some way.

Lasereth 06-17-2008 11:51 AM

Pyro achievements and unlocks are coming Thursday. The medic achievements and unlocks turned out for the best so I'm hoping the Pyro will do the same. BTW Meet the Sniper is out today for viewing on the Steam website and it's great.

skier 06-17-2008 01:59 PM

Here's one I didn't see yet; released in April:

TOMORROW!

http://www.steampowered.com/pyro/?pw=presspreview

Lasereth 06-18-2008 07:55 AM

Holy GOD the pyro achievements and unlockables look amazing. And the new default flamethrower change of being able to use a compressed air burst to blow back enemies/grenades/rockets, etc. is absolutely gamechanging. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cynthetiq 06-18-2008 08:10 AM

i clicked to update my client already :) so that if I get a few minutes, I'll check it out.

Lokus 06-19-2008 12:09 PM

I'm also glad to see the Pyro achievements are much saner this time around. A lot of the medic achievements were crap that forced one to either cheat or play counter to the interests of the team. The Pyro still has some stuff like that (kill someone with a taunt? What the hell?!) but it's much better than the Medic ones. I can't wait for the update, the Pyro is easily my favorite class even if I kinda suck at it, the compressed air will definitely help. I can't count the number of times I got killed by a Soldier in close quarters or even medium range where I can't dodge the rockets.

skier 06-19-2008 06:31 PM

my god I love this update

I play as a heavy and it is extremely enjoyable to see new pyros run straight at sasha over and over again

Was playing a pub and was getting 10:1 kill ratios

blahblah454 06-21-2008 02:45 PM

Just played it for like 5 min. I have no idea what I am doing.

Baraka_Guru 06-21-2008 03:49 PM

I was recently reminded just how much I suck at this game.

Lasereth 06-23-2008 04:31 PM

Here's a vid of me as Heavy playing with a friend as medic (medic's perspective). We are a damn killing machine. We work so well as a team that it's ridiculous. On most maps we are called hackers and the other team frequently screams about us having to be apart for them to win. Heavy is definitely my favorite and best class and it really shows what a combo can do.

That's a pretty good video, and you guys do work well together. My only quarrel is that the medic needs to heal other people. It seems to work out without it here because everyone is targeting you, but maybe on a different server or against a different team, it might not work out as well.

Other than that though, you got me beat on record kills/assists and probably damage too.

Oh trust me, he heals other people normally. The only reason he didn't here is because he saw that we were starting to make a sick record. We were also just screwing around on a custom server also. He's the best medic I've ever played with and keeps the whole team up under normal circumstances.

ironpham 07-30-2008 09:54 AM

In case anyone still plays this other than me, a new patch came out that nerfed the last pyro patch. The backburner now doesn't have the +50 health bonus. Also, no more shooting through the gates.

Lasereth 07-30-2008 10:42 AM

The Heavy is getting the next unlockable patch. I can't wait because Heavy is my favorite (and best) class.

The TF2 community is up in flames after the Backburner nerf. Of course before the patch everyone said the BB was overpowered and now they say it's worthless. TF2 patches remind me of WoW patches so much.

ironpham 07-30-2008 11:19 AM

BB wouldn't be worthless if the hit detection wasn't so terrible. A spy can backstab from any direction, but the BB hardly ever crits even though you are directly behind the person.

The leafblower is the way to go anyways. It just has so much more utility.

Hopefully the Heavy patch comes out soon though. I think it was only 2 months between medic and pyro, so this coming month maybe?

By the way Lasereth, what's your nick on steam?

Siege 07-30-2008 07:12 PM

while i think 50 health was too much (soldier type pryos wtf?!), 0 health without any survivability bonus just isn't worth it. Personally, i would've loved to have seen a minor speed increase and no health increase. As it is now, it's rather difficult to chase a number of the classes.

Apokx 07-30-2008 07:29 PM

So the backburner sucks now. Having the extra HP was a nice defense against Soldiers, but now the pushback effect against rockets will be superior. A shame really, since the new axe was crap.

ironpham 07-30-2008 07:50 PM

I don't think the new axe is bad. It can knock out an overhealed heavy in 2 hits. Only the spy and sniper can beat that.

And yeah, I agree Siege. The health bonus was kind of overpowered. It was lame that it put them higher than the soldier. I was thinking instead of a permanent speed boost, maybe sprint as secondary that lasts a couple of seconds with the same recharge as the spy's cloak. I mean, they're hard enough to hit in the head as a sniper as it is (small head). Any faster and it would be near impossible.

So after playing with you tonight for a little on Gravel Pit, I noticed that he pretty much just stuck his healbeam on you. From what I saw, he passed up everyone else most of the time. Every now and then he would top someone off. Honestly, I didn't mind too much because the team did fine, but like I said before, he needs to heal the rest of the time and keep everyone topped off as much as possible.

Hey it's no problem. I do admit he sticks to me a majority of the time but I can't blame him. We get 10+ people dead consistently and frequently win the match for our team. When I play medic I rarely ever find anyone that can rack up more than a couple of kills, much less take a point. Like players stick to like players.

It's also fun (though greedy) to play with friends most of the time because then you have stuff to talk about while at work.

BTW the new K.G.B. KILLING GLOVES OF BOXING look awesome for the Heavy. I can imagine some hilarity ensuing over these.

ironpham 08-13-2008 11:19 AM

I feel you on that. I've got a friend who likes to play medic (though mostly because he sucks at everything else). He sticks to me much like your friend sticks to you. It is nice. I tell him to heal other people though because when I have a medic on me like that, I usually blow it. I guess it's too much pressure for me.

It's not like it mattered too much or even at all to me that he stuck to you. I mean, we did dominate the entire time. It also doesn't bother me that sticking to one person doesn't always help a team win (I'm guilty of doing it every now and again myself). The only part that really bothered me was and always will be with any medic is that if I'm next to you with less than full, then at the very least fill me up. Don't even do it for me or the team. Do it to help fill your uber bar faster.

As for the update, yeah this one seems ridiculous. I love the boxing gloves already. I can imagine server-wide boxing-fests already. I've been reading around, and some people are speculating that the secondary unlock is a sandwich to replace the shotty. Taunting with it will heal X amount of health. The primary unlock is another minigun that is suppose to make whoever it hits with it do less damage and move slower. I don't know how much I can believe those, but by far the KGB dominates those.

Lasereth 08-13-2008 03:02 PM

The sandwiches will be OP if it's real. I own people bad enough right now, with or without a medic (obviously a lot more with a medic). Well, it will be OP for good heavies, not all heavies because most heavies suck really bad. But seriously...a refillable health unlock? If it's anything more than 25 HP restored then I will be in heaven, also debating whether it is OP or not. I guess it's technically not OP unless even the crappy heavies are owning people and that's not gonna happen.

ironpham 08-13-2008 04:09 PM

I agree. The sandwich is definitely a little bit off the wall. But, at least that's just speculation. Another one I read was that it had to do with the new game type. Something along the lines of the hunted game type where the heavy has to eat or get a sandwich while the opposing team tries to stop him. I think that would be massively fun.

I recall Valve saying they wouldn't release any weapons that have a major impact on how other players move, so that means the slowing minigun probably isn't true. Valve have said the airblast and rocket/sticky juggling are as far as they're willing to go.

ironpham 08-15-2008 12:06 PM

Looks like the minigun unlock was somewhat true. It does 25% less damage, but it will slow down anyone it hits for an instant. Sounds extremely annoying in my opinion. I'm sure Lasereth will get a kick out of it though!

Lasereth 08-16-2008 06:13 PM

I'm really not too excited about the new minigun. Enemies rarely get away from me so it seems like a novelty except with a huge damage reduction (which is REAL bad). It may be useful in very specific situations like defending a last cap against a huge rush of enemies but other than that I see Sasha remaining my primary gun.

I'd say it's quite useful from a team perspective. Your goal is to just hit everyone (not really kill them) and then your team's aoe damagers can kill everyone easily.

Depending on how much the slowing effect is, this could potentially throw off team mates if they don't have hitscan weapons (ie, your soldiers and demomen). They'd have to adjust how much they lead their opponents, though splash damage would alleviate the inconvenience somewhat.

Personally, I'll stick with Sasha.

Holy cow, the Arena mode is true. This is totally game-changing. I can't wait to try it out!!!! I wonder how viable Heavies will be.......

ironpham 08-19-2008 02:42 PM

No, I can't believe the sandwich thing is true. Who thought up that idea?

The "sandvich" is real.

Quote:

The Sandvich is the Heavy’s first unlockable. It tastes as good as it looks and heals 120 health. Like in real life, the decision to eat a Sandvich must not be taken lightly; The Heavy is completely vulnerable during the four second eating process, and his loud, happy sounds of vigorous chewing will draw enemies like tiny ant cowards to a picnic. OF DEATH. On the bright side, the Heavy’s Sandvich supply is unlimited, so his only real concern is being caught short while enjoying this delicious edible device. The Sandvich is a great tool for a Heavy defending an area, as it gives him the ability to replenish health between enemy waves without having to abandon his post. Similarly, an offensive Heavy without a Medic can step back from the front line and grab a quick snack before resuming his rampage. Beware, however: the Heavy must set aside his shotgun to take the Sandvich, and enemy Snipers are much more dangerous for a Heavy wielding only a minigun.
Team Fortress 2 - A Heavy Update

bhamv 08-20-2008 07:38 AM

Just now I played as a Medic attacking on Gravelpit. We'd capped A and B, and we were trying to cap C. We had about 6 Heavies on our team, and they were all crowded around the doorway leading from B to C.

The Heavies would take turns stepping through the door, firing their miniguns. Inevitably they'd take damage, so they'd step back and start muching their sandviches, while I topped off their health. It was hilarious, an unbreakable chain of hungry Heavies.

Until an ubered Pyro came in and ruined all the fun, of course.

Lasereth 03-19-2009 06:21 AM

I'm still addicted to this game. I have like 250 hours logged on it which is more than any other FPS I've ever played (except maybe BF1942 with DC mod). I play it 2-4 nights per week and Heavy is still my favorite class.

I made a TF2 movie of a 6v6 match I did a few weeks ago. Make sure to watch in HQ!!!!

ironpham 04-14-2009 05:31 PM

Wow, you are extremely aware of your surroundings. Impressive. I've not scrimmed in a long time, but if I can get my group together again, would you accept a friendly challenge?

Of course! We are very informal though so we'd probably have 2-3 new people if it worked out.

Great. And, don't worry, we're informal too. Alright, I'll see if I can get my team together.

ironpham 04-17-2009 05:28 PM

Ok, Mr. Lasereth. My team has been assembled. How do we decide the date? Also, do you guys have a server? If not, I might be able to score one for us, but I'm not 100% on that.

Lasereth 04-20-2009 07:04 AM

Ok I will see if I can schedule a match. None of us have a server so us finding one is definitely a no-go.

ironpham 04-20-2009 08:10 AM

My team can pretty much only do this on weekends if that's ok.

Same here.

That's a great video. I'm a TF2 neophyte (and late to the party, as usual).

Question: how did you suss out the spies so easily? As of now, they are the bane of my existence.
