GTA III or IV ? (PC)
i have both games and i just got gta4.
i personally think that vice city is much crappier than gta3. yes, vice city does have a better plot, but the graphics are way better is gta3. what happened here? btw, i noticed that gta3 is made by rockstar games and gta4 is made by rockstar north. i dont think it's my pc either, it has a shitload of processing power. |
I dunno. I have the PC versions of both and the graphics in terms of pixel size (blockiness), framerate and level load times are much better in GTA:VC. In addition, the dark atmosphere of Liberty City isn't half as nice as Vice City, which the sunsets and changing weather.
VC has a much better plot too. Ray Liotta doing the lead? Ms. Cleo as a Jamaican gang leader? Great stuff! I also liked that you really were a character in VC, not just some nameless nobody like in GTAIII. Plus, adding scooters and motorcycles and helos to VC made it all the better. The radio was better in VC as well. |

Vice IMO is far superior to GTA3, graphically and in every other aspect whether it be plot or technical issues. Quote:

i dont dont know why gta4 is showing up all crappy on mine, i'll post screenshots soon |
I love Vice City - Tons of fun.
Also being a fan of Miami Vice when i was younger helps. |
I'm on my second run through VC; I also did two runs more or less all the way through GTA3. The "Story" as it is does benefit a lot by having Tommy as an actual character, if it does restrict the player--one of the times through GTA3, I was the nice guy, which worked okay. :P There's not as much a sense of progression with the "properties"; there's less of a story per se, as far as I can see. There are only two serious bad guys: Cortez and Sonny. No more full story like GTA3; you spend your time running around getting the female lead a job as a porn star.
But for all that, it's a _much_ nicer game. The helicopters and bikes cannot be lived without. The bikes, cause they're hella fun to drive and jump. The choppers, because you can see the city from above, which is just really neat in itself, and also helps understand the layout for use "downstairs". The story, as it is, is fun and well-done. The missions are varied and interesting. It has pretty good replay value--I'm, as I said, on my second run. There's the usual delightful details that made GTA3: the radio, wonderful as ever but sadly missing classical music, the pedestrian scripts and actions, the side-missions. Oh! And the new in-game mini-map is a Godsend. In sum? Good game. Must buy; better than GTA3, but still a solid successor. (As opposed to being, say, winamp3) I'm not tired of this format yet, and want more! More cars, bigger cities, more aircraft! More bikes! More more more! :P |

Oh, and it's not GTA IV: Vice City, it's just GTA: Vice City. GTA IV will be coming later. And yes, VC has a much better plot. The whole ending scene really made you feel like you accomplished something. "There is no up north any more. It's all down south." Not to mention that a 100% completion in GTA III doesn't give you anything. |
well, you and your gf in gta3 walk into the sun happily ever after!
what about graphics though? i really think gta3 graphics are better. http://www.cox-internet.com/ashish/gta3.jpg ----------- http://www.cox-internet.com/ashish/gta4.jpg dont get me wrong, i love gta4 more than gta3. |
Is it true that you can enter the shops in VC? THat was one of the things I thought was lacking in GTIII was the lack of inside space. I heard there was more in VC.
|
yeah, you can enter shops, police stations, buildings etc...
hell, u can even rob stores! but you gotta make sure you kill the cashier fast, otherwise he'll trip the alarm. |
Hey "The_Dude" Not sure about you but basically everyone I've talked to says that Vice City as far as requirements is a lot more lenient. What Geforce 4 are you using though? Also, I like Vice City overall more because as stated earlier...the helo's and the bikes kick ass...though I do like GTA 3's city layout better. It just feels bigger to me. Graphically overall though Vice City wins with the bigger color pallette and the overall cleaner look and the ability to run higher resolutions and not bog down as freakishly as GTA 3.

I just bought Vice City..... and for the life of me I can't remember how to change the car steering to the mouse :( It's driving me crazy! I have GTA III too and I had it set so I could steer with the mouse..... anybody know how to change it?

Rockstar North, formerly DMA, was transformed into an extension of Rockstar Games, kinda like Ion Storm Austin, the home of Warren Spector's Deus Ex series, was an extension of Ion Storm's old HQ in Dallas, where Daikatana was developed. Eidos publishes Ion's games, if I recall correctly. |
The reason the graphics are dropped in Vice City is because of all the other things you can do, to bring the point to a lower scientific level.
The more rendering, the more processer and VC memory it's going to use. If there's too much to process, it will run slower on older machines. That's a big part of the community, so rather than exclusing a large chunk of the gaming community, they bring the graphics down a notch. |

it should.
i remember the first time i loaded up gta3, it had to convert graphics to better suit my card. i dont think vice city did that. |
i gotta say GTA3. this is mostly because it's the orginal. no one thought it would be as good as it was. plus by the time i got VICE CITY i was already tired of GTA3. and vice city isn't different enough to offer a new experiance. though i love the helos and the Vespas and bikes and the nuts ass vice city police (and stealing thier garb). the GTA3 fun factor is much greater. Not having to worry about money made it more fun. and being nameless allowed yourself to be put in the game (with or without mods...i have CRAZZZY mods though). And i love the darkness of new york city. where you only have 2 options...Rain or no rain.
|
The_Dude, are you sure your not playing in a higher resolution in gta3 then you are in VC, try bumping your res in vice city up, because thats what the problem looks like
|
I could never get into GTA3. I don't know why, I didn't hate the game, it just didn't do it for me. Out of boredom, I started playing Vice City, and REALLY like it. I'm about halfway in, and am loving it. The environment is gorgeous.
|
I played gta3 for a while and got bored but i just got vc and am looking forward to play it. It sounds like it is more fun than 3
|
VC is much more interesting because of Ray Liotta (or even just the fact that they give the player character an identity and a voice). III was revolutionary, but its story was much looser and there wasn't enough in the way of boats and there weren't any helicopters. VC had me hooked for the longest time. Now I'm all for BF1942, but that's another story :)
|
Ray Liotta actually did do the voice? I didn't even notice. I do agree that having your character actually interact with people makes the experience a lot better.
|
Just started playing VC. So far it doesn't seem all the different from GTA3. But that's not a bad thing!
|
It's pretty much the same graphics engine, the problem is that the port for Vice City was just pooped out, I don't think they put much effort into it.
I vote for Vice City, motorcycles are fun, helicopters are fun, the 80's environment is cool. I like it. |
Vice City easily because of the variety of vehicles.
the choppers, motorbikes and stuff are seriously cool!! and other little things like the radio stations are funnier, and play real cool music, and the changes of clothes...these little things add up to an unbelievable game. and i think the storyline is pretty slick as well. |
I am stuck on the damn RC plane level. I can't get the suckers to fly right. Any cheat or way around it?
|
I had more trouble the with the RC helo myself. :) And I'm stuck on some stupid drag race mission that I can't finish.
I did just complete the main story and it was pretty well done. The ending could have been fleshed out a little better, maybe a longer cutscene, but otherwise was top notch. My fav mission was the Luv Fist bomb limo. I'm laughing now thinking about the dialogue. If anyone noticed, Ray Liotta/Miss Cleo were joined by quite a few other well known folks, Janeen Garfolo and Burt Reynolds. Pretty surprising given the reputation these games have in certain circles. |
VC is a gta III expansion
|
No it isn't.
|
Yeh vice city is clerly superior, they shoulda done something with the huge beach tho, it coulda had some cool features or something...
|
Can anybody help me fly the plane on the film mission to drop of the film fliers?
I can't seem to get more than a few feet out of the water when I either try to turn and land back in the water or I just nose dive right back into the ocean. This sucks. I've read that this is probably one of the hardest parts of the game to get the plane to fly but does anybody have any secret tips. BTW I'm playing with just mouse and kb no game pad. On another note I haven't played GTA3 but I'd have to say that VC has so many cool aspects to it that if GTA3 doesn't have 'em I probably wouldn't like playing it nearly as much. Gotta love that Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Lee Majors and Luis Guzman play the characters. Lee Majors is so totally 80's :D |

I voted for GTA: VC. And like someone said its not GTA 4. I have heard that 4 will have multiplayer and i hope thats true. |

It's nearly been a month since I last played Vice City now so I don't think I'll ever get around to it. A shame really, tis a great game but that mission is (seemingly) impossible. |
I like Vice City more...
Owning properties and motorcycles totally does it for me. |

On the number pad you can use 6 to pull the nose of the plane up and use 9 to point the nose down (works just like trying to pop a wheelie on a motorcyle). The plane flys left and right just like driving a car or bike. If you do load the game back up I'd recommend starting with the check point that is to the north (directly behind the plane when you first get in). That way the check points all line up in a big circle and you don't waste your fuel. (It took me two tries to get all of the checkpoints....after crashing about 4 times before I got the hang of flying) The mission after the plane flying is awesome so I would really recommend getting past the plane one. |
Actually, not to nitpick, but GTA 4 is going to be released sometime in the near future...Vice City is just an extension of 3.
Had GTA3 started out as a PC game, Vice City would have only been an expansion, IMO. They only changed the skins, added voices, and a few features. Personally, motorcycles and bailing from cars aren't worth paying $50 instead of $20 for GTA3. But that's just me. As soon as Vice City goes down in price, I'll be buying it, just to launch cars off of the mall parking garage. :) |

GTA3 blew me away
I heard that Grand Theft Auto 3 was coming out for PS2, and I was like "They're actually making another one of those?" Shocking surprise later, and I'm hooked. I think Vice City was a second chance to make GTA3 the way it should have been. They had a bigger budget this time after GTA3s massive success, and wanted to take the game further. |
