Those of you with 360s...

Marathon has hit Live Arcade, and I strongly recommend you download it if you're remotely interested in the legacy from which Halo spawned, you enjoy deep and intelligent single-player scenarios and/or you'd like to play one of the most kickarse deathmatches around.

I would try it if my 360 didn't fuckin die on me. Called M$ on Tuesday and they said they'd be sending out a box within 7 days. Well, I'm still waiting on that box...sigh.

hmmm, I dunno hulk. I played Marathon on my old Mac back in the day. It was great. but that's like telling a fan of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars that they should try playing Doom. It's just... not the same. Thinking of 90's gaming makes me kinda queasy. Unless it's on the NES... then it's just classic!

I downloaded the trial and tried playing it. Looks interesting, but two-three minutes in, I got one helluva headache and started feeling sick.

Turns out I'm not the only one.

The first person shooter genre has always been synonymous with motion sickness, but when the ol' iron guts here at Joystiq started feeling queasy after playing Marathon: Durandal for Xbox Live Arcade, we knew something was wrong. Sure enough, threads began to pop up all over the place and even IGN noted in their official review that four of their editors felt ill while playing. To find out what's to blame for this poké-esque epidemic, we talked to Freeverse's Bruce Morrison, project lead on Marathon: Durandal.

"Marathon's obvious popularity, the sudden forum 'meme' of it making you sick, and the wealth of really excellent hurl jokes ... I think that explains a lot of it." teases Bruce. In all seriousness, he explains, "No one at Freeverse, Microsoft, Bungie, VMC or our testing and localization partners reported any motion sickness issues and many of us have logged hundreds of hours of playtime. So we really don't believe the problem is universal. However, a good number of people will experience motion sickness with any FPS."

While Freeverse is planning on investigating this matter, Bruce does have some suggestions. First, try playing with the "camera bob" option set to on as the lack of default motion tends to make things appear smoother than they already are. Also, if your mother never told you better, try adjusting your seating position. You may be sitting far too close to your set for this odd, stomach churning experience.

Having taken his advice, we can now enjoy this remastered classic with only a mild headache as the side effect. Thanks, camera bob!
I turned the "bob" back on and sat in the same spot I sit for all my video gaming--none of which, I should point out, I get ill while playing--and it's still a no go. I want to play this one because I did the story, but it looks like I'm going to miss this one.

Not -quite-, unless I was telling Halo 3 fans to play Pathways into Darkness ;) I was just playing an 8-man deathmatch, and I tell ya, it's aged incredibly well. Worth it just for that.

A pity about the motion sickness. Far Cry actually made me a little spun-out, but never Marathon.

Sorry to hear about the motion sickness. Ack!

I'm sure it has aged well, Hulk. I just can't seem to get into old FPS' anymore. Tried Quake a while back, no go. I tried ROTT, nope. I think the only older FPS I love, and I can never find other people to play with, is the original Unreal. Man, that game is STILL killer!

Ahhh .... I remember when Marathon came out on the Mac.
My friends were playing Doom on the PC and were jealous when they tried Marathon on my Mac.
At the time it was a great leap forward for immersiveness in FPS games. It captured a mood of solitude and paranoia that I haven't known in a game since then.

In terms of the single player game - the first Marathon and Marathon Infinity were terrific. I wasn't too crazy about Marathon 2 which was more alien - but it did introduce the dual wielded lever action shotguns.

90% of FPS games make me sick.. Lucky some of the best ones haven't. I don't even wanna attempt this one if it's making people sick that doesn't normally get sick.

guthmund 08-06-2007 01:31 PM

Okay.

It's not as bad now.

Set the 360 to display in 480p, turned down some of the settings on my television and I could play for a bit without getting nauseous....for a while. Everything looks a bit washed out, but at least I can play it.

p.s. I noticed there is a "marathon man" achievement in Halo 3...how cool is that?
