Favourite game(s) of all time?
Might as well start this thread while the boards new =)
Whats your favourite game(s), and why? post a really small review so we know why, and so we can see if its our cup of tea. 1) System Shock 2 This game has more atmosphere then any two other games out there. Its creepy, believable, and fantistically written and scripted. MP is a bit lacking, but the incredible SP more then makes up for it. Great game. 2) Descent Freespace 2 For the first time in a space sim, this game feels like you are fighting space. HUGE capital ships fire massive beams many times the size of your ship at each other, and you seriously feel very insignificant. Apart from that, a wonderfuly written SP campaign and a great MP section makes this an all time favourite. so whats your favourites, and why? |
Diablo2
Replayability of the game is insane. Multiplayer was great before hacking but that wasn't a problem until the game was well passed its prime. Lunar and Lunar 2 Two great stories. Not only are the games good, they also came packaged with toys and collectables :) Castlevania(s) All the 2d versons of the game are great. The 3d versions weren't great but Gameboy advance is keeping the series alive. Honorable mentions: Zelda Metroid Final Fantasy 6/7/9/tactics Resident Evils Silent Hills Other great games that just aren't coming to mind right now. |
RPG: Fallout
Soldier sim: Operation Flashpoint Online: Battlefield 1942 |
I don't play PC games much but this one guy keeps babbling about Homeworld. He always goes into detail about how 3d tactical combat is so great, it's the first game to really do it right, blah blah.
|
I'm old school, so I'd have to say Mike Tyson's Punchout was one fo the greatest of all time, on the PC I enjoy Diablo 2, and Simcity 2000 was great.
|
Quake 1 - Best level design you'll ever find in a shooter. The feel was so perfect.
Asheron's Call - Best MMORPG ever. Tetris/Tetrinet - So simple... so perfect. |
Operation Flashpoint
Ground Control |
Civilizations I-III. So much stuff going on, such a delicate balancing act.
|
I like FPS games mostly, and my two favorites were the original Quake and the original Unreal Tournament.
|
Half-Life: The single player is still one of if not the best single player experience ever. Great story line and alot of interactivity. Lots of "Oh shit" factor too. It wasn't too "solve the puzzle" typy of SP but just a matter of staying alive.
Also has some of the best mods out. Still worth playing online despite its age. |
1. Counterstrike all the way, i am an addict
2. Diablo II 3. Gothic |
I lost many a month on Championship manager for the old amiga. Also on pc
Console wise i was hooked on castlevania. Also thinking back i spent a whole weekend completing everything on Greatest Heavywieghts on the mega drive (sega) Just cause Holyfield was in it and he was my hero. |
Tie Fighter :D
The graphics may not hold up against todays standards, but working for Darth Vader was the best! |
No One Lives Forever 1
Deus Ex Natural Selection (hl mod) Thief 2 BF1942 |
System Shock 1 and 2
Fallout 1 and 2 Max Payne Deus Ex Team Fortress Classic (HL version) Secret of Monkey Island Day of the Tentacle Privateer Heroes of Might and Magic III Baldur's Gate (the whole series) Roller Coaster Tycoon Civilization II to name a few |
Duck Hunt
|
Chrono Trigger.
Years later, and I still love the storyline. |
Myth I: TFL
Four years and it's still my sole game that lasts. :D |
Final Fantasy IV (FF2 here in the us for the SNES) changed my life. that sounds corny corny but it did. I get teary eyed to this day if i hear FFj4 music!
Xenogears. so. fucking. awesome. Plotplotplo -happy sssigh- Lunar SSSC, Baldur's gate series, FFVII of course and FFVI. Vagrant Story, Suikoden 3, the Ogre tactics series, FFT, Xenosaga........ ohmygod there are too many masterpieces. other than rpgs... Street Fighter Alpha 3, X-Men VS SF on the Sega Saturn, Tekken 2, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk series, i also thoroughly enjoyed Turok 2.... but that's been.. what. four years? this is like 10% of the games i could spout to be on my _favorites_ list :) FFIV! |
Tetris - I still love it.
Chrono Trigger - A few weeks Ill never get back. Deus Ex - Close to perfect. Street Fighter 2 (Arcade) - A revolution. Metal Gear Solid - "Snake? SNAKE??! NoooOOOOo!!" Yu Gi Oh (GBA) - strangely addictive. |
Jedi Knigt II: Jedi Outcast
Splinter Cell Metal Gear Solid 1 MYST RiVeN DooM 1 DooM II Quake II Mafia Star Wars: Bounty Hunter I can't choose, dear me, need a life, too many games |
1. Ocarina of time... never have i played a better game, especially at the end, i just wanted it to go on and on with the dark atmosphere....
2. Super Smash Bros. (Melee) i hate all other fighters execpt for this series... pure simple fun. 3. Super Metroid... downloaded the rom, it was great... beat it about 5 times. 4. Warcraft 3... best RTS i've played... i like it much better then starcraft, but thats more a personal preference.. i don't own a ps2, psx, so i'm missing out on all the really great RPGs.... i wish nintendo would re-release some of the FF and chrono trigger for GBA.. |
Super Metroid, simply amazing a 16-bit game still is fun to play
for PC though any Command and Conquer games, i love 'em! also the Total War series are some serious campaigning games |
nhl 94'

Operation Flashpoint
A real kick in the pants when it came out. Still play it. Sometimes a real bear and the physics are "wacky" at times, it still has me coming back. System Shock (1) Really state of the art in it's time. It's mix between a FPS and an RPG along with it's story element made it a favorite for me. Granted, nothing beats the howl of psionic monkeys in the sequel (a sound which haunts me even now) but it had it's own immersion in the day. Freespace 2 I always enjoyed massive shockwaves and huge beam weapons. The game was space sim of the year, but sadly didn't sell well. Same fate for BZ1. Battlezone Released by Activision in 1998. Didn't sell well either, but was one of the few good takes on an old game. Independence War A newtonian space sim which lived up to it's "spaceship in a box" description. Hideously complex and frustrating at times, it somehow paid off to fly a ship with completely manual thrusters, a nice change from the X-Wing dynamic of space sims that preceded it. Falcon 4 I'd say simulation, but in my mind, it still ranks as one of the best simulations of all time. |
The whole Madden Series, GTA, and Super Mario Brothers 3 on the NES
Madden Series because he ownz football games GTA because it's simplistic in it's chaos Super Mario Brothers 3 because it taught me that Plumbers are really really cool |
Back when I was a little kid and didn't have to work for a living.
In the 70's 80's arcade games were everywhere. I had two favorites that I droped tons of quarters into.:( Could have bought a mercades by now.:( :( # 2 was Battle Zone.... I could play for an hour on one quarter.:D #1 ZAXXON... I was soooo good. could play till the power was cut off. Loved the game so much named my doberman Zaxxon. Todays games require thought yuck Could play the others stoned. Really stoned! |
Secret of Monkey Island
Grim Fandango Full Throttle Mafia Half-Life Tribes Mario Kart All GTAs |
GTA 1, London, 2, 3, & Vice City - Open Ended gameplay at it's best, or you could say worst.
Tribes 2 - Big servers are best... something about 60 people fighting in tanks, fighters, bombers, and on foot is just plain fun. Doom 1 & 2 - Classics, and they're even more fun with the mods that add in 3d models. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Best open-ended RPG I've ever played. Massive, with tons of mods out to make it even bigger. The Shining Series - Sega's best RPG series. Glad the team responsible for the last ones made the Golden Sun games for GBA. Anything Blizzard - It's Blizzard. 'Nuff said. Command & Conquer... yes, I even liked Tiberian Sun, oh, if only the gameplay was better thought out.... - While bugged by team balance issues, the massive armies and cool technologies of the games are why I like them. Edito!: Adding why since we were asked to ;) |
ah yes, how could i forget the GTA series.
please folks, try to limit your selection to a few, and say why. Don't just list them =) |
Your all time favourite game(s)?
You know, the ones you still don't mind playing every once in a while.
Mine: Carmageddon 2. Earth 2150. Soldiers of Fortune. In that order. |
These are probably 4 of my all-time favorites...
Age of Mythology II Fallout 1 Fallout 2 Total Annihilation |
Warcraft 2,Earthbound,SMRPG
|
nes - contra
|
Warcraft 2
Super Mario Bros. 3 Final Fantasy 3 Counterstrike WCW vs nWo Revenge |
Am basing my list on what games kept me playing longer than I should (ie, weeks and months in some cases)
1. Elite Totally enthralling. One of the first games that made you keep playing because the status actually meant something. You had to put in serious hours to get to Elite. 2. Ultima Underworld II Came on 5 disks and this game was huge (gigantic levels). You kind of got lost in it and it was so atmospheric - even the music was kinda cool. 3. System Shock The first game that really scared me. Sometime I didn't play at night :) 4. Doom I & II What can you say - still remember installing 0.99 and thinking OMG!! 5. Colin McRae Rally II Having owned a rally car once before this is how I get my fix now. 6. Red Alert Just played for hours - reaslised I like war games and this was one of the first RTS games that really worked. Syndicate would be a close second to this. |
Legend of Zelda :) Its so fun :)
|
Too many to list, so I'll put my favorite "classic"
Motherfucking Galaga. |
Wolfinstien 3D-Because it started the whole FPS craze! And that sums all my votes towards the FPS format. ie; Quake UT
The MYST Trilogy-Call me a geek, but I realy enjoyed this collection. Even to the point where I bought the series of books and loved them. EverQuest-I was a slave to this game for two years. Tribes-This is more tactical than FPS, so it gets it's own vote from me. There's more, but I won't name them all, but these are my top four. |
Quote:
I enjoy Mike Tyson's Punchout and Gauntlet Dark Legacy On the PC I still play Diablo 2 every now and then. |
Crazy Taxi (DC)
Tony Hawk 1 (PS) L.O.R.D.(PC) |
Marathon Trilogy(Mac)
Jagged Alliance 2 Unreal Tournament Fallout 2 |
It has to be... QUAKE2 and QUAKE3 !!! :)
non-fps would be Baldurs Gate and Fallout 1 :) |
I am an NES freak, I liked Crystalis and Legend of Zelda( the original)
|
In no particular order:
Red Alert 2 Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy 3/6 Tales of Phantasia Terranigma Half-Life Unreal Tournament Commandos 2 No one Lives Forever |
Metroid (original)
Myst (original) Wolfenstein - "Mein leiben!!!" Unreal Tournament nethack |
Deus Ex - The most in-depth story driven game I ever played. It sucked you in. I can't wait for the sequel. It took 32 hours to beat this game (it gives you the time) and when it was done, I was sad it over…L
StarCraft - The classic. Great story, great play. And Multi-player was outstanding Half-Life - The first game to make me jump – fucking Headcrabs! I'm sure enough has been said about this game… Homeworld - This game is just beautiful to watch. I've never played anything that can compare to it. Tribes - I still play this at work. Great to hop on and frag a few. Twisted Metal 2 - My all time favorite Playstation game. Its all about trash talking. |
Xenogears
Final Fantasy Tactics Unreal Tournament Starcraft Super Smash Bros |
DOOM, doom doom doom.
other than that, legendof zelda, links awakinging for the gameboy was a pretty good ghame, wasted many an hour on that. |
GTA III - PC
For the open ended, non linear gameplay and the awesome mods. I mean where else could you throw grenades at starbucks (shame it didn't do anything!). And go Vigilante hehe... Halo - Xbox One of the best FPS for a long time. Can't have thousands of weapons, and the little tiny touches (such as Marines punchin' the air and swearing) and atmosphere were superb. Also like the fact they didn't try to personalise the main character too much, just called him a general name. Story lines are cool but when I name my character I don't want all the cut scenes to call him alex (or whatever) /rant over :) Spy Hunter - Classic Oldie but goodie, still love playing it on shockwave. Just thought it was fun! |
Tetris - one of the most addictive games ever
Super Mario Brothers 3 - classic GTA 3/VC - really fun to play |
Tetris
Unreal Tournament WWF Wrestlemania 2000 |
Hands Down,
Starcraft: Broodwars Still playing this after 5 years =] |
Deus ex, Xenosaga (not done yet,) Dragon Warrior 3, Ogre Battle 64, Zelda: OoT, more probably, oh yeah DOOM II!!
|
I think the Mega Man series are my favorite games. They are still fun to play after all these years.
Metal Gear Solid gets an honerable mention! |
Lets go with old-school here.
Master of Orion X-Com Jagged Alliance Serf City Panzer General Transport Tycoon Master of Magic Heroes of Might and Magic (HOMM, the 1st and original one) Wing Commander Privateer |
Quote:
Why play that, when you could play Revenge? Seriously, Wrestlemania 2000 was a huge disappointment for me. There is some magic about Revenge that was lost with the subsequent AKI releases. I think the create-a-player mode had something to do with it. AKI is still the master of wrestling games though, hands down. The grappling system is just awesome. Yeah, I bought DefJam Vendetta:D |
Fallout
Fallout2 The only two games actually worth buying for PC. HL mods - DoD and Firearms |
Dragon Warrior 1,2,3 Final Fantasy all of them, Breath Of Fire series, Harvest Moon
|
fallout 2- do anything you wanted to. A large game with heaps of secrets and extras
dues ex- it was great the way you could get those implants and pump yourself up+ it had a cool story |
Thief 1/2 - from Looking Glass Studios (RIP) the same bunch that did System Shock 1/2 and Ultima Underworld 1/2 amongst others. Awesome storylines with nice twists. Amazing atmosphere and some of the most original gameplay ever. Scared me shitless on a number of occasions. 3 difficulty settings that not only offer more challenge, but demand a totally different style of play. Very in-depth background to the games that wasn't actually written out as long boring stories in the manuals, but which could be pieced together in-game.
Team Fortress Classic - Multiplayer only Half-Life mod. Very fast capture-the-flag gameplay and clan matches can be insanely intense. Baldur's Gate series - Just epic. The Secret of Monkey Island - Hilarious. Spent many an hour playing this one with a friend when I was a kid. Myth 1/2 - Brilliant games, very original and VERY challenging. Myth 3 might have been up there too if it weren't for terrible level design, over-use of hero/elite units and a ridiculous end-game. |
X-Com: UFO Defense - My ALL TIME favorite game. I have wasted MONTHS of my life playing this game. I've still got it installed on 3 computers and play it regularly. By far the best squad-based strategy game I've ever played. The atmosphere (music, graphics) is PERFECT for this game and the first time I came across a chrysslid I nearly shit myself (ok, I was 12 at the time).
Doom - Not the first but definately the most innovative FPS ever. Another game with perfect atmosphere and edge of your seat action. Nothing since (except maybe Serious Sam) has been able to match the insanity of this game. Battlezone II - A very overlooked game that provided hours of fun in my old office. After a long day at work we'd all fire up Battlezone and blast each other to smithereens. Fallout - Favorite CRPG by far. I'm a big post-apocalypse fan and this game embodied the genre perfectly. Amazing game. Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games - Another great and often overlooked squad-based strategy game. My main reason for including this was that I built TONS of levels for this game, including a re-enactment of the bank robbery from Reservoir Dogs, complete with Mr. Pink and the rest of the crew. Half-life - Not the most technically amazing game but incredible in all other aspects. The AI in this game freaked me out and it really showed how good a story-line can be in an FPS. BIG departure from the Doom/Quake/Unreal style gameplay. Combat Mission: Beyond Barbossa - BEST computer wargame ever. I'm a tabletop gamer, and nothing else has even come close to that feel except the Combat Mission series of games. I'm a sucker for the Eastern front so this game suits me perfectly. Well, that's by no means an exhaustive list, but those are a few of my faves, most of which still reside on a computer or two at my place. Jason Abels |
Starcraft Custom Map: (use map settings) V-TEC Paintball
---- This was a really fun custom map for starcraft that was more or less capture the flag but to win u need to accumalate 50 kills. U would start with a civilian and bring it to one of 6 tubes to get a different character. the choice of ur character was like a game of rock paper scissors becuz certain characters always remain victorious against another certain characters. example a marine could kill 2 zergling no prob at a decent location and a dragoon could kill 2 marines easily but 1 zergling could kill the dragoon, maybe even 2 of them. I know one day in 10 years im gonna be feening to play it. i miss it now, might get a copy of starcraft and search around for the map see if anyone remembers it. Soul Calibur 2 --- The best fighting game ever, and whats cooler than a fighting game? Nuff said. Super Mario Brothers 3 --- Its the best 2d mario. by far. so many different worlds, so many levels, so many powerups. plus his world revolves around mushrooms.... Galaga --- The best old school arcade game in my opinion. when i get a house of my own ill prolly buy one. double ships rock. perfection is fulfilling. high scores are addictive. always good for a nice session of galaga, cant play too long tho gets repetitive, better in doses. Other favorites that were my favorites at one point but not now were: MK1 and MK2, Adventures of Willy Beamish (pc) Grand Theft Auto 1, GTA3, Goldeneye N64, Killer Instinct man i wish they would reincarnate killer instinct, even tho it would be on xbox since ms owns rare now id buy an xbox just for it if it was true to the original. |
I have to say X-COM, the whole series.
It's nice when a game grows as new titles come out, not just in the sense of quality, but also in history, events interlocking etc. |
Definatly agree on the Starcraft. Would add Lunar SSS, Worms Armageddon, and Unreal Tournament.....becuase sometimes you just have to kill things.

One rpg that really stuck in my mind was Vagrants Story on the PSone. That's prolly the best RPG that I've played in a while and it's been a while since I've played it... Diablo and Diablo 2 Motocross Madness Counter Strike Myst Series Freelancer :D |
My top five:
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - PS2 Contra - NES Earthbound - SNES Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Gameboy Super Smash Brothers: Melee - Gamecube Runners up: River City Ransom - NES, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - N64 |

|
Nethack, Or as it's known in college circles: Gradewreaker :D without a doubt the greatest game ever.
Download it at www.nethack.org Long live "@" |
Final Fantasy VII was probably hands down the best game I have ever played. It had just about everything.
|
Oh man:
1. Ocarina of Time for N64 was great, so expansive, you could ride a horse and shoot arrows at the same time, sometimes when I think about this game I seriously get tempted to go out and buy an N64. There was soo much to do. 2. Soul Calibur for Dreamcast. I still play it almost everyday. Simple to learn, difficult to master. Kilik is my favourite but I'd love to learn Taki - so fast... |
Quote:
That game is still bad ass! |
Betrayal at Krondor - still the best RPG to me. Morrowind comes second.
|
Elite - Spent far too much of my youth on that
Bards Tale - The first great RPG Tac Ops - Much better than CS Civilization - I still go back and play it after all these years |
Counter-Strike will always be a great.. still playing it after 3 years..
Current fav. Hands down, Battlefield 1942, can't get enough |
championship manager 4. Best sports managment simulator out there. I just like the challenge of bringing a local shitty team from England or Italy all the way up to UEFA Champions. Although I've yet to succeed with this new version yet...I'm trying.
|
Earthbound, for those who have never heard of it it was a really unique RPG that takes place in a modern setting.
|
Freelancer in multiplayer definitley you can always have fun on freelancer wit your friends. My second favourites are the entire GTA series and Call Of Duty
|
almost forgot Red Alert 2, Vietnam, RCT2 and tiberium sun
