The great big I got a Wii and you didn't thread
I figured since there was one for the PS3 then why have not start one for the Wii as well :) .
So who got one today? I showed up at Best Buy at 11:10AM (store opened at noon) and there was a line all the way from the doors to around the side of the building. I figured there was no way I was getting one today but then I saw some blue shirts at the end of the line and decided I'd at least check when the next batch would be in. To my surprise they still had two left and they gave me ticket #102. I still had to wait until noon before the store opened and then it took another 45 min for me to actually go through the line to buy it but I got one. I also picked up Zelda and Red Steel plus an extra Wiimote, nunchuck, and 1GB memory card. First impressions, Holy Cow this thing is tiny! I knew it was going to be smaller than the PS3 and XB360 but I wasn't expecting this. It's about the size of a standard internal DVD/CD drive for a PC. Setup was easy enough though you do have to download 2 large updates once you configure it for the internet. Well off to play Zelda. |
My husband picked one up this morning. He was in at Target at 6 AM and they opened at 8. Picked up the Wii and Zelda for it.
I was also really floored how tiny it was too. I'm impressed though.... Wii Sports is really fun! |
I got it through amazon, i was awake since 12 pst untill 8 pst when it became available. I got Zelda and a secon wiimote for it as well. I shall have it here in Guatemala on friday, and the PS3 on wednesday the 29th!!!
I love Amazon, the only way i had to get my hands on both systems was Amazon, and it was able to deliver!!! |
I was at a Gamestop at 11:30pm last night, Preorder ticket in hand. I got the Wii, extra controllers, Zelda, Red Steel, and CoD3.
You're right about the size.. it's pretty surprising. Fairly solid though, which I guess is good :) Zelda and Red Steel have impressed me to no end. I've invested about 7 hours in Zelda, 2-3 in Red Steel, and about an hour into CoD3. CoD3 is alright, and I'll probably get to it later, but right now Zelda and Red Steel are awesome. Boxing is pretty damn fun too :) |
Keep me posted. I'd love you hear your experiences and impressions on games and the system itself.
I haven't had a console since the N64, but the wii is very interesting. |
I was going to try to get one at Target, but the one in town already had a line going around the side of the building by the time I got there, so I decided to camp out on Amazon instead. After 8 hours of staring at the same page and refreshing every five seconds I managed to grab one during the short time they were available. It should be arriving on Tuesday along with a copy of Zelda, a classic controller, and another Wiimote.
|
Had a preorder at toys R us since june
Picked it up today, I've been having a blast. All the games feel very natural, easy to pick up and super monkey ball has been INCREDIBLE. Tilting the remote for the game has been so so so so awesome it's hard to describe |
My roommate got ticket 117/120 at Target this morning. We've only played Wii Sports so far, but its been awesome.
The interface is pretty awesome too. |
Can't wait to get mine now, you bunch of teases damn you!
|
So, impressions of Zelda anyone?
This would be my sole reason to pick up one, just to play Zelda, I bought a Gamecube just to play the Zelda games on it, and have really been thinking about getting a Wii just for Zelda until I get a PS3 |
Zelda is fun so far. The graphics are *not* any better than a top-end GameCube title. The fun factor is definitely there. The controller takes about two hours to get used to; by then, you are a wizard with it. The thing is DAMN accurate. Way more accurate than I would have figured. I can pin point down to about half a cinemeter on the TV from 5' away. The slingshot is cool, you aim with the Wii remote. The game is very similar to Ocarina of Time so far. I've only played about 3 hours though. Fun game, don't be looking for the wow-factor with graphics, though.
|
I managed to get a Wii and I have to say, I totally dig it. So far, it's proved to be a great party console, (i.e. the Wii sports that came with it, especially bowling!) and it's been a lot easier than I thought to get used to.
I haven't gotten to really play the Zelda game as much as I would like to but I do have to agree it really reminds me of the Ocorana of Time (sp). Random question, does anyone know if they are going to make it compatable with the DS? Sorta like the PS3 and PSP? |

They are also planning on releasing a Wii with DVD-playback capabilities at somepoint, however this version will have a higher price point. I'm waiting until December 1 to get my Wii from Wal-mart because I have a special holiday discount as an employee that will give me a 20% discount on it. And being a broke college student that works at walmart.... I need all the help i can get when I'm wasting money on game consoles. |

I'd hate to go out and get a new system just for a DVD playback. I think the only reason to do that is if all the games go onto DVD format, and even then, an add on for the original system really would make Nintendo the most super company ever :D ... Yeesh. |
I'm waiting for the black one to be released. I'm tempted to buy one now, but I think I'll just wait and see what happens..
|
For those that got a Wii, how do you like the controls so far, watched a vid of them playing the bowling and they kept getting horrible spin and couldnt figure it out. Looked like alot of fun though. Also does that "strip" on the tv have to be taped on or just on some type of stand?
|
ill be picking mine up this weekend, any one know if i should pick up Red steel along with zelda? or is red steel a rental?

You can call me when SSB:B comes out. That's the only reason I'd buy a Wii.
|
They're holding it for online play, so it's not so bad! Can't wait for it, either.
|
Pre-ordered from amazon earlier, ETA 11-15th of december, won't have it on release date (as opposed to the games, which i will, fucking tease), but i'm stoked anyway :D
Edited: Went quickly too, amazon sold out of their allocation within seven minutes! |
Any idea when stores should be getting more shipments? All the stores around here were sold out by 8 in the morning on Sunday when I headed out -_-
|
Quote:
Probably nearer christmas (after the european launch on the 8th), it would ruin the point of a christmas release not to have more consoles in the stores by then. |
excuse me while i shoot myself

I noticed that the spin is about the wrist. So far, I haven't had any problems.
The only thing I need to get used to it the whole "enemy, move wrist to slash with sword" bit. Zelda entry level enemies never seemed so fast/hard when you are struggling to get used to the controls! Quote:

Nintendo Wii!!!
I stood in line at 7 am on the 19th to get a Wii. It was totally worth it. Who else got a Wii?
|
Quote:
I'm playing Zelda and Red Steel mainly. Red Steel *is* getting a bit repetitive, but I've experienced no slowdowns, lockups, glitches, etc. As said, Zelda isn't a graphics powerhouse, but it is a lot of fun. Sumo wrestling is TOUGH though. Wii Boxing > Wii Bowling :) |
I watched some G4 a couple days ago and they kept ragging on Red Steel, I have yet to look up any reviews online or anything, but I have not heard anything good about it from what I have seen.
|
...i really want a wii, but i'm going to hold out until late jan-early feb to get one. even though nintendo is known for releasing reliable hardware from launch, kinks and bugs of any new pieces of tech just happen to come with the territory. glad you guys are having fun, though  :)
|
A lot of people are bagging Zelda because it doesn't look as good as RE4. Don't be misled - the largest area in RE4 is a bleak, empty lake. Most of it is confined to tiny rooms. Zelda has a _massive_ draw distance, hence, a lower polycount/texture quality ;)
|
I got mine on launch day from a local Toys R Us with a classic controller, Zelda, COD3, and Marvel: UA.
Unfortunately when I got home, I was told it was a family Christmas present and all of it is now currently sitting in my closet until the 25th *sigh* :( |
Quote:
move into your closet! |
waited about 1.5 hours for mine.
and heads up.. you should get about 30 hours out of the batteries on the wii-mote. which leads to my next two thoughts: i've got two complaints about the wii-mote. 1) doesn't have a battery pack 2) its expensive as hell. $40 for wii-mote and $20 for nunchuk *ouch* |
Only a tenner more than the 360 wireless controller :)
|
But if you get a delux 360 you get it at a reduced cost. Delux 360 is the only way to go, big savings. My additional 360 remote is wired since that is the one the guests have to use :p
|

I guess it's too bad it has a battery pack, but i just bought a cheap charger that fits up to 4 batteries though so i can just swap em out when i need to, and it eliminates the need for a charging wire or a station (which would mean controller downtime) |
Got my Wii a couple days ago... a friend that works at gamestop grabbed one for me on the second shipment, they were holding out for Black Friday, but I got mine wednesday night. Yay.
Also got Zelda, Trauma Center, and Monkey Ball. I'm just barely scratching the surface of Zelda, I'm kind of waiting until I have a full day off work before I jump way into it. I've mainly been playing Trauma Center, which is just an amazing game. The graphics are really nothing very special, and the story is your stereotypical japanese over-the-top manga-esque plotline. The cutscenes remind me of japanese dating sim games (yes, I've played one, yes, I'm a loser), but the actual gameplay is top notch. Really intense, and difficult but not unfair. It's one of those games where you can lose over and over, but still enjoy yourself and feel like you're getting better and more efficient with each try. I haven't put much time into Super Monkey Ball, but my initial impressions are good. You move the monkey around by tilting the world, the world is tilted by tilting the controller. Along with the A button making you jump, that sums up the controls of Super Monkey Ball. Controller is held parallel to the floor, and you tilt it whichever way you want the world to tilt. The controls are extremely responsive and precise, and easy for anybody to pick up and play because it's so simple. The levels can get extremely hard though, but the simple controls make it so it's just you vs. the level, and not you vs. the controls AND the level. Anyway, so far, I'm extremely impressed with the Wii. I have no regrets whatsoever for any of the 3 games I bought, which is pretty rare for me because I'm really cheap and try to buy as little as possble. Usually when I spend this much money at one time, I fall into a deep, guilt ridden depression. I haven't really had the chance to do that yet with the Wii, I've just been having too much fun playing it. |
Mine shipped! Should arrive sometime next week (tuesday/wednesday) woo hoo! Time to join the revolution!
|
Woot! Just got mine today from Walmart. It was our second batch, we got 31 and I was 15 in line..... I spent the entire night there. They went on sale at 8 am. but 31 people were in line before 4 am. I'm totally stoked to try this thing out, too bad I have to get to class before I can really try it out. I was able to get it for 20% off due to the fact that I work there and had a special holiday coupon. Out the door with it for $213. No extra games for me yet, Christmas is coming ;)
|
Any word on when new shipments are expected in North America? There are a few conflicting press releases out there. I'm a long time fan boy and I was thinking of picking one up around now or next week.
|
I've heard that walmart is going to get 1 more shipment before christmans, but its a rumor, so it may have no basis in fact
|
Pretty happy with my Wii...having lotsa fun.
My only worry is how dated the graphics will look in a few years..when the system is in the main part of life system cycle. I guess we'll see. |
Its meant more to be a general, family oriented system. Not a hard-core gamer graphics intensive system. Its more about how you play the game than how much detail you can get into a texture or how glossy the side panel of the car looks. I would much rather play an innovative, interactive game that's made of large polygons than play by pushing a few buttons on a game that looks like its real life.
And in the said few years, yet another next gen console will be released by Nintendo, because I definitly don't see them going away anytime soon. |
Arg. I finally got in touch with my Best-Buy connection; he said they are expecting another 20 sometime tomorrow, but still have about 30 spoken for. They have got 20-30 every friday since the 19th, but it looks like this will be the last before the 29th. Damn shame though, this is the only time of the year I expect to have the time to spend. I hope I still want one in 2007.

Besides that, the console is still new, the game developers arn't anywher near getting the most out of the system graphics wise. |
I have one, but it's a Christmas gift for my nephew, so I haven't cracked it open and given it a go.
Not to say that I won't be swinging like a wild-man on Ritalin come Christmas day, but for now...nothing. It's easier around here to grab a PS3 than it was getting my hands on a Wii. I'm within driving distance of about half a dozen Wal*Mart stores. At every story, the Wii shipments have been semi-regular, albeit small. So, they sell out quickly. I had to get up at 5:00 a.m. drive half an hour and wait in line for a couple of hours to get #5 in a shipment of 9 consoles. For shits and giggles I called the same set of stores about a PS3--the good package, not the marginally crippled package. Half of the them have "a couple on the shelf." |
I camped on release day from 2AM to 10AM at Toys R Us. I got one and my brother got one, that way we have one to play and one to eBay. I have Zelda, and am getting Need for Speed for Christmas.

the wife and i showed up at eb games at midnight on launch day. the store clerks had all the packages prepped and we were out the door in less than ten minutes with a system + another wii remote.
we stayed up till 3 fiddling around w/the system and playing wii sports. i woke up at 7 the next morning to get a few games at target when they opened... picked up rayman, zelda, and the new monkey ball. brief synopsis of impressions: rayman - great launch title, already beaten it. easy for friends/family to pick up. one of the funniest videogames i've ever seen. we (the wife and I) had a couple come over last weekend who seldom play videogames. they were giggling like schoolgirls when playing this game. we've been invited to a holiday party over there this weekend and their first request is that we bring 1) a dessert and 2) the wii. monkey ball - decent... the regular level design is still topnotch. the 50 mini-games are a mixed bag (as you'd probably expect). the dev team should have put all their time into polishing the top 10 games rather than spread the wealth over so many. the wii-remote is responsive and seldom even noticed w/the exception of in the (often annoying) boss battles. the new jump play mechanic is awesome, should have been there in all the past titles. zelda - 6 hours in and only in the second dungeon. this game is deep, well thought out and FUN!!! cinematics are uncharacteristically good for a nintendo game. graphics WILL NOT amaze anyone but they get the job done. i think the art direction and pure force of love/imagination poured into this game make up for the last-gen visuals. if you have the system and even slightly enjoy action/adventure games this is a definite buy. i think we played this darn thing for 13 of the first 18 hours we had it (meals and sleep-time included). judging from my nongamer-friends playing it for hours on end, my mom going crazy during a game of wii tennis, and my sisters fighting over the wii-remotes... nintendo has got a big-friggin hit on its hands. |
As we were driving today, I said I just wanted to make a quick stop at Toys'r'us to see if they got the wii shipment that they were rumored to be getting. My lovely wife said we didn't have time. I was understandably confused at this point, as we didn't have anywhere to be. Then she was uncharacteristically assertive and said "I don't want you to buy a nintendo". I was also confused at this point, because a month ago she was telling me I should get one. Then a possible explanation dawned on me, I didn't go into toys'r'us, and perhaps I'll be an excited little boy Christmas morning. Either that, or mighty annoyed.

Sadness. Of all the thousands of wireless routers out there, I have one of the three that doesn't play nicely. Downloads take aaaages, and often just hang.
|
I just finished exams and the office where I work is closed in 5 hours for a week. As I was walking home, I was thinking that I wised I had a Wii, since I have at least 3 full days to kill.
My wonderful wife left me a package on the counter. An early christmas present, apparently she knew I wanted it early. No zelda, but an extra controller. I'm quite excited. |
I HATE MONKEY BALL, YOU SUCK, I HATE YOU, MORE THAN I HATE MARIO SUNSHINE, DAMN YOU TO HELL!.
...needless to say it is getting on my nerves. Wii sports rules with friends though :D It also won't connect to my wireless network, which i'm slightly peeved about, i've tried just about everything. |
What router do you have? If it's a Belkin, you might be out of luck :)
|
Quote:
Aye, it is a belkin, is this a known issue? |
Initially I got the impression that PS3s would be non-existent in stores, and Wiis readily available, especially through the holidays.
Yet, based on my readings at various gaming forums, it seems that the opposite has occured; with PS3s being available, and Wiis being had to find in stores. I've no idea about the validity of such claims, but if true, it's an interesting comment on how a more appealing system was able to overcome and outsell that of a potentially overhyped one. |
Quote:
Here's a list of them, compiled for your convenience. Belkin F5D6231-4 vers. 1000 F5D7230-4 vers. 4000 F5D7231-4 vers. 1102 So, you're SOL, if it's one of those. Either get the USB wifi thingo from Nintendo, or get another router. I have the second one, and have -mixed- success. Downloading is slow but it does go online, most of the time. They have issues with the DS as well. |
yup, i've got the first one, looks like i'll be getting the wi-fi dongle.
Stupid router, cheers for the heads up! |
Alright, I got a call from my local games shop, I can go pick up my Wii at my leisure now :D (which will be next tuesday, oh well...)
|
Just got mine today and I must say I haven't been this excited about or had this much fun with a new gaming systems since SNES. I got Zelda, Red Steel, Elebits, and the Sports package then I ordered a bunch of olds SNES, Genesis, and Turbo games. After I opened it I played Zelda and Red Steel about an hour each then I popped in Sports and couldn't sit it down for over 2 hours! All the different sports are great ('cept bowling). I actually found myself getting a light sweat on with tennis and boxing. Maybe it's just the light exercise pumping some adrenaline into me, but I am just psyched about this thing. Any recommendations for other games? I was thinking about Call of Duty and the other golf game.
|
i got my wii a few days ago, and it's pretty good! i got lucky, though... i figured the only way i was going to find one was to snag one with a jacked up price on ebay, or something. but then, by chance, i ran across a link to one of those wii/ps3 watchers, where amazon just happened to be in stock. :) i only got Zelda and Rayman along with the sports pack-in, but so far it's pretty good. i've downloaded 4 vc games also. my lil bro who's an x360 fan can't stop breathing on it:lol:! not to mention the gamecube games i never played that i picked up for really cheap! yea, this thing's really great. i'm not an early adopter, but after demoing a wii in gamestop a little while ago, i just couldn't pass it up.
edit: btw, if anyone wants to exchange miis/wii codes(i seriously hate the use of these friend codes, but whatever:| ), i'm always open: name: Casea code: 7657 6340 0699 4448 |
