Sore loser? Its an inanimate object idiot >:-(

I’ve been a gamer since the Atari 2600. On through Commodore 64, and then it was Apple IIe. Now I use PC and Xbox. I can say I enjoy them and like everyone else the reason is their fun; right? Now and then I play a game that really pisses me off. When I play physical games with friends, I’m a good loser. When I lose a certain games it infuriates me. I start thinking the computer is cheating- I know that is dumb.
Lately I’ve been playing Midnight DUB for Xbox and have had a revelation, it’s probably time I put games down for awhile.
It seems when I play it’s almost like an obsession. Not because I spend allot of time playing, but because I know I’m going to end up getting pissed, and end up walking away frustrated. That’s not true enjoyment, but yet I feel like I’m pulled into having to play it.

Anyway I wanted to know if there was anyone out there that has had similar emotions over a game or games in general. Have you ever got so pissed you broke your system or joystick, or whatever?

I tend to get angry over glitches, as far as beinbg angry at the machine. Otherwise, it is the other players that can get me mad. When I play StarCraft and I get BSed time after time after time, it can get really old. There are rules, and you agreed to abide by them. If you BS me, and I destroy you, go home and practice. Don't try to hack my account.

Learn from your own failures, but rage at bugs or malfunctioning controllers.

Not generally - I find it incredibly annoying and unattractive when people I know get physically angry at the other players. I channel my anger into something even more dangerous - determination. Rather than get pissed when I lose a fight in Soul Calibur III for the 75th time, I turn it into unhealthy determination. I'll play until my fingers bleed, until I can't keep my eyes open, until I beat the motherfucker. I'll learn all the moves and practice them ad infinitum until I can absolutely slaughter them. I've never met a virtual opponent that I didn't think I could best if I put enough time in.

The only difference is the manifestation - it's an internal anger for not being good enough, not practicing hard enough, not focusing well enough - rather than an external anger for them being better than I am.

The only time I get pissed is when the other person stops playing - when I don't get a chance to have a comeback. When they slaughter me 10 times in a row and then just .. quit.

So - I funnel it a different place, but yes - I experience the same draw you do.

When I'm playing Counter Strike (yep, still) and I'm only carrying a pistol, and I'm in the process of killing an enemy, and by misfortune I step on a primary weapon and pick it up...thereby allowing my opponent to unload his shotgun in me..I'll admit. I bang on my desk cometimes. But nothing extreme.

When I was a kid, though, I was a sneaky bastard. I'd unplug my opponent's controller just as he was about to win, and then kick his ass.

I've broken 3 gamecube controllers and 2 wavebirds thanks to mario tennis GC. Dear god that game can fuck me off when playing doubles...

On my 64 i just used to throw the catridge around the room, those were indestructable, but you can't do that with a poxy disk.

Mario Kart used to send my into a rage when doing the final cup with Rainbow Road in it (whatever it was called). The game used to cheat which is what used to make me really angry (little or no coins and Bowser and Donkey Kong would constantly hit you making you spin out, that or near infinite stars for the cpu). Never broke any controllers or anything though I'd just switch off the console and come back to it a few hours later.

slows you down at first but afterwards it becomes an automatic reaction to switch when you're not currently engaged in a fire fight. Counter-strike really did get me frustrated sometimes when playing with my team. Either at myself, occaisonly my team and the opponents when playing online when I suspected them of cheating. Verbal outbursts of anger were rarer though.

Overall I enjoyed the game though.

Yea, come to think of it - I've definitely gotten in a screaming rage at Counter-Strike and Battlefield 2 - for lame things. Like dropping artillery and vehicles on me every time I spawn, or killing me with a sniper rifle before I even leave my uncappable base.

In Counter-Strike, it's those motherfuckers who block Aztec doors or dust tunnels. I've never wanted to kill my own teammates more than right then. Usually for me, though.. FF is on, so I do. :)

I don't know that I've ever gotten pissed with the game itself. Although I do get pissed when I get disconnected from Guild Wars after having spent over half an hour fighting through an area or a mission. Or when bastards spawn camp in multiplayer fps. That really pisses me off, mainly because it takes a lot of enjoyment out of the game. You die, respawn and are immediatly killed before you can even take a step forward.... yeah, lots of fun there.

I've had that happen to me in Halo 2 with modders. I've broken 1 PS2 controller and also broken Madden 06 for Xbox. Don't know why but I had the worst luck possible with Madden 06 (or I just suck), but I seem to do a bit better with 07 on X360. I don't play 07 nearly as much as I played 06 online though.

I've played football games where the computer's defense always knew the right play to call. I would even intentionally call inappropriate plays on offense (like running plays on 3rd down and 15 - 20 yards or "Hail Mary" passes on 2nd down and less than a yard to go) just to see if the computer would pick the right defense, and it usually did. It feels weird to accuse games of cheating, but they seemed to make the right calls way too often to be random luck.

I don't see any point in breaking stuff, since that only hurts myself financially in the long run. But I've had a number of games over the years that I simply refused to play because I believed I wasn't get a fair chance. These are the games that I sell to stores that buy back used stuff.

Toaster126 10-22-2006 11:20 PM

A lot of games are specifically programmed to cheat. Upping the difficulty on things might make the computer smarter or whatever, but it might make the game easier in some way for it as well.

I don't rage against objects. If I get frustrated, I either get better, or take a break. *shrug*

Bloody Roar and just about any Capcom fighting game can get me pissed pretty good. I just hate the fighting games where it desides that no mater what you do, you aren't going to win that fight. My computer pisses me off some times when it lags hard when I am fighting someone in a game to. Normaly when my virus scanner or Windons starts doing an auto update. Computer just starts putting along at a realy slow speed when that happens while I have a game going.
