Most Overrated Games

I'd have to go with these 3 games (They're all pretty good games, it's just that the noted issues I had really put me off):

Metroid Prime - Too much backtracking, really dull, lifeless world, and a real lack of innovation.

Ninja Gaiden - Too much trial and error gameplay, a broken save system (saving anywhere should be an option), and derivative gameplay.

Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind - Bland world, broken combat system, and too much reading.

Willravel 09-17-2006 10:15 AM

FF....all of them. Don't kill me. I don't care for the storylines or the voice acting.

Slavakion 09-17-2006 10:50 AM

Halo. It's slow, clunky with joysticks (I'm a mouse/keyboard person when it comes to FPS games) and not that original as far as gameplay goes. I can get the same experience except with a faster pace and mouse/keyboard with the original Unreal Tournament.

longbough 09-17-2006 11:39 AM

Freedom Fighters - I got it because every single review raved over it. Sure, it was fun but it wasn't a "must play" game. Graphics were acceptable, controls were pretty basic and the game was much too short. Only noteable for not having any glaring faults. I played it on a PC - maybe it was just meant to be a console game.

Quake 4 - nice graphics. Boring weapons and mechanics.

Halo 2 - I can't explain why this doesn't do much for me. Maybe it's because the ideas aren't novel anymore. I donno. Maybe I just expected too much.

djflish 09-17-2006 11:56 AM

GTA: San Andreas & Doom 3
GTA:SA was completely unoriginal and every level of Doom 3 was exactly the same. Walk down dark corridor, into dark room, find pda for locked door, open door, walk down dark corridor, into dark room, etc, etc.

Plaid13 09-17-2006 03:13 PM

doom3 quake4 world of warcraft.

Doom3 its just dark and annoying 99% of the time. nothing special about it at all.

Quake4 just didnt do anything great or impressive.

WoW.... its just another everquest dark age of camelot copy nothing new or orginal nothing ground breaking no extra fluff or depth to it.

Personaly im really sick of the standards of quality game companys are sticking to. Like trying something new and orginal would be a bad thing. While fps games dont have much they can do to improve other then graphics and AI, the rpg and mmorpg can do a ton to improve and they just dont. MMORPGs are the most basic dull boring rpgs possable. they take a decent rpg and strip it down to almost nothing to make it work as a multiplayer game. Quests go from the most enjoyable parts of the game to more of a chore then anything. Yet they have all these players and dont give them any role playing tools to take advantage of it. you dont see mmorpgs with a pub where you can gather with other players to play a minigame or something else. They all revolve around going out killing a bunch of random monsters leveling up then mindlessly killing other players. They are just really lacking any real depth that i really think players should be expecting by now. but... game companys are in it for the money after all and people still buy and pay to play pure crap games so they have no reason to take the next step and produce the better games. ok just my little rant.

Siege 09-17-2006 06:43 PM

While I wouldn't say all of them, a lot of the FF's are way more popular than they really should be.

Ch'i 09-17-2006 06:54 PM

Doom 3, Halo 2, most FF, Mortal Kombat (newer ones), DOA.

MexicanOnABike 09-17-2006 07:18 PM

warcraft 3. i played for 1 hr and said: wow. this sucks ballz.

Halo. i saw it. i played it and i never touched it since that 1st time. why is it any diffrent than the million of FPS around? oh its on the xbox? fuck that. theres no mouse/keyboard.

Lasereth 09-17-2006 08:08 PM

N64 - Goldeneye. Everybody raved about the "revolutionary multiplayer" in this game, but I was playing Quake1 deathmatch/teamfortress at the time, and it completely blew away the clunky, slow split-screen multiplayer that Goldeneye posessed. The only real fun I had playing that game was sniping people from really far away in the snow level.

PC - Diablo 2. Click click click click click click click click click click click click click click. Click click click click. Click click click click. In conclusion, click.

PC - Everquest. So incredibly slow paced and boring. I haven't played in years, but what made me quit the game was losing all of your stuff on your corpse when you die. And if you can't get to your corpse (I mean, it's in the place you DIED, after all), you have to get a friendly high level to help you get it. And it seemed like 99% of the time, friendly high levels did not exist. So tough titties, all of your equipment is stuck on the other side of the world in a dark forest, where you can't see anything, and every monster around pretty much one-shots you. /unsubscribe

The Nintendo 64 console in general. Man, what a lame piece of crap. There were like, four good games on it. On the bright side, if I ever need an extra blanket, I can just pull the layer of dust off of my N64 and wrap myself up in it. Who said N64 was completely useless?

hulk 09-18-2006 06:25 AM

I'd agree about Diablo, Halo 2 and Everquest, though the rest of you are nuts! Games that everyone knows sucks, like Quake 4, don't count :)

what voice acting? the old ones dont have it!

But, back on topic, Halo (both) and Doom3. Talk about boring.

Crack 09-19-2006 11:39 AM

Mariokart (or is it just cart?) I hate racing sims to begin with, but if I wanted to see Mario and the Princess and Yoshi drive tiny little cartoon cars around a boring track, I'd find some acid and hook up the SuperNES and play Super Mario World. (imo)

Oh, man - that's funny. And I couldn't agree more.

One other game that everyone seemed to absolutely loved that was rated incredibly high was "Jet Set Radio Future" - I just never really got it. The gameplay was incredibly uncomplicated - there was one button for all tricks, if I remember correctly - and there really wasn't anything that did it for me...

hulk 09-21-2006 08:30 AM

You know, you can just hold the mouse button in Diablo ;)

That said, I was coerced into going through the whole thing over the network at home. On each difficulty. Ugh, what a drag.

wolf 09-21-2006 01:42 PM

Halo2 - it was pretty much the same as halo 1, except for the dual hold weapon. The game was short as hell to. By the time you really started to get into it, it was over.

Doom3 - Way overrated, like the other poster said, walk down hall, get surprised by nasty thing, get pda, open door.... etc...

GTA San Andreas- It was good, I liked it, but comeon, the timed missions are a joke. The point of a mission should be to have the skill to get it done, not how well you can dodge traffic and if you can't then you have to start over. It's crap.

feelgood 09-21-2006 02:31 PM

Halo 2, Halo 3 - (I included Halo 3 because everybody knows its just a continuation of Halo 2 that's made for XBox 360)

Doom 3 - To sum it up:

Step 1: Enter dark room
Step 2: Noise appears
Step 3: Demon appears
Step 4: Blow the bejesus outta the demon
Step 5: Enter next room and repeat step 1

After the first few rooms, I got the hang of whats gonna happen in the next room...

Enter the Matrix - Ain't gonna into it

Starfleet Command - Since the original was released, all of the sequels was just a remake of the original one, except with more ships and mission

Coppertop 09-24-2006 02:36 PM

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter

I think this series blew its proverbial load on the first title. Pity. Having the mission fail if the squadleader dies is simply unacceptable, especially in multiplayer. And don't even get me started on the consolerific UI. Ugh.

longbough 02-18-2007 10:33 AM

All the GTAs, Saint's Row etc. - Poor graphics and boring. I never got that "immersive" sense that people rave about.

All the Myst games. I tried to like them but they're boring. The puzzles don't require you to think - It's more like advanced "Where's Waldo." It's like a RPG without people to communicate with or a FPS without living things to kill.

gotekix 02-18-2007 11:32 AM

Saints Row was hyped up so much and turned out to be utter shit if you ask me.

WoW is good but people put it on a pedastal when there are plenty of great MMORPGs out there that don't require monthly payments.

I agree with what was stated about Diablo 2. Boring click click click click...

I disagree however with what was stated about Golden Eye 64. The game was great then and still is to this day. The game had its shortcomings (ie: no jump, glitches-galore) but it what it lacked it madeup for in gameplay/funfactor.

I don't know of any good MMO's that don't require monthly payments. Please enlighten me. I've been really bored and poor.

Carno 02-19-2007 09:09 AM

The only one that I have ever heard of is Guild Wars.

I agree with Freedom Fighters being overrated. Like longbough said, all the reviews for it were awesome, but the game itself was lame. I found the multiplayer to be pretty much unplayable.

ironpham 02-19-2007 11:48 AM

I hate Guild Wars. I've seen it and played it for a very short time on my friend's computer. I found it unbearable.

As for overrated games, I'd go with any Mortal Kombat game except the first. While the "Fatality" and the blood were cool at first(especially since I was a little kid at the time), its concept got dulled out and boring in later games. All it is now is the same game over and over with a couple of new characters. And the controls suck.

I used to play Guild Wars quite a bit. In fact the timer says I've spent over 1200 hours on it. The original chapter was amazing, but the sequels have really turned me off to the pve aspect of the game. The second two chapter are about 95% repeat of the original game, with many skill repeated with different names. The PvP part of GW's rocks though.

LoganSnake 02-20-2007 09:12 PM

Final Fantasy VII. Borefest. No game in history has gotten as much undeserved praise as that game has.

Guild Wars - Already mentioned

Anarchy Online - A little long in the tooth (released 5 years ago) but still has a small but strong fanbase. The learning curve can be a bit steep for a new player.

Archlord - Just released a few months ago and panned by critics and players alike. So much so that they eliminated the monthly fee to attract new players and plan on generating revenue through other sources. I have not played it personally so can't comment on how good or bad it is but from what I've read it has improved since launch and may be worth checking out.

tinfoil 02-21-2007 07:56 AM

Doom3 -- How could a game that looked so damned pretty be so damned bad? Ugh. I had to force myself to finish it.

Lasereth 02-21-2007 02:55 PM

Doom 3 didn't get that great of reviews so I wouldn't really call it overrated.

longbough 02-21-2007 09:50 PM

I actually liked Doom 3 on the PC just for the plotless scare factor. Of course I had to play with the mod that put a flashlight on your firearms - otherwise it would have been entirely unplayable.

The Doom 3 expansion was a flop, though. All noise and explosions ... I preferred the suspense of the former.

politicophile 02-22-2007 09:44 PM

Most of the games on the above lists deserve to be there, but I have to take exception to Goldeneye. In my entire gaming life, I have never had as much fun as I did playing multiplayer Goldeneye... not to mention trying to beat Facility fast enought to get the invincibility cheat.

My contributions:
Mario III: A good game, but not the Holy Grail of NES that some people make it out to be.

Project Gotham Racing: The whole series, actually. I love racing sims, but these games put me to sleep. I have no idea why they keep making new versions: just buy the Gran Turismo franchise and save yourself the trouble.

Space Invaders: Terrible game. Vastly inferior to contemporaries like Pong and PacMan.

3leggedfrog 02-23-2007 12:57 AM

there are so many worst games but for me the top 2 have to be BattleField 2 specialforces and the other xpack to bf2. some nice weps but the maps sucked. the orginal BF2 rocked but all the xpack after suck hard.

the third worst has to be guild wars. get to max level on the noob island what kind of crap is that? great graphics great background but i cant get over maxing my character on the noob island. about 6 hours to max my character on the noob island then 5 weeks to beat the game. what kind of crap is that. (granted i am a slow gamer but still.)

Halx 02-23-2007 12:34 PM

I think Oblivion is overrated. I am SO bored.

True, but it was a very highly anticipated game. Perhaps overrated isn't the right word, but it was certainly a big disappointment.

Lasereth 02-23-2007 04:36 PM

Yeah I would definitely agree. I just hate it when people use the word overrated incorrectly.

I could not agree less!

The whole Jet Set Radio series is supposed to be simple. It's because it's a fast paced game, as if you were really hitting the streets and tagging up turf.

That being said, I have to agree with all the people talking about Halo, FPS, RPGs, MMORPGs. I just really don't like Fantasy games. It's gotta have some realism.

longbough 02-27-2007 10:57 PM

Resistance Fall of Man ... you heard me. I got my PS3 today and fired up the game for the first 15 minutes or so. And so far I'm underwhelmed. The last FPS games I've played are Gears of War and Lost Planet - and both of them looked better and had more instinctive controls: GoW for the ability to take cover effectively and Lost Planet for the quick 90 degree turning. RFM's controls are just the basic look and run ... nothing innovative. Even Half Life 2 on the PC had more impressive aliens, environmental design, etc.

I'm hoping the game gets better. I have no idea what the big deal is about. Both Lost Planet and GoW had settings and bosses that made your jaw drop. RFM just looks and plays like Call of Duty...

*update*- I've been playing the game now for a couple of days. It's getting better. Now it looks more like Half-Life 2 but plays like most other FPS games. The game is fun and the controls are simple. Weapon choices are interesting. But still, I don't have any "oh-shit-I-can't-believe-what-I'm-seeing" moments like I had with Gears of War and Lost Planet.
