What's your favorite video game intro?
Vagrant Story, Onimusha 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Kingdom Hearts...and all the Silent Hill intros, Silent Hill 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Oh, and Wild ARMs and Tales of Destiny. I loved those intros so much! I watched them over and over... |

Freelancer. Explains the backplot needed, and the end of the monologue is powerful.

World of Warcraft has an incredibly good opening cinematic. The first Metal Gear Solid had possibly the best intro ever as well...I actually have the MP3 of the opening theme. Simple amazing. Final Fantasy 7 had a great intro. There's others but I can't remember them at the moment.

When you speak of the intro to MGS2, do you mean the entire first chapter? Like, play as Snake?
I remember first loading up that game. The intro was epic. The dive down to the tanker. Sigh. Then the confusion of Raiden, and wondering when I would get to play as Snake again, figuring Raiden was a minor detour from the Solid Snake fun...

Battlefield 2 - it's not overly cinematic and it uses almost 100% ingame footage. And yet, it looks so real and warfieldish. They've got just enough action.. tank rolling in and getting rocketed, helicopter using TV guided missile on turret, jeep jumping the wall with guns blazing.. jets flying overhead, and the artillery finale.
And it pumps me up to play, because I can do exactly what happened in the movie and it looks just like it. I love it when game graphics are so good they can do their intro cinematic with it.

Katamari Damacy - without a doubt, the strangest, weirdest, and most intriguing intro ever made. Just imagine dancing giraffes, rainbows, bicycles, etc. The perfect intro for a game where you roll a ball around to collect objects from the earth.

For me (and certainly back when they came out), Syndicate (1993) and Independence War (1997) had introductions which were my favorite. My preference is the latter, since for a good long while a 14 minute introduction for a game (even with poor resolution) was extremely rare.

I was a huge Ultima fan from about Ultima 6 onwards ('til 9...blecchhh!). Every Ultima intro around that time would give you an impetus to return to Britannia, from your comfy apartment on Earth. As crappy as the graphics were back then, you really felt a part of the game universe. Call me nostalgic but those were great intros.
Day of The Tentacle had a pretty unforgettable intro as well.
