TFP Chess Club
I love chess and I hope there are a number of you out there who do as well. I know there was a thread about a tournament, but I'm talking about something a little more practical and friendly here. I'm not concerned much about winning and losing, just finding some people who would like to play on a regular basis.
My hope is to have chess games played through PM's similar to the through the mail games that can take years to play. I wouldn't even be opposed to playing multiple games at once. I think with pm's we could keep it to about a move a day, maybe more. Then at the conclusion of the game we could come back here and post the move list so everyone can analyze, give their thoughts, heck maybe even learn something. Any takers? |
Man, a move a day is hardcore.
And I don't think I could keep up with a purely text based game. While I wouldn't mind playing, you're going to get crazy ass moves from me like Z20 to AA13 or something :) Give me a board and I can play  |
Well, it's not unusual for someone playing by mail (or PM) to have a board set up somewhere. When you get the other person's move, you actually move the corresponding piece on the board sitting at your desk or whatever.
|
Or if you don't want to literally have a board cluttering up your house, you could download a chess interface for your computer that you could play games on so that you can save them and come back. Armageddon is one, or if you prefer a 3D board there is one from Earth Gaming
I just meant the move a day as an example, more than anything. It is something I would be able to keep up with, but not necesary. I'm up for anything, I'm just happy to be playing. |
I would be too tempted to cheat by doing this.
"ah-ha, he's moved his rook to attack my bishop, lets get out my 50,000 page encyclopedia chessica" |

/Still waiting for a game PM me. Until then I have a problem for you all courtesy of Chessmaster 7000. I'll be back with a solution later on this week. White to move. Mate in 4. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e/Problem1.jpg If you take a guess, I kindly request that you use the spoiler tags so you don't ruin it for anyone else. |
i'll do it
but i am not sure i can live up to a move a day. maybe every two or three days

Solution!
I don't even know if anyone looked at it, but... Spoiler: Ok, so the correct move is 1.Qa6. I know, your thinking thats crazy but hang with me for a second. It's crazy because it looks like it should be followed immediately by Kxa6, however this would be a mistake by black because Kxa6 allows 2.Kc6 and now black has no way to stop 3.b4 4.b5 mate. After 1.Qa6 black has another option Kb4 white follows with 2.Qd3 this limits blacks king to one available move Ka4 but this is followed by 3.Qc4 mate. Black has has to move the knight, even with the check however white follows with 3.Kc6 and black has no way to stop 4.Qb5 mate |
I used to play a lot of chess over the web at www.atlanticgames.net
If anyone wants to play, sign up there, I think its free, and let me know. |
Does anyone know of a good chess tutorial? I am excellent at stratigy, but I've never really played much chess. Should I take lessons? Is there a decent program (for Mac) out there? Much thanks for any help, and this is a great idea for a thread.

So, anyone up for a game yet?
|
You can do it without losing the Queen
Q c6 (check) - K a6 B c5 (check) - K a5 Q b6 (check) - K a4 Q b4 (checkmate) Q protected by B on c5 easiest and least complicated mate. I don't know how to do spoiler tags........ I appologize. |

Spoiler: 1. Qc6 Doesn't guarantee mate, black can respond 1. ... Kb4 and the forced mate in 4 is lost |
