A funny guy I worked with one summer was Angel, a Puerto Rican guy. He used to roll up the morning newspaper and then tie a string to one end, then shove it down his pants with the string hanging out. Then he'd go hang around the women and pull the sting to make it move. They giggled a lot and I think half of them thought he was extremely well endowed.

I believe the count to now be 1462.
Some things about that year: 1462 (MCDLXII) was a common year starting on Friday. Some Events of 1462 Settlers from Portugal begin to settle the Cape Verde islands. June 17 – Vlad III Dracula attempts to assassinate Mehmed II in The Night Attack, forcing Mehmed to retreat from Wallachia. |

Zook,
are you monitor lizard hunting with a pair of pliers, or are you a lizard dentist? |
It's a walking snake.
|
monitor lizards can be pretty nasty. At one local pet shop they usually have a bunch of reptiles, lizards, snakes of all sorts and I've been there when a big biker dude and his girlfriend purchased a pet mouse and asked that it be dropped into the large tank holding two monitors. Before the mouse hit the deck both monitors were clamped on it and proceeded to pull and fight until they tore the poor mouse in half...hickory dickory dock
|
One of my roommates in college had a 2 1/2' Savanah monitor that he kept in a 75 gallon tank. (He also had a cobra, 3 rattlesnakes, 2 hedgehogs, and some malaysian hissing cockroaches.) He'd feed the damn thing stunned guinea pigs. Damned thing got out of it's tank one morning while I was taking a shower after being awake all night (and seeing things that weren't necessarily there.) Nothing like herding 2 and a half feet of nasty lizard back into its tank, naked and dripping, using a towel as a weapon.

Top, you're lucky that thing didn't go after your dangly thingy....say no more.

Another great benefit of TFP...thanks, Hal |
I'm awfully glad he didn't go after my dangly thing either. He was being whipped with a towel at the time, though, so I suspect the snake avoidance procedures in the reptile brain took over.

sleep is for the tired, im not tired yet
|
I was, but now I'm not.
|
me too, odd how sleep takes care of that
|
as always.
|
I didn't sleep. I had wild passionate sex all night, got half hour of rest, and off to work.
Spoiler: only part of that is true |
another day, another dollar...I'm in work now, looking forward to lunch.
|
if you didn't sleep, then you didn't get any rest, if you didn't rest, then you didn't have energy to go to work so i concluded that the sex all night was true, but since your next post said you did go to work, then i can only assume that you work a night shift which would mean that you didn't sleep since you were at work and you didn't get much rest BECAUSE you had to work nights and you did go off to work. So unless you work as a porn star, then that IS the lie.
|
you might be right, but then, you could be wrong... nah, you're right
|
OK, I actually slept for 3 hours. And I am not a porn star, nor would I like to be. But I did eat lunch.

Question: can anybody help jog my memory about a film; a short story within the film that depicts a terminally-ill young woman, and the distraught fiance who tries to tell her to hold on? She goes onto say "that once the last leaf on that tree falls, (outside of her bedroom window) I will be gone". The fiance refuses to accept this dim reality, so after a short scene, he decides upon his idea to paint the tree as an exact replica on the side of the adjacent white house, with one last leaf still on its branches. He is pleased with himself after so much effort to liven up the spirits of his lover, but when he looks over at the window when he is finished, his fiance does not respond. I'm not sure if he falls down into a fade to black pit of darkness, but this is what I'm imagining.
The films that it reminds me of (and I think the story could be found within) are: James and the Giant Peach, Requiem for a Dream, and The Ring. I doubt it is either of those films, but just giving you a gist. I'm also not ruling out that this may be a Hayao Miyazaki feature. Do you happen to know of the feature-length film in which I am describing (however tenuously)? |
It tickles a memory, it does.
All these memories seem to push their way to the front of the chow line. I need a memory tamer. |
no clue but it sounds fun.
|
well I just spent an hour googling and reading, and I have had no luck with a name for your movie...
someone else have a crack..... . |
I have a crack or two...and I recall that story line, but can't think of it at the moment...will dwell on it.
---------- Post added at 11:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 AM ---------- "...I imagine you're thinking of one segment from the 1952 omnibus film O. Henry's Full House. It dramatizes five stories by O. Henry, the master of the twist ending, the third of which is "The Last Leaf." It's about two Manhattan sisters, the younger of whom (Anne Baxter), gets pneumonia during a blizzard. Feverish, she becomes convinced that her life is bound up with that of the dried-out tree whose leaves are dropping rapidly..." |

More elegant ways were no doubt available disregarding means. |

*looks up on IMDB quickly*
Attachment 20888 The Last Leaf (1983) An Easter Parable: As lingering pneumonia takes her will to live, a young girl decides that she will die when the last leaf drops from a dying vine outside her window. Her neighbor, an elderly artist frustrated by his inability to paint what is in his heart, follows the example of the Savior and makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her life. In doing so, he creates the masterpiece he has been struggling to paint. yeah, it's the same story (basically) in which I described, but this is 24 min. long, and the scene I'm looking for must have been abridged, as I don't recall it be longer than 6 min. We might be looking for a film with Christian undertones. |
Oh, yeah before I forget: extra post.
Enjoy a mellow feel. (the first album I've listened to released in '09, well, it has a remix of Chopin's Etude op.10 no.3, and I feel good. Perhaps I should've linked the relevant artists, instead of Satie.) |
|
Thanks everybody. my last thought in my original query (that it may be an anime) turned out to be true.
Here's the scene in question: Until "The Last Leaf" has fallen; that should come in a few days or so now. P.S. This is the abridged story of the "great sacrifice": In the original story, they were girls, not a boy and girl.. They were artists, actually.. One of them was suffering from pneumonia.. When this sick girl was losing her will to live, her friend approached their neighbor, also a great painter, (they're living in an apartment) to ask for some help.. Then as the leaves on the vines fell one by one, the sick girl continuously said that if the last leaf on the vine would fall, she'll die.. So one night, after the last leaf had fallen, their neighbor painted a leaf on the broad side of the house.. taking painstaking hours to complete the painting in the dead of the night. The next few days, the sick girl, seeing the "leaf" still hanging from the vine from her window, realized that she was not meant to die and chose to continue living.. They later learned that their neighbor died of pneumonia.. The neighbor (a troubled artist himself) got it when he was painting (it was snowing heavily) his greatest masterpiece, the last leaf.. |
O'Henry is one of the great classic American writers and was required reading in high school, though I enjoyed his writing so I looked forward to reading it. O. Henry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Legacy The O. Henry Award is a prestigious annual prize given to outstanding short stories, and named after Porter. Several schools around the country bear Porter's pseudonym. In 1952, a film featuring five stories, called O. Henry's Full House, was made. The episode garnering the most critical acclaim[citation needed] was "The Cop and the Anthem", starring Charles Laughton and Marilyn Monroe. The other stories are "The Clarion Call", "The Last Leaf", "The Ransom of Red Chief" (starring Fred Allen and Oscar Levant), and "The Gift of the Magi". 1426 so we're continuing to close in |
until the last leaf falls...

I want to break free..... I want to.....

And we will commerate this last page of 'O.Henry' dedication with the seasonal wrapping and topical story of dedication: The Gift of the Magi
