You people were getting warmer. Now you're getting colder!

Let me help you with another of my slot machine wins taken from a different casino.

http://www.milnoc.com/images/SSPX0014.jpg

Ignore the symbols and the denomination. Look at everything else, and compare it with the original picture. There's a subtle yet significant difference which will help you narrow down the location of the first image.

Sticky 03-27-2008 12:27 PM

Casino de Montreal becuase French is listed first?

(actually that does not meet the language requirements - the English must be half the size or less than the French)

Milnoc 03-27-2008 02:07 PM

THAT'S IT! The WHY is that the French language is listed first! And you're right, it's the Montreal Casino. As for not meeting the language requirements, you're right about that too. But since the Casino is run by the provincial government... :)

The other picture is from the Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa.

Charlatan 03-27-2008 05:30 PM

I figured it might have something to do the the French... I just don't know where the Casinos are and that big jackpot was in the news.

Sticky 03-28-2008 08:44 AM

OK, this may be hard from this specific vantage point.
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/3355/example5fs0.jpg

The hint is that the rest of the building does not look like this. This section (or facade) has been preserved from a 9th century building. Extra points for the name of the 19th century building as well.

Leto 03-28-2008 10:26 AM

Is this an arena now?

Sticky 03-28-2008 10:42 AM

Yes it is an arena now.

Milnoc 03-28-2008 05:56 PM

I'm still looking for landmarks that'll help identify the city...

Leto 03-28-2008 06:50 PM

i get this 'Ontario' feel looking at the pic. white licence plates.... older style archecture on the facade.

Milnoc 03-28-2008 08:34 PM

Possible about it being Ontario. The license plate of the green car is definitely white, and using the resolution enhancement in my paint program reveals a hint of red in the plate, indicating red lettering. The street board on the right appears to say "Halloween" on the second line. The rest of the board appears unreadable. So we MIGHT have narrowed it down to Ontario, assuming the Ontario car isn't from outside the arena's province.

Just a thought. What if it was a curling rink and not a hockey rink? Have any curling rinks ever been built to that size?

Charlatan 03-28-2008 09:59 PM

John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario.

The building you are seeing is The Talbot Inn

Sticky 03-30-2008 05:51 PM

Charlatan is right.
Nice one.

Here is another view:
http://www.infrastructure.gc.ca/mc-c...n-Labatt_b.jpg

Charlatan 03-30-2008 07:00 PM

OK... this could be hard for some.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/StevenMurphy001/TFP/photo?authkey=rg-0rAySR3s#5183735158154317026"><img src="http://lh3.google.co.uk/StevenMurphy001/R_BTqWd9zOI/AAAAAAAAClY/4t_cObwFFao/s800/2371539203_6d4bae48f5_o.jpg" /></a>

blahblah454 03-30-2008 09:02 PM

Holy crap Charlatan! Thats a doozy!

silent_jay 03-30-2008 09:33 PM

hard on the eyes when you're buzzed that's for sure.

Fly 03-30-2008 09:54 PM

whoa.........no doubt jay.

Leto 03-31-2008 03:05 AM

That's the Time Tunnel!

Ha, well it sure looks like it doesn't it?

Could it be in the Ontario Science Centre?

Milnoc 03-31-2008 06:04 AM

Looks more like the entrance to a "swinging seventies" style club or thrift shop...

[Insert Austin Powers catchphrase here]

Leto 03-31-2008 07:50 AM

The Edge nightclub?

Charlatan 03-31-2008 04:41 PM

None of the above. I will post a clue later, if nobody gets close.

Charlatan 04-01-2008 04:28 PM

Here is a hint.

http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../guessblur.jpg

Leto 04-01-2008 07:21 PM

Could you be more specific?

blahblah454 04-01-2008 07:24 PM

That looks like it could be a comic shop or something, perhaps a movie store or a props store. something to do with entertainment.

I think that writing on the front of the store is a hint... kto?o.... cant really read it

Leto 04-02-2008 05:35 AM

what store? All I see is stairs in a b&w spiral paint job. If Charlatan's hint is a picture, the post link isn't working.

Milnoc 04-02-2008 09:53 AM

I can't see the hint either. What format is it in?

Charlatan 04-02-2008 04:59 PM

Crap... not sure why the link isn't working.

Here are another couple of shots of the location:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3147/...4ed144.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3239/...5954c4.jpg?v=0

Charlatan 04-03-2008 04:46 PM

It's in Toronto and it's in a "cool" area of town.

If nobody gets this, please get someone else to post an image. I am going to be out of town for the next 10 days and will have limited access to the Internet.

I guess this one *was* a bit too tough.

blahblah454 04-03-2008 05:27 PM

Ive tried playing with the pictures, I tried googling everthing I could think of, I got nothing.

Leto 04-04-2008 03:27 AM

I've got one more kick at it, before I give up. give me a couple or 3 hours.

Charlatan 04-04-2008 05:34 AM

I'm rooting for you Leto...

One more hint... this store has been in this location since the 80s and now also has a shop across the road in a much bigger space. The store across the road is a basement location, below a very cool bookstore (I bet Baraka_Guru has been in this bookstore at least once).

Sticky 04-04-2008 06:50 AM

Queen Street West inbetween Beverly and John streets

Leto 04-04-2008 11:54 AM

Got it! This is the Black Market Vintage Clothing Store at Queen & John in Toronto

319 Queen Street West.

Must have driven past here a hundred times, funny, the place just doesn't stand out. They need to do something with their decor I guess.

http://www.blackmarkettoronto.com/contact/contact.php

I guess the book store that Charlatan was referring to was Bakka, on the north side of Queen. It's gone now, moved down further to West Queen West, and is called Bakka Phoenix.

The building beside where Bakka was used to be the exterior that was the Lawyer's office in that wonderful '80's CBC offering of Street Legal, which for some reason is now broadcast on Bravo at around 7 AM weekdays.

Since Charl is gone, I'll find a pic and post....

Leto 04-04-2008 07:18 PM

here's one:

Sticky 04-07-2008 06:44 AM

Kits (Kitsilano) Beach Vancouver

Leto 04-07-2008 06:48 AM

Damn you're good.

(well, it's the pool beside the beach)

game on Sticky.

Sticky 04-07-2008 08:30 AM

I was originally thinking that they would only build something big like that in TO but it just did not look like TO.

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/5827/example3mc7.jpg

Leto 04-07-2008 10:21 AM

I wish they would build one like that in TO. But there are big ones at Sunnyside (Western Beaches) & Woodbine Beach (The Beaches). Nothing at all on the scale of Kits though.

They look like F1 cars. Is that circuit Gilles Villeneuve?

Sticky 04-08-2008 04:40 AM

No, it is not circuit Gilles Villeneuve

silent_jay 04-08-2008 07:48 AM

Calabogie MotorSports Park?

Sticky 04-08-2008 08:02 AM

Nope, that is incorrect as well.

Leto 04-08-2008 12:02 PM

Mosport? although the height of thehills behind seem to indcate that it may be out west

Sticky 04-08-2008 12:53 PM

It is not mosport.

Circuit Mont-Tremblant?

If it is, someone else please post a picture. I'm out of picts for now, and I have a big video editing job to complete before Friday.

blahblah454 04-08-2008 05:46 PM

Judging by the scenery I would have to say its in BC? Possibly near Vancouver?

Sticky 04-09-2008 05:18 AM

Milnoc is correct.
it is the racetrack up at Mont Tremblant in Quebec (north of Montreal).

blahblah454, do you want to post a pic, Milnoc can't.

Leto 04-10-2008 07:08 PM

ok, i'll do it.

Part of the underside of bridges series:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...0/bridge-1.jpg

james t kirk 04-13-2008 04:12 PM

Champlain Bridge in Montreal?

Leto 04-13-2008 04:37 PM

No, this is not in Montreal.

Sticky 04-14-2008 08:37 AM

James T, I am surprised at that guess from the bridge expert. :)

How about?
Pattullo Bridge, New Westminster-Surrey BC

Leto 04-14-2008 10:41 AM

Oh yes, Game on Sticky.

(One of my favourite bridges)

Sticky 04-14-2008 11:07 AM

This may be hard
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6692/example1tm9.jpg

blahblah454 04-14-2008 03:28 PM

Looks like a Water tower to me, as far as where it is... I might have to do some searching

james t kirk 04-14-2008 05:33 PM

Guelph

Milnoc 04-14-2008 07:58 PM

Is that the old Guaranteed milk bottle located in downtown Montreal just off René-Lévesque?

If it is, I can submit a picture now. I just found one.

silent_jay 04-14-2008 08:09 PM

I'd say you're probably right Milnoc, judging from this pic, but I may be wrong.
http://www.citynoise.org/upload/13300.jpg

Leto 04-15-2008 02:47 AM

I agree, Milnoc has it -- see the rail at the bottom? same one in both pics.

Sticky 04-15-2008 05:20 AM

Milnoc is correct.

Milnoc 04-15-2008 08:14 AM

It's too bad about the bottle too. When it was in pristine shape, it truly was a beautiful site to behold. Many people are pissed it hasn't been moved elsewhere to better preserve it.

Anyway, here's my submission.

http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC270107-1.JPG

It has nothing to do with the witness protection thread. :)

Leto 04-15-2008 12:57 PM

A bar in Montreal?

Milnoc 04-15-2008 01:14 PM

Nope! Go West, young man!

Well done! Actually the book store I was refering to is Pages. One of the best book stores in Toronto.

Anyway... carry on.

Milnoc 04-16-2008 08:17 AM

Let's zoom out a bit...

http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC270107-2.JPG

Leto 04-16-2008 11:36 AM

Ha! I knew it was a bar. Now to investigate more. it must be a 'destination ' of some sort, but the downspout looks fairly run-down. So not a real 'touristy' place.

But also the siding is weathered wood. hmmmmm

Milnoc 04-16-2008 01:50 PM

Leto, you're going to laugh when you discover what it really is! :)

Charlatan 04-16-2008 05:48 PM

Looks like a hotel's breakfast bar... or some sort of coffee shop.

blahblah454 04-16-2008 06:36 PM

Are all those lights from the reflection, or are they in the store?

Milnoc 04-16-2008 08:25 PM

Good question! :)

You're all still very cold. Let's try zooming out some more...

http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC270107-3.JPG

Sticky 04-17-2008 06:42 AM

So he is not drinking a Guiness, he is drinking a specialty coffee.

Leto 04-17-2008 08:13 AM

ya... what I was thinking too. But that's an awfully big coffee. I see a street sign in the reflection, as well as parked cars. there's also a second floor.

Milnoc 04-17-2008 09:27 AM

Here's the full picture.

http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC270107-4.JPG

And if no one can guess it this time, I'll add the left and right shots.

silent_jay 04-17-2008 11:09 AM

I reckon it's at the waterfront as I can see boats in the reflection, at least I think they're boats, time to do some more looking around.

Leto 04-17-2008 12:14 PM

Blue Parrot Coffee shop on Granville Island, Vancouver.

silent_jay 04-17-2008 12:20 PM

I think we have a winner, nice one Leto.
http://www.blueparrotcoffee.com/album_g/album_g08.jpg

Leto 04-17-2008 12:24 PM

Score! Well, it was part your observations that got it too... Okay. I've got one. Hang on.

Ok, back with a poser:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...eto_2000/K.jpg

Milnoc 04-17-2008 05:28 PM

Confirmed! Leto got it! I was hoping someone would at least recognize the window trim, and see the water in the reflection of the windows.

As for Leto's picture, it reminds me of the movie "The Sweet Hereafter", but without the snow.

silent_jay 04-17-2008 05:31 PM

It seems to have an Alberta look to it, even though I've never been to Alberta, so I don't know why Alberta popped into my head.

Leto 04-17-2008 07:07 PM

Wasn't that movie in Nova Scotia? Well, this picture isn't an eastern location, nor is it in Alberta.

Milnoc 04-17-2008 07:57 PM

Actually, the B.C./Alberta border cuts through the Rocky Mountains. So it is possible to have such scenery in Alberta, especially west of Rocky Mountain House.

The sign in the back appears to read "K Life". The closest reference I could find was a Christian radio station in California.

Leto 04-18-2008 02:50 AM

the picture is in keeping with the recently introduced 'cafe' theme. It is possible to have such scenery in Alberta, but for this one you would have to go further west. I would most likely stop here, if I was on my way to get some peaches.

Charlatan 04-18-2008 08:11 AM

Moving to the country
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches...

blahblah454 04-18-2008 01:17 PM

That looks like it could be in BC near the Kamloops area... close?

silent_jay 04-18-2008 01:39 PM

Penticton has a peach festival, but I think Penticton is a bigger than that.

Leto 04-19-2008 04:02 AM

BC certainly does have that kind of terrain... and Penticton does have peaches... This cafe would be as the crow drives if you're coming from Vancouver.

splck 04-20-2008 10:37 PM

Looks like Keremeos to me.

Charlatan 04-20-2008 11:40 PM

I'd say splck has it... And now I get the "crow flies" hint that Leto gave...

Quote:

Breakfast is found on 7th Avenue, in a collection of cafés conveniently located within an easy stone’s throw from each other. The most popular is the “K” Café whither came Lynn Redgrave to be filmed in Touched in 1998.
http://www.crowsnest-highway.ca/imag...emeosKCafe.jpgFrom downtown Keremeos, the Highway passes the firewall and its 1944 Ford fire truck displayed outside in a wired glass cage, climbs the 8% grade of the “town hill” onto the Similkameen valley’s bench and arrives at a Tee intersection which unravels the 3A from the No. 3, sending each by its own route over the Okanagan Range and into the Heart of Vacationland, B.C., the Okanagan Valley.
Interestingly, I used to sell the film Touched...

Leto 04-21-2008 07:08 AM

Game on splck, it is the K cafe in Keremeos. I really love this part of the interior. Drove the crows nest many times in my tree planting days too.

splck 04-21-2008 11:00 AM

Keremeos = peaches and pumpkins.
Next...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/splck/where09.jpg

Leto 04-21-2008 07:51 PM

what the heck kind of bridge is that???

Charlatan 04-21-2008 10:49 PM

It look like one that is no longer in use... I'd say the old road runs from the front right into the "tunnel". What purpose it serves... not sure.

Maybe it isn't that at all. Maybe it's a garage.

Leto 04-22-2008 02:56 AM

Could be... maybe a mine entrance?

Milnoc 04-22-2008 03:07 AM

There's a road sign on the side of the main road, but the image is too low-res to read it.

Leto 04-22-2008 05:16 AM

yeah, I saw that. what do you think of the terrain? dry BC or Alta interior-ish? Or northern Boreal-ish? If it's a mine entrance I was thinking Yukon...

splck 04-22-2008 08:58 AM

Here's another view.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/splck/where10.jpg

Milnoc 04-22-2008 02:02 PM

Found it! It's the old Greenwood road tunnel! http://www.greenwoodcity.com/tunnelinfo.html
Quote:

The 1913 Road Tunnel was underneath the CPR trestle. It was used until 1964 when a new double tunnel replaced it. This one was buried until 1992 when the double tunnel was demolished and this tunnel was once again uncovered.

Leto 04-22-2008 06:59 PM

amazing. How the heck did you find it?

Milnoc 04-22-2008 07:39 PM

The tunnel's year is partially visible in the second picture. I google image searched for "1913 tunnel", and found it in the third image.

This was a weird one. The tunnel looks like it was unearthed from the ground, which turned out to be true! :)

It's probably safe to assume I found it at this point. So let's move on to the next entry.

http://www.milnoc.com/images/SSPX0074.jpg

splck 04-22-2008 10:02 PM

Good work Milnoc..
I drove through that tunnel for years. I'm glad they didn't bust it up when the took out the Kettle Valley Railroad.
As for the next picture...It looks like something from Toronto of Montreal, so on that note, see you guys in a few months.

Cheers!

Charlatan 04-23-2008 12:11 AM

Looks like a condo...

Milnoc 04-23-2008 03:40 AM

As a hint, the building has some fascinating movie history associated with it.
