You people were getting warmer. Now you're getting colder!
Let me help you with another of my slot machine wins taken from a different casino. http://www.milnoc.com/images/SSPX0014.jpg Ignore the symbols and the denomination. Look at everything else, and compare it with the original picture. There's a subtle yet significant difference which will help you narrow down the location of the first image. |
Casino de Montreal becuase French is listed first?
(actually that does not meet the language requirements - the English must be half the size or less than the French) |
THAT'S IT! The WHY is that the French language is listed first! And you're right, it's the Montreal Casino. As for not meeting the language requirements, you're right about that too. But since the Casino is run by the provincial government... :)
The other picture is from the Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa. |
I figured it might have something to do the the French... I just don't know where the Casinos are and that big jackpot was in the news.
|
OK, this may be hard from this specific vantage point.
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/3355/example5fs0.jpg The hint is that the rest of the building does not look like this. This section (or facade) has been preserved from a 9th century building. Extra points for the name of the 19th century building as well. |
Is this an arena now?
|
Yes it is an arena now.
|
I'm still looking for landmarks that'll help identify the city...
|
i get this 'Ontario' feel looking at the pic. white licence plates.... older style archecture on the facade.
|
Possible about it being Ontario. The license plate of the green car is definitely white, and using the resolution enhancement in my paint program reveals a hint of red in the plate, indicating red lettering. The street board on the right appears to say "Halloween" on the second line. The rest of the board appears unreadable. So we MIGHT have narrowed it down to Ontario, assuming the Ontario car isn't from outside the arena's province.
Just a thought. What if it was a curling rink and not a hockey rink? Have any curling rinks ever been built to that size? |
John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario.
The building you are seeing is The Talbot Inn |
Charlatan is right.
Nice one. Here is another view: http://www.infrastructure.gc.ca/mc-c...n-Labatt_b.jpg |
OK... this could be hard for some.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/StevenMurphy001/TFP/photo?authkey=rg-0rAySR3s#5183735158154317026"><img src="http://lh3.google.co.uk/StevenMurphy001/R_BTqWd9zOI/AAAAAAAAClY/4t_cObwFFao/s800/2371539203_6d4bae48f5_o.jpg" /></a> |
Holy crap Charlatan! Thats a doozy!
|
hard on the eyes when you're buzzed that's for sure.
|
whoa.........no doubt jay.
|
That's the Time Tunnel!
Ha, well it sure looks like it doesn't it? Could it be in the Ontario Science Centre? |
Looks more like the entrance to a "swinging seventies" style club or thrift shop...
[Insert Austin Powers catchphrase here] |
The Edge nightclub?
|
None of the above. I will post a clue later, if nobody gets close.
|
|
Could you be more specific?
|
That looks like it could be a comic shop or something, perhaps a movie store or a props store. something to do with entertainment.
I think that writing on the front of the store is a hint... kto?o.... cant really read it |
what store? All I see is stairs in a b&w spiral paint job. If Charlatan's hint is a picture, the post link isn't working.
|
I can't see the hint either. What format is it in?
|
Crap... not sure why the link isn't working.
Here are another couple of shots of the location: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3147/...4ed144.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3239/...5954c4.jpg?v=0 |
It's in Toronto and it's in a "cool" area of town.
If nobody gets this, please get someone else to post an image. I am going to be out of town for the next 10 days and will have limited access to the Internet. I guess this one *was* a bit too tough. |
Ive tried playing with the pictures, I tried googling everthing I could think of, I got nothing.
|
I've got one more kick at it, before I give up. give me a couple or 3 hours.
|
I'm rooting for you Leto...
One more hint... this store has been in this location since the 80s and now also has a shop across the road in a much bigger space. The store across the road is a basement location, below a very cool bookstore (I bet Baraka_Guru has been in this bookstore at least once). |
Queen Street West inbetween Beverly and John streets
|
Got it! This is the Black Market Vintage Clothing Store at Queen & John in Toronto
319 Queen Street West. Must have driven past here a hundred times, funny, the place just doesn't stand out. They need to do something with their decor I guess. http://www.blackmarkettoronto.com/contact/contact.php I guess the book store that Charlatan was referring to was Bakka, on the north side of Queen. It's gone now, moved down further to West Queen West, and is called Bakka Phoenix. The building beside where Bakka was used to be the exterior that was the Lawyer's office in that wonderful '80's CBC offering of Street Legal, which for some reason is now broadcast on Bravo at around 7 AM weekdays. Since Charl is gone, I'll find a pic and post.... |
|
bump!!
|
Kits (Kitsilano) Beach Vancouver
|
Damn you're good.
(well, it's the pool beside the beach) game on Sticky. |
I was originally thinking that they would only build something big like that in TO but it just did not look like TO.
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/5827/example3mc7.jpg |
I wish they would build one like that in TO. But there are big ones at Sunnyside (Western Beaches) & Woodbine Beach (The Beaches). Nothing at all on the scale of Kits though.
They look like F1 cars. Is that circuit Gilles Villeneuve? |
No, it is not circuit Gilles Villeneuve
|
Calabogie MotorSports Park?
|
Nope, that is incorrect as well.
|
Mosport? although the height of thehills behind seem to indcate that it may be out west
|
It is not mosport.

Here is another: http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/4123/example2jc1.jpg |
Circuit Mont-Tremblant?
If it is, someone else please post a picture. I'm out of picts for now, and I have a big video editing job to complete before Friday. |
Judging by the scenery I would have to say its in BC? Possibly near Vancouver?
|
Milnoc is correct.
it is the racetrack up at Mont Tremblant in Quebec (north of Montreal). blahblah454, do you want to post a pic, Milnoc can't. |
ok, i'll do it.
Part of the underside of bridges series: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...0/bridge-1.jpg |
Champlain Bridge in Montreal?
|
No, this is not in Montreal.
|
James T, I am surprised at that guess from the bridge expert. :)
How about? Pattullo Bridge, New Westminster-Surrey BC |
Oh yes, Game on Sticky.
(One of my favourite bridges) |
This may be hard
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6692/example1tm9.jpg |
Looks like a Water tower to me, as far as where it is... I might have to do some searching
|
Guelph
|
Is that the old Guaranteed milk bottle located in downtown Montreal just off René-Lévesque?
If it is, I can submit a picture now. I just found one. |
I'd say you're probably right Milnoc, judging from this pic, but I may be wrong.
http://www.citynoise.org/upload/13300.jpg |
I agree, Milnoc has it -- see the rail at the bottom? same one in both pics.
|
Milnoc is correct.
|
It's too bad about the bottle too. When it was in pristine shape, it truly was a beautiful site to behold. Many people are pissed it hasn't been moved elsewhere to better preserve it.
Anyway, here's my submission. http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC270107-1.JPG It has nothing to do with the witness protection thread. :) |
A bar in Montreal?
|
Nope! Go West, young man!
|
Quote:
Anyway... carry on. |
|
Ha! I knew it was a bar. Now to investigate more. it must be a 'destination ' of some sort, but the downspout looks fairly run-down. So not a real 'touristy' place.
But also the siding is weathered wood. hmmmmm |
Quote:
|
Looks like a hotel's breakfast bar... or some sort of coffee shop.
|
Are all those lights from the reflection, or are they in the store?
|
Quote:
You're all still very cold. Let's try zooming out some more... http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC270107-3.JPG |
So he is not drinking a Guiness, he is drinking a specialty coffee.
|
ya... what I was thinking too. But that's an awfully big coffee. I see a street sign in the reflection, as well as parked cars. there's also a second floor.
|
Here's the full picture.
http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC270107-4.JPG And if no one can guess it this time, I'll add the left and right shots. |
I reckon it's at the waterfront as I can see boats in the reflection, at least I think they're boats, time to do some more looking around.
|
Blue Parrot Coffee shop on Granville Island, Vancouver.
|
I think we have a winner, nice one Leto.
http://www.blueparrotcoffee.com/album_g/album_g08.jpg |
Score! Well, it was part your observations that got it too... Okay. I've got one. Hang on.
Ok, back with a poser: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...eto_2000/K.jpg |
Confirmed! Leto got it! I was hoping someone would at least recognize the window trim, and see the water in the reflection of the windows.
As for Leto's picture, it reminds me of the movie "The Sweet Hereafter", but without the snow. |
It seems to have an Alberta look to it, even though I've never been to Alberta, so I don't know why Alberta popped into my head.
|
Wasn't that movie in Nova Scotia? Well, this picture isn't an eastern location, nor is it in Alberta.
|
Actually, the B.C./Alberta border cuts through the Rocky Mountains. So it is possible to have such scenery in Alberta, especially west of Rocky Mountain House.
The sign in the back appears to read "K Life". The closest reference I could find was a Christian radio station in California. |
the picture is in keeping with the recently introduced 'cafe' theme. It is possible to have such scenery in Alberta, but for this one you would have to go further west. I would most likely stop here, if I was on my way to get some peaches.
|
Moving to the country
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches... |
That looks like it could be in BC near the Kamloops area... close?
|
Penticton has a peach festival, but I think Penticton is a bigger than that.
|
BC certainly does have that kind of terrain... and Penticton does have peaches... This cafe would be as the crow drives if you're coming from Vancouver.
|
Looks like Keremeos to me.
|
I'd say splck has it... And now I get the "crow flies" hint that Leto gave...
Quote:
|
Game on splck, it is the K cafe in Keremeos. I really love this part of the interior. Drove the crows nest many times in my tree planting days too.
|
|
what the heck kind of bridge is that???
|
It look like one that is no longer in use... I'd say the old road runs from the front right into the "tunnel". What purpose it serves... not sure.
Maybe it isn't that at all. Maybe it's a garage. |
Could be... maybe a mine entrance?
|
There's a road sign on the side of the main road, but the image is too low-res to read it.
|
yeah, I saw that. what do you think of the terrain? dry BC or Alta interior-ish? Or northern Boreal-ish? If it's a mine entrance I was thinking Yukon...
|
Here's another view.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/splck/where10.jpg |
Found it! It's the old Greenwood road tunnel! http://www.greenwoodcity.com/tunnelinfo.html
Quote:
|
amazing. How the heck did you find it?
|
The tunnel's year is partially visible in the second picture. I google image searched for "1913 tunnel", and found it in the third image.
This was a weird one. The tunnel looks like it was unearthed from the ground, which turned out to be true! :) It's probably safe to assume I found it at this point. So let's move on to the next entry. http://www.milnoc.com/images/SSPX0074.jpg |
Good work Milnoc..
I drove through that tunnel for years. I'm glad they didn't bust it up when the took out the Kettle Valley Railroad. As for the next picture...It looks like something from Toronto of Montreal, so on that note, see you guys in a few months. Cheers! |
Looks like a condo...
|
As a hint, the building has some fascinating movie history associated with it.
