is that on madison in toronto off bloor?
|
hmmm, I've never seen a house like that in Toronto. But it sure does put me in a Montreal state of mind... like it is close to McGill...
|
deleted: double post
|
Yes Montreal. But its on a specific historic spot in that city.
|
Hotel Dieu ?
|
Is it Sherbrooke street?
|
You got it Stick. Apparently its part of an historic district called the Golden Square mile.
|
I know the area, but I have never heard it termed the Golden Square mile.
(I am not claiming to know anything, however) OK, I guess this means that I post next. I have not been to this place, but kick myslelf for not going everytime I pass the signs pointing to this place while driving on the highway. http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/429...264s425gf9.jpg |
look at all the Ferraris.
Which highway by the way? |
OK, I will give up the highway.
The busiest highway in Canada |
No one?
OK another hint. If I did stop there I would probably have to spend the night becuase I would probably not be in a condition to drive after my visit. |
Hmm. So along the 401 somewhere... Is it a banquet hall?
|
It looks familiar to me too.....
|
It is not a banquet hall.
Another hint: It is west of T.O. |
Is it Hooters?
|
If it is then i've been totally wrong about the target demographic.
|
Is it some sort of club or other house of debauchery?
|
Not hooters
Not a club or house of debauchery Don't let the Ferraris throw you off, they just stopped for a visit like most of us would wish we would. Ok, so what you know so far: - It is of the 401 (or at least there are signs telling you where to get off the 401 to go to this place) - It is west of T.O. - Some people leaving this place may not be in condition to drive. |
Is it a mausoleum?
|
Nope not a mosoleum.
|
haha! mausoleum... demographics. good one JTK.
Is it a casino? |
How far from the Highway 401?
Mohawk Raceway? |
Quote:
Again I have not been but Ihave always wanted to go everytime I saw the sign from the 401. From the maps I look up it looks like it is about 4-5kms from the 401. You will all have to exuce me, I posted the wrong image. I feel so bad. Ans silly. We can either move on with someone else or use this image http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/454...264s600sm6.jpg |
Is the location always filled with Ferraris?
|
No, the Ferrari club (to which I don't belong) stopped there for a tour.
|
Sticky is that a valet in the parking lot?
|
Sleeman Breweries in Guelph, Ontario
|
HeyAgain, you are right.
Sorry about the mixup on the pic everyone. |

The first shot was a mistake. I posted the wrong image from the same set I found.
Have you been to the Sleeman Brewery? |
Yup, and drive past it all the time, This one was bugging me so bad since I totally recognized it but couldn't place it. This was a great one.
|
Can someone else please post a pic? Thanks
|
Allrighty!
Here's a couple of clues: I took this photo on a recent Wednesday, somewhere in the GTA. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/DSCF0002.jpg |
Is that the little plaza on north service road in Mississauga with the California's bar?
|
That it is! The plaza's name is Applewood Village and the bar (California's) hosts a car cruise night every Wednesday during the summer. The Plaza is also home to one of the GTA's few remaining Little Ceasar's Pizza franchises; Reason #2 for my visit that night.
The weather that day was lousy and so was the turnout, but here are a couple of photos. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/DSCF0003.jpg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/DSCF0001.jpg |
I go to Demetrios most sundays from October to April after playing football for a beer.

|
I don't even know what to seach for.
I am sure that small church canada would turn up way to many results. |
I think I've seen that church---is it in southern Ontario? Niagara region, maybe?
|
its ringing a bell for me too......
|
the yellow and blue line brings to mind the downtown of Quebec city, where they paint the outlines of original buildings...
|
think central provinces and lotsa wheat. i just got back from visiting my girlfriend there. she has just over 2 months left to go still..... (lots of hints there) also, leto check your pm box.

Quote:
In the interest of fairness, here is what was in my pm box: ...hrm....its in the capital of Saskatchewan. something extreamly closely related to another thing that they are super super proud of. also, think government agency... *********** I know! It's the RCMP Depot Academy. This is the Depot Chapel, and is the oldest building in the city of Regina (according to Wikipedia): Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy, Depot Division Main article: RCMP Academy, Depot Division The RCMP ChapelThe Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy, "Depot" Division, is on the western perimeter of the city. As capital of the North-West Territories, Regina was the headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police (the RCMP's predecessor) before "the Force" became a national body with its headquarters in Ottawa in 1920. The city takes great pride in this national institution which is a major visitor attraction and a continuing link with Regina's past as the headquarters of the Force. The "Depot" Division chapel (the oldest building still standing in the city) is a major visitor attraction in Regina. Nackawic New Brunswick
Been there. Done that.... I'll go....here's an easy one. Give me the name of the statue and the place it is located. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c5...4/untitled.jpg |
Whatever it is, its gorgeous. And I think I see waves crashing in the background, so I'm wondering "is it a memorial to a maritime disaster?"
|
Quote:
I've not been there, but I would like to go there some day. IMHO, it is the most humbling memorial in the entire world and yes, the sculptor has the ability to bring tears to my eyes. |
The only memorial that can evoke that kind of sentiment has to be the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge. this however, is in France. Did we earn rights of conquest when we took it back from the Germans (albeit with help from the Brits & Yanks!)?
*** edit: Ah you are a wily one JTK.... This site is in fact a part of Canada! I didn't know that: (from http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/s...TOKEN=49819640) The land for the battlefield park, 91.18 hectares (250 acres) in extent, was (as stated on a plaque at the entrance to the Memorial) "the free gift in perpetuity of the French nation to the people of Canada". Eleven thousand tonnes of concrete and masonry were required for the base of the Memorial and 5,500 tonnes of "trau" stone were brought from Yugoslavia for the pylons and the sculptured figures. Construction of the massive work began in 1925 and 11 years later, on July 26, 1936, King Edward VIII unveiled the monument |
Yes, it is the Vimy Memorial and yes, the land it sits on is a part of Canada so, it was a bit of a trick, however, it is "in Canada"
I've been doing some reading about the memorial. The sculptor was Walter Allward of Toronto and his work is breathtaking in its portrayal of the human form. There are some amazing photos here: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/s...TOKEN=70990464 The statue in my post is called "Mother of Canada" or sometimes just "Canada" I sometimes just think of her as "Mother" since of all the people in our lives as humans, the one to which we feel the tightest bond is our mothers. She's kind of forelorn, standing by herself. Not the highest statues (those are Peace and Justice), not the largest, but for some reason, she is the focal point. In the pictures I have seen of the memorial, time after time, I am drawn to her. She represents not only Canada, but the mothers of the soldiers who died at Vimy (to me at least). She is young as was Canada, not even 50 years old as a country at the time of WW1. Her eyes are cast down upon the tomb of the soldier below her as if mourning her own son. She watches over the tomb of the unknown soldier so that he will never be alone. This is a link to a video taken at the rededication a few months ago of a lone fiddle player standing next to the Mother of Canada. It reduces me to tears every time. Even Queen E was moved when she was at the rededication. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYLv5wasaHc Here is a picture of the Mother of Canada standing watch over the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You can see that she is looking down on the grave of her son, or of all her sons. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c5...stored_031.jpg |
I did some reading on this memorial earlier this summer, as I believe it was just refurbished and re-dedicated. Apparantly, it was even protected by Hitler during WWII, because he got wind of the intention of his troops to either vandalize or destroy it. He actually thought that it was one of the best memorials ever created because it commemorated peace over war.
next up: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2000/falls.jpg |
and...
|
Okay, so are we saying that Tiberius has opened up the game to "Where am I on Canadian soil?" because in that case we can site embassies and other places that are considered "Canadian" but not necessarily here.
Secondly, of course Hitler didn't want to destroy the monument---before he became a dictator, he was a sensitive artist. Dah. |
Elora Gorge ??
|
This is not the Elora Gorge, look to the west...
|
Yes, keep looking to the west..... west... but not too far.
|
Yes, keep looking to the west..... west... but not too far.

hint please
|
Okay.... these falls are known as the "Niagara of the North". They are in Ontario.
|
The hint was too big.
Kakabeka Falls near Thunder Bay |
Sorry... I didn't want this thread to languish. It was too big wasn't it? But game on Sticky...
|
I deleted my post content due to cranial discombubulation.
|
I had two choices of images I wanted to use for this one.
I have never been there but I hope to get there one day: http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/6765/example1ek6.jpg |
Hey! that's my cottage.
|
Quote:
I have to get there someday too :) |
You're always welcome... Open a few Muskoka Cream Ales, and cut some brush....
your pic, do I see a rock wall across the water? If so, could that be Bon Echo park? (Mazinaw rock). |
No, that's not it.
I am going to wait to give any hints to see if there are other guesses becuase I though that it might have been too easy. If I give the hint you may see what I mean. |
then I will go with the colour of the water and hazard a guess that this is a picture of Lake Louise.
|
Leto, you are the man.
I guess my non hint hin was enough. The other pic I was considering posting was this one: http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/447/example2qz9.jpg It is hard to find a pic of Lke Louise that is not obviously Lake Louise. For those non Canadians who now view this thread, here is a a standard pic of Lake Lousie: http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/3...se20sumfs1.jpg I have to get there someday. Your turn Leto |
Yes! that certainly was an ass-worthy try.
By the way, this picture is stunning. You should frame it. I think that I may. Quote:
Okay, here's one that I've wanted to post for a while, and I bet it's a gimme for some of you: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1..._2000/350p.jpg |
"They" wouldn't let me in.
Damnit. |
Well lookie here, I get back from holidays and see old Gassy Jack in Gastown.
That's my guess - It's Gassy Jack in Gastown (in Vancouver of course). Oh, Lake Louise is more like Lake Lousy. They don't like young people there, but that's along time ago and for a different tread. It's nice to visit, but had a high snob factor at the time. |

yup, that's correct. I haven't been there in over 10 years, but sure had some fun there back then.

Photo taken in the spring, after the surface melt, but prior to high altitude melting, which means that this is pretty much as little water as possible (neglecting when the water isn't moving at all). |
Is that in Kluane?
** edit: good to see you back Bossnass! |
Nope, this is down in BC.
Although it looks like get to make a Nahanni and Kluane tour this fall (if I get convinced to join the DEW line remediation team, a bunch of northern travel required). And thanks. I've been so busy that I've been going for days without turning on my home computer. I logged on a few weeks ago and could find the Canada forum. |
I'll go with Whistler/Blackcomb, although I don't know the name of the falls.
|
I'll go with Whistler/Blackcomb, although I don't know the name of the falls.
|
Not near whistler, but near a 'newer' ski hill. I'm pretty sure that this waterfall is also in a national park.
|
Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park
|
Indeed, it is wapta falls. Although you won't find many pictures when it isn't a full out waterfall; this shot is a trickle.
|
Can someone else please post a picture? Thanks!
