A friend was recently telling me he read a newspaper article about this new fad. Supposedly, it's something that's spreading across the country in the larger cities. Participants try to complete jumps in as graceful a manner as possible, with the winner being the one who performs the most difficult stunts while looking good doing it. Think of it as equal parts urban skateboarding, gymnastics, and suicidal urges.

There was some name they had for this new "sport", but it must not have been City Jumping or Google would have more to say on the issue. With luck, someone else will have a link to the original article, I'd like to read it myself.

Yamakasi - FngKestrel owns the movie. It's in French. Probably where it started.

he_haha 01-26-2005 02:24 PM

Interesting sport, I'd definitely call it a sport though.

The google search term to use would be Free Running.

Update: Sniffing around IMDB about Yamakasi, I came across this user comment:

Quote:

In the bright lighted side, we could see the yamakasis, these stuntmen of cities in the luc Besson movie. In the shadowed side, there is parkour, that is also called the art of movement, and that most of the public doesn't know about, and it is understandable: these spider-men's reputation grew, and other young people wanted to practice. David and Sébastien share their passion with anybody who wants to know. The news is spreading: from neighbour cities of noisy and sarcelles, young people move to evry to learn the parkour. The rumour works well, and the show 'notre dame de Paris' offers them to go on a tour, but David and sébastien refuse: a two years tour across France would cut them from their base, and above all they don't want to abandon the other young people who need their help. Then luc besson comes up with a script for yamakasi. They refuse that too. The scenario presents them as revolted boys from housing estates who trick the police and use their skills to steal. Seb explains: 'us, that we don't want, it's to prostitute our art' chilling incorruptible ones. For how long? Seven of the newcomers - including David's cousin give in the temptation and play in the movie. They separate from the group of evry, and rename themselves the yamakasis (strong man, strong spirit). Once famous, they claim to have invented the Parkour, betraying the true parkourists. David, Seb and the others (Stéphane Vigroux, Yoann Vigroux, Jérome ben Aoues, Rudy Duong, Kazuma and Michael Ramdami) rename themselves the 'traceurs'. Irritated by this story, they tell me that: 'to anyone who want to learn the art of parkour, it's welcome, but for the media events, we reserve us the right to choose: now we know who come to train when there's a TV near, and who's really got the passion'. We understand them.
Interesting bit of back story about the whole Free Running phenomenon.

Does anyone else think of Prince of Persia when you see this. Some of the stunts reminds me of both SoT And WW.
Kinda cool to seem them performed in real life.

Yeah, totally. I think the draw of games like that, plus movies like Matrix and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon where people are running along and up walls, gives real life behavior like this so much appeal.

sadistikdreams 02-12-2005 01:35 PM

Man, I learned to do that in Aikido. You just gotta stick the landing, and tumble when you land. That's something you don't see in the movies, people just land crouched. Tumbling reduces the impact you feel when you land.

Oh yeah! That is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this vid....incredible. What I wouldn't do to be able to perform stunts like these maniacs, ridiculously hardcore.

TexanAvenger 02-13-2005 06:01 PM

I used to do that kind of thing all the time with some of my friends for fun, though I've cut down as of late because my loved ones have worried I was going to get "hurt" or "killed."

In all honesty, the hardest part for me was learning to stay focused. If you get distracted, you can miss when something happens that's going to make you need to adapt, and if you don't adapt to the situation you may find yourself in need of cast. Always having been somebody that suffers from fairly severe ADD, I gained a lot of cuts and bruises that way.

Actually, learning to do this kind of thing is pretty good in the rest of your life too. It teaches you to think incredibly quickly and builds up your awareness of self really well. My friends and I can walk through a crowded room without touching a single person just because we're all really aware of where our body parts are at a given moment.

Not to mention the self-confidence boost we get from being in shape and knowing the kinds of crazy shit we can do that most people don't even think about.

phathom 02-13-2005 06:11 PM

only one thing to say about that. F-ing A!

bernadette 02-13-2005 08:53 PM

that is some serious muscle & mind control.

ironmaiden7o7 02-13-2005 09:20 PM

Definitely some great stunts.

bbbbbb555 02-13-2005 10:28 PM

some of that stuff is crazy.
does anyone have a longer video of that stuff, i would like to see it. it reminders me of trials riding on bikes, i have seen people do some of the same stuff.

Fremen 02-13-2005 11:05 PM

Wowzers! Unreal! That's the stuff I want to see in martial arts movies, not that wire work crapola.

Watch old Jackie Chan stuff. That's hardcore without the wire work. And then watch the outtakes as you see him land on his head...repeatedly.

Arachnid 02-14-2005 02:59 AM

thanks for the link

Cheers

i dont get why you say either he has balls or none at all. it looks to me as though he's just got balls. it made me laugh when he did the frontflip over the root in the forested area, because it really reminded me of starwars. i wonder if he was thinking about luke skywalker when he did it. but yeah that's pretty amazing.
