I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

WTF is wrong with the government....wait...never mind.

cyrnel 01-21-2005 08:52 AM

That's between geekish and Kids in the Hall twisted. Someone needs a primer on "poor taste."

Charlatan 01-21-2005 08:59 AM

They forgot the corpses...

Bill O'Rights 01-21-2005 09:16 AM

Well...I'm glad to see my tax dollars are being well spent. Couldn't they have put more energy into providing kids with educational materials relating to tsunamis, rather than...that? Anybody else notice that everything that's not a sea creature has to go inside the "FEMA Shed"? Hell, it's not even a good game that's in poor taste.

Charlatan 01-21-2005 09:50 AM

Bill... you missed the booze bottle that goes in the trash can...

the_marq 01-21-2005 09:51 AM

wtf are you talking about? The link is down.

OK, it seems to work now.

OK, that's a little odd, but I don't think this flash game was made in answer to the Dec26 Disaster. It's still poor judgement, but not horrificly bad.

cyrnel 01-21-2005 09:56 AM

I'm sure the critters stuck in the tree will bring back warm memories for many.

Shall we start a dead-pool for how quickly this thing becomes a 404?

Sticky 01-21-2005 10:23 AM

Can anybody else not beat this game?

Jonsgirl 01-21-2005 12:05 PM

Man...this sucks. I can play Hurricane House and Disaster Maze or a twin towers game, but no tsunami game.
Well, on second thought, maybe it doesn't suck. Those other games are enough to turn my stomach.

FEMA pulls tsunami game from Web site

By LARA JAKES JORDAN
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- An online game to educate kids about tsunamis was pulled Friday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Web site amid worries it trivialized last month's devastation in southeast Asia and beyond.

The game, which debuted on FEMA's kids' Web site in 1998, asked players to guide a car, a starfish, a surfboard and other beach objects back to their proper places after they were scattered by a tsunami. Winners were linked to a cartoon dancing frog.

"A tsunami has just hit FEMA Beach and has rearranged a few things," the game directed. "Please put the 9 objects back where they belong to see the cyber-prize!"

FEMA spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride said the game was first scrubbed from the award-winning kids' site immediately after the Dec. 26 tsunami. But the agency later restored it after hearing complaints from teachers and educators who missed it, she said. It was being removed for good Friday because of "the current environment," she said.

"We thought that was the appropriate thing to do," McBride said.

The tsunami cause an estimated 158,000 or more deaths in 11 nations along the coasts of southeast Asia and western Africa, and left as many as one million survivors needing food and shelter.

Educators who still want access to the game and other kid-friendly disaster education materials can contact FEMA, McBride said.

A spokesman for GiveWorld, a California-based online charitable organization, said the game's motive appears innocent but risks trivializing the recent devastation. GiveWorld says it has helped raise $500,000 for the tsunami victims.

The game "makes it look like after, life can be just be pulled back together," said Upendra Bhatt, a member of GiveWorld's board of directors. "And it's not going to be that easy."
I can't figure out how such a game can ever be appropriate...
