G'day Canada! (from oz)

Hi Canada. Just wanted to say that you guys are awesome. I went through school with a whole bunch of canadian exchange students and if they were representitive of the whole then it must be a good place.

JJRousseau 11-18-2004 07:11 PM

G'Day Oz. I went drinking with a bunch of aussies and if they were representative of the whole, it must be a great place too!!!

What part of Oz do you live in?

almostaugust 11-18-2004 07:28 PM

Im from New South Wales in a place called The Blue Mountains, about 1 hour from Sydney. Its bloody hot over here at the moment.

Janey 11-19-2004 06:33 AM

It's going up to 9 degrees today in Toronto. That's pretty warm for mid November!

Yakk 11-19-2004 08:19 AM

Oz and Canada are alot alike.

Both have a massive inhospitable wilderness with a thin strip of truely habitable and populated land on the edge. Canada's is a frozen north, and Oz's is a desert interior.

In both, if you leave civilization and try to live outdoors, you are quite likely to die of exposure.

We both have strange shoe customs. Canadians take off their shoes indoors, while Auzzies shake theirs out & hang them on walls to avoid being killed by random venemous critters.

Canada has Roots clothing and the Beaver is our national animal, so Auzzies see us as all a bit naughty when visiting. Austrailia has beaches, so Canadians see all of your naughties when visiting.

Auzzies has the platapus. Canada has the moose. I mean, could it be any more clear?

Janey 11-19-2004 12:24 PM

I don't think the shoe customs are weird. It is only right to remove your shoes before walking around your house. Do you really want all that dirt on your rugs and floors? especially road dust, or what ever crap you may have stepped in? I had a friend visit once, who did not remove his shoes. When he left, I noticed that there was a large smear of dirt in my carpet by the couch where he was sitting.

That's why i have slippers or flip flops by the door ready to slip on when i come in.

Oh yes, I also shake out my shoes if i leave them outside, or if i put on my boots up at the cottage after being away for a while. Ontario is a natural habitat for the black widow spider, and I don't want to get bitten. Up at the cottage, there are Massassauga rattle snakes too. Better safer than sorry.

Aussies also have the reputation for being adventurous, and rowdy. A good bunch of partiers. Their only problem is that their beer isn't as good as ours... hehe

An Aussie girl I know told me that the Aussies got a bit of a chuckle out of Canada's olympic team parading around with "Roots" written on their outfits.

Apparently in Oz, "root" is a slang term for sexual intercourse.

Sort of like, "He threw a root into her"

Or something like that.

Sort of like in Quebec, Lacrosse is a slang term for masturbation.

Just thought I would share that little gem.

JJRousseau 11-21-2004 02:44 PM

James T. That reminds me of the US broadcaster's comment at this years' Olympics. referring to a female weightlifter, he said "she's got a great snatch". ps, do you know what Cap't Kirk's middle name is?

almostaugust, we have lots of friends in Oz but have never been. I've never heard of the blue mountains. Are they close to the wine country?

Janey 11-22-2004 06:01 AM

James Tiberious Kirk....

JJRousseau 11-22-2004 07:48 AM

Well done Janey, I wanted to name my son Tyberious, but my wife vetoed it. I got Ty instead.

Janey 11-22-2004 11:31 AM

I thought everybody knew that about the Captain and the Roman Emperor who was his namesake:

Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar (November 16, 42 BC–March 16, AD 37)

some good stuff on him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiberius

But then I took Latin in highschool! :D When I have a son, I want to give him a 'power name' too. I was thinking of Temujin. that was ghenghis khan's first name. I like it, it is sort of in keeping withmy heritage, but hubby is not so sure. We could call him 'Tem' for short , or 'Tim' Lol. Better than Attila, or Adolph I say...

No, not really near wine country. We are about an hour west of Sydney. We are part of the great dividing range, that is like a mountainous range that travels down the side of the country. When you see bad bushfires on tv, its usually up here where people get burnt out. Lots of bush, very dry. Plenty of wildlife (and thats just the people).

Ishmal 11-24-2004 07:46 PM

just thought i'd pop in to the Canada section to say "G'day" ... seems Oz is already doin that. so i'll contribute.

"G'day M8s"

I got to remember that :D

Suave 11-25-2004 11:19 AM

Canada and Australia should form some kind of alliance, and we can take over the world with good food, good attitudes, and great booze!

I was just through there at the end of October. Drove through to go to Orange, down to Cowra, then back through the Blue Mountains on the scenic route past Jeloan Caves (can't remember the right name). Wasn't hot there when I was through though, lotta rain. Had one hot day when I was on Manly beach which was fantastic. Love it in Oz, can't wait to get back again.

I don't think you've got the proper use down there. I believe it to be more like "I had a good root last night" or "She really likes to root" I have some Aussie freinds that get a laugh outta the Roots brand as well. They come to visit and always pick up some shirts to take home.

Ishmal 11-25-2004 03:29 PM

yer...
sherpahigh has put it in the right context.

So when we say he's really rooting for the home team, we could be in for some real action, am I right?

Pierre

LOL. na we still use it in that context to... "rooting for a team" ... but it is also used as another word for sex... "i'm getting a root 2nite" ... we aussies have a weird use of the english language, hey?

Let me see if I can use 'root' correctly, in auzzie-speak:

"Female football groupies really root for the team."

Ishmal 12-08-2004 05:41 PM

Ummm...

i still don't think u've quite got it...

try... "the cheer-leader is rooting the umpire" - as in sex

and... "the fans are rooting for their fav football team" - as in cheering

Nimetic 04-28-2005 05:49 PM

We also say (but more rarely).. "I think it's rooted"

Meaning that some device is totally wrecked. The lawnmower, office printer, or similar. Similar to saying "I think it's f####d", but not as rude/vulgar or extreme. It's the sort of thing that a tradesperson might say - more likely among outer suburbs types or government school educated. You don't hear either word much in CBD white-collar environments. (In fact there's very little AU slang in those environments)

Occasionally you might hear

"reckon she'd be a good root".
or
"XX is an easy root"

Janey 04-29-2005 06:32 AM

LoL I think Yakk was going for the extra points of an all in double entendre pun.

I like it.

kramus 05-04-2005 05:39 PM

Hello Oz. I've got distant cousins there but I don't know the address. I do know that the name is Todd, and that Alice Springs is named after Alice Todd, the wife of the director of telegraphy for Australia back in the 1870's I think it was. Apparently there is a Todd river as well. My great grandfather came over in about 1900 "for health reasons" . . . hmmmm

spindles 05-04-2005 10:43 PM

In fact, the Todd river is most of the year, dry. It runs right through Alice Springs and holds the most interesting of regattas (given the river's dryness!

edit - getting the tag right

kramus 05-07-2005 07:17 PM

Ishmal 05-18-2005 07:58 PM

Hardknock 05-18-2005 09:18 PM

*just popping in for a sec*

Speaking of beer, I just visited Adelaide recently and tried Victoria Bitter and west end for the first time.

Good stuff!

I wanted to bring some back but couldn't. Maybe next time.

diddagirl 05-23-2005 06:26 PM

Ohhh Oz! A few of my friends are there right now, and I am beyond jealous. Damn sexy accents!
