This is one of the cannon from the HMS Bounty, which was burned off Pitcairn Island on January 23, 1790. This particular cannon (as I remember there are two on the island), is in Len Brown's front yard. I never met Len, as he and his wife were off the island when I visited, but I stayed in the home of his son-in-law, Steve Christian. The cannons, and Bounty's anchor (which is in the towns square) were retrieved from the wreck of Bounty by the National Geographic in January 1957.

Just on a point of information - Hadrian's wall is totally inside England.

The wall that's closest to the England/Scotland border is the ANONINE wall.

I'm sure that the question INTENDED to ask for a picture of Hadrian's Wall, but it'd be like asking for the US/Canadian border, and beig shown a picture of the sign outside Portland that says "<-- Oregon / Washington -->"

:D

Thank you for the clarification. I would have accepted either the Antonine Wall (built by Antonius) or Hadrian's Wall (built by Hadrian) as they have both been borders at one time or another...

unclephil... Kepler (Johannes Kepler was an astronomer/mathmetician who came up with Kepler's laws of planetary motion) was not the answer that I was looking for. You were right that Newton was the English half of the equation, but wrong on the German part.

It comes down to FailedEagle and unclephil:

landhaus lemke - mies van der rohe haus

ludwig mies van der rohe, one of the greatest architects of our century, designed the "landhaus lemke" house for karl lemke, owner of an art institute and manager of a berlin printing works, in 1932. It is the last house which mies built in germany before he emigrated to the usa in 1938. the building of the house took place during the period between the closure of the bauhaus in dessau in 1932 to its termination in berlin in 1933. although in comparison with other of mies works, this brick-built house is rather simple and modest, it is nonetheless a demonstration of his unmistakable formal expression. the house is on ground level only and has a flat roof. an unusual transparency is created by the large integrated glass areas on the garden side of the house causing the interior and exterior space to merge. the rooms situated in the right hand corner of the house are visually connected via the terrace. the quality and distinctive character of this house reveals the sense of clarity and proportion.
the house and adjoining garden are situated in the park landscape of the lake obersee. in 1977 the house was registered as a listed building and has been open as a work of architecture to the public since 1990. exhibitions of modern art corresponding to the character of the building are shown in the house. decades of misappropriation, which brought with it significant alterations, have disturbed the original architectural spatial effect. it is hoped that the planned reconstruction should once again exhibit mies' intention as well as enhancing the present public and cultural function of the house.

The Remaining Players
Daniel_ 3rd - Mount Farber
unclephil
Lucifer 2nd - Merlion Park
flyman 1st - Sentosa Island
Sticky

ROUND THREE
In Singapore, the official logo of the Singapore Tourism Board is the Merlion. The Merlion is a creature that has the head of a lion and the body of a fish.

According to the STB, the Merlion recalls the story of the legendary Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion while hunting on an island, en route to Malacca. The island eventually became the sea port of Temasek, a precursor to Singapore.

There are five official Merlions on display in Singapore. I have only been able to find four of them. As there are five remaining in this competition, the first four to post move on to the next round.

You must post the picture of a Merlion and give it's location. Once a Merlion has been posted, it cannot be used again. If someone finds the one I couldn't find, I will give them immunity for the next round (I am not saying which one it is, you will just have to trust me on this).

Game on!

The Merlion is the national emblem of Singapore. Its landmark statue, once at the Merlion Park, was relocated to the front of the Fullerton Hotel in April 2002.

Charlatan 03-24-2006 12:24 PM

So far so good... Yes, Lucifer posted an old location but it is the same Merlion.

As for the one that I couldn't find... nobody has posted it yet.

IF after either Sticky or unclephil post a Merlion, feel free to post the fifth Merlion. One of them will get immunity.

Please do not post until either Sticky or Phil have posted a unique Merlion!

Sticky 03-24-2006 12:53 PM

I am taking a gamble here:

This is the smaller "second" Merlion at Merlion Park.
