There's No Place Like Home
It's great to be back on TFP (v.4)
On TFP v.3, someone started a hometown photo thread. It was great. Who was that? They shall be credited and thanked here. :D http://www.seattlephotographs.com/ph...t_sign_2-d.jpg |

I searched for pictures from my town, and what do I get?
http://www.scarysquirrel.org/vacatio...hickbanner.jpg I was not aware of any horror in my town... much less one concerning squirrels. |

Welcome to bucolic Houston, Texas...

well, as i said before, i´m originally from Norfolk Island.
although its still an Australian Territory, it has its own flag and its own legislative council. heres the flag...

like i said previously, the island was used to imprison the worst criminals that England sent down under. during the second occupation of British convicts and soldiers, the island became known as the Hell in the Pacific. in 1855 the British criminals and soldiers abandoned the island, and were sent to Port Arthur in Tasmania they left all the buildings as they were, and tthey can be seen here...

in the above photo, the main building was the barracks for the soldiers, note the huge wall. the nice house next to it was an officers house. there are a few more of these houses further along Quality Row. the large walled in area closer to the ocean is one of the remaining prison yards. since the coast line of the island is too rough and harsh...

no boat is able to dock. so all goods must be shipped in from the freighters in smaller boats...

this process is interesting to see, because if a large package is needed on shore, they have to strap a couple of these boats together. most things like cars on the island are really small because of this. norfolk is a small, quiet island, with a rural flavour (cows have right of way!). 2000 people live in a community where you never have to lock your car or house, and you always acknowledge people and say hello. in 1789, Fletcher Christian led a mutiny on the English ship The Bounty. the men of this mutiny fled to Pitcairn Island, where they lived for many years. in 1856, the Pitcairners arrived at Norfolk, and have survived their ever since. |
