Why are zombies so hungry?

Why? They do not need to eat. The reach out for the succulent flesh of humans even when they lack mouths and stomachs. Would a pair of zombie lips and teeth nipple endlessly on what ever came in range?
http://www.screamteam.com/newpage/demonteethsmall.jpg
That’s a rhetorical question.

This mysterious craving, much like the zombies that display it, can’t be explained by mere mortal science. They are the dead and in that capacity they must always consume life.
http://www.homepageofthedead.com/fil.../torrdie1s.jpg

Brains seem to be what the garden variety undead desire most of all. This might be what we look like to them.
http://www.epilepsytoronto.org/learn...es/pulsing.gif

Zombie scholarship speaks to this point:
The deactivation of a zombie's nervous system, caused by possible chemical and genetic alterations, has often been used to explain their very low mobility and rate of metabolism. The chemicals in the human hypothalamus, found in the brain, act as a stimulant for their metabolism, prolonging their not-quite-dead condition. That make the brain highly sought after in the random wanderings of the living corpse.

I wonder if they would like sesos.

I don't. It tastes like old cheese.

So when you take your sweet smelling living brain out on the town please be careful who you hang with

Dem crazy Japanese.

i mean.... Canadians.

ER! ZOMBIES! RIGHT!

Stiltzkin 07-31-2003 08:10 PM

Hey! Japanese are cool!

Erhm. It's a matter of haves and have-nots. Humans have life and zombies do not. You never appreciate what you have until it's gone. Zombies are without life and are jelous of us fleshy people who still breathe. They can find no way to regain their own lives, so in a jelous rage, they take ours. Bastards!

Giant Hamburger 07-31-2003 08:15 PM

Well spoken Stiltzkin!

Sometimes I too am jealous of the fleshy people and their breathing.

gnort 07-31-2003 08:23 PM

speaking of the japanese and the canadians...i wonder if japanese and canadian zombies crave different things.....how come this is never addressed? Why is the focus primarily on zombies from the US? Sure 28 days later kinda brings up British zombies...but they are barely zombies......so many questions, so little info..

Stiltzkin 07-31-2003 08:23 PM

GH:
Breathing isn't all that it is hyped-up to be. It is a perpetual process and can sometimes become laborious if one should decide to loaf around for a whole summer and lose one's physical condition. Terrible. Consider yourself lucky for not having to breathe!

gnort:
Only USA zombies don't have enough sense to simply die and stay dead. They're greedy, selfish slobs even in death. Corpses from other nationalities tend to have more dignity ;)

snoop 07-31-2003 08:32 PM

If they weren'y hungry they'd make pretty piss weak stories wouldn't you think?

gnort 07-31-2003 08:35 PM

hmm i understand where your coming from. And other countries have more to worry about than zombies (ie, vampires, lycanthropes, etc.). They have no need for zombies.

Hail Snoop!

Maybe if zombies were driven to read a good book or needlepoint a quilt rather than kill and eat human flesh you might have a point. I'd like to see the undead challenge their motor skills by driving extremely fast or perhaps jumping off of very tall things. That's what I would want to pursue if I were the living dead. I am already hungry all the time.

gnort 07-31-2003 08:54 PM

Hmmm, a zombie with a car could make getting brains so much easier. The zombie would just have to run people down and they wouldnt even put up a fight when they go digging for brains.

Early H 07-31-2003 10:14 PM

G.H. does a Zombie have a sixth sense that detects live brains? or a realy stong since of smell, or Something not yet discovered?

AH, but it IS addressed...

You've clearly never seen the latest Japanese-import cult TV show on late night cable: <i>Undead Chef!</i>.

It takes place in Kitchen Graveyard, where zombie chefs from around Japan come to challenge the four <i>Undead Chefs</i>, masters of their chosen cuisine. The featured ingredient is ALWAYS brains.

"Uh, Fukui-san?"
"Yes, Otta?"
"In this bowl, <i>Undead Chef</i> Glaaaarrrhhh is mixing brains, minced brains, soy sauce, fennel, soup, and minced onion."

"<i>Undead Chef</i>, the brain fritata was pungent, yet subtle. The brain ravioli was sweet, but still retained the sharpness of the brains. Truly, <i>Undead Chef</i>, you are a master!"

Hail Early H!

That is an interesting question, a question that no living person could answer with complete certainty. I would first assume that zombies are unable to smell. If they could, the sickly sweet stench of death that certainly pervades their general area when they gather would mask almost any other odor. My hypothesis is that they instinctively know that warm, living things have plump, tasty brains. They can probably sense the succulent flesh in general and once they begin rending the victim limb from limb they start to get a taste for the old hypothalamus. I know I would.

In The remake of the movie Night of the living dead........ The Zombie told everyone they needed to eat Brains because it made their pain go away................. so I don't think its a hunger thing.

Hail Zombieist!

I thought that was Return of The Living Dead and not the 1991 remake of Night of The Living Dead. In RoTLD, the zombie motor skills were much more developed than in the undead universe of George Romero. They were fast and could operate fairly complicated devices. One even used the phone to request "more brains."

TerresqueÜ 08-01-2003 10:14 AM

Zombies eat people because they loathe us for still having the gift of life that was taken away from us...I mean uh...err...them!

Spinach_Indeed 08-01-2003 10:17 AM

I'm suprised with Zombies Today. They are mercilessly working themselves to the bone in order to find succulent brains to feast on. Enduring black men with Shotguns, Angry Mobs, and Savy Teenagers to simply get what they so desire.
What with the internet and the opening of www.brains4zombies.com , They never have to leave the home! Making Akward Social Interaction a thing of the past!

Hail Living Citizens!

It is no coincidence that this thread has risen from the dead.

The remake of Dawn of The Dead will be out next month.
Perhaps it will answer some of the questions posed in this thread.
The trailer can be viewed here:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/dawnofthedead/

I can only hope that it lives up to my enlarged expectations.
If you do watch the trailer check out Tom Savini (reknown makeup artist) in his role as a local sheriff.

It will be soon.

Giant Hamburger 02-12-2004 03:32 PM

Hail Astro-Zombie Master!

Good find! Apparently this is one of the worst movies ever made. I have longed to see it. There was a remake in 2002: Mark of The Astro Zombie, which attempts to rival the original dreck.

Do these zombies serve you well? Hopefully they bring back voluptious screamers to reward their creator's long hours in the laboratory. I should get out of the garden more often.

Good morning,

Since Dawn of The Dead will open tomorrow I thought I would raise this thread from its shallow grave.

Are humans the only ones zombified in the George Romero Universe? What about the deceased dogs, cats, and countless dead bugs that should be teeming over everything? Do zombie bugs only search for living counterparts of the same species to eat? Zombie birds pecking at your eyes would be irksome. Zombie birds trying to get at each other’s tiny brains would be entertaining. Which is it?

Why don't protagonists in zombie movies wear body armor? If you going up against an enemy, no matter how scary looking, that can only bite and scratch then you are a fool not to take a little extra caution in your wardrobe.

That being said, I look forward to another zombie movie.
I am hopeful,
-GH

Redlemon 03-18-2004 08:53 AM

Must read material: THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE by MAX BROOKS. The website gives a good flavor of the book, which I've almost completed.

Won't help your questions on the movie, GH, since it is its own universe. Zombies are infected with a virus, solarum, transmitted through bites. The virus attacks the brain, elminiating the entire front lobe. The virus only affects humans, so there are no animal zombies.

mml 03-18-2004 09:39 AM

It seems as though Zombies need brains to live, but what do they snack on? Also, if they can drive, do they go to the drive up window at fast food restaurants? These questions puzzle me.

Redlemon 03-18-2004 11:01 AM

mml: Zombies require no nourishment, and do not specifically eat brains. No one has determined why it is that they devour human flesh. They cannot even digest flesh; it simply sits in their stomachs. They are unable to drive, as they lack the coordination; this is also why they walk slowly. They can't handle ladders, either.

water_boy1999 03-18-2004 11:15 AM

So Redlemon, what happens to all this flesh they continue to consume? If it just sits in their stomach, wouldn't you have a ton of fat ass zombies after you?

Redlemon 03-18-2004 11:49 AM

Eventually, either through combat or internal pressure, the stomach breaks open and the eaten body parts fall out.

Guy: Str8, peace out.

Zombies are funny. But not 'haha' funny.

txlovely 03-20-2004 11:29 AM

I've noted over the years that zombies also prefer the plump flesh of voluptuous, screaming, blonde, teenage girls who are usually wearing bed clothes of some sort. I guess you could say that zombies have good... taste? :D

Also, one must question how it is that, although they move so very slowly, they are always able to catch said screaming, running, speeding car-driving teenage girls and rip them limb from limb? :hmm:

Ah the many secrets of zombies. What fantastic lives they lead...

Good morning,

And good morning to you, my greasy, fatty friend.

Since Dawn of The Dead will open tomorrow I thought I would raise this thread from its shallow grave.

Did it stink when you pulled it's rotted corpse from the bottom of the thread pile? Did it bite you? If it did, we may have to put you down.

You have just waded hip-deep into the murky waters of zombie mythology. Zombie lovers can usually be split into two camps, Romero zombies and O'Bannon zombies. Here are the differences:

Romero Zombies:
Slow
Eat any human flesh
Can't talk
Can be taken down with a shot/ blow to the head

O'Bannon zombies (taken from the 1985 film, "Return of the Living Dead"):
Fast (occasionally run)
Eat only the brain (and yell alot about it too)
Seem to be pretty chatty
Even if you chopp them up, they still keep grabbing at 'cha.

This newest film, the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" seems to have smashed these two types together and added a bit to the mythos, which I can't reveal without spoiling some of the movie.

Why don't protagonists in zombie movies wear body armor? If you going up against an enemy, no matter how scary looking, that can only bite and scratch then you are a fool not to take a little extra caution in your wardrobe.

How about one of those big hamster balls? That would be really cool.

That being said, I look forward to another zombie movie.
I am hopeful,
-GH

Some say the story of Jesus is one of redemption and resurrection. For those in the know, Christ was a Zombie.
