Cheap, drinkable thrills

Ok. I'm not much of a drinker. But a while ago, I overheard this old Jewish guy at a Publix saying how he would start buying this stuff by the case if the store would carry it regularly. Today, I bought a bottle. And omg it's absolutely delicious! Tastes just like Welch's Grape Juice to me. Oh and it's less than $4 / bottle lol. I'm thinking I could even add vodka to this on the rocks or something in the summer. But straight out of the bottle at room temperature, it's soooo good! Anyone try this?

Chuck is now about $4 here lol. But they are great wines. Stock up when you go and all. Excellent stocking stuffers :).

Redlemon 10-06-2009 05:19 AM

I didn't think anyone voluntarily purchased Manischewitz outside of Passover.

wooÐs 10-06-2009 05:30 AM

I'm not Jewish, but is is like, rude if I do or something??? lol It's really really good.

I'm not Jewish either, but it's not like you are drinking holy water or something. It's just prepared Kosher. And, as I read up on it, it is "a sweet Concord grape wine with added corn syrup", so that's where your sweetness is coming from.

mixedmedia 10-06-2009 06:14 AM

high fructose corn syrup, blech, never again.

I don't have any cheap, drinkable thrills really...I'll drink Yuengling beer sometimes...it's pretty cheap.

wooÐs 10-06-2009 06:47 AM

M hm yah I read that. But at particular times of the year, they use pure can sugar. And that's how the bottle I picked up is prepared. No clue how Jewish holidays run so I'm thinking I need to stock up on the cane sugared version.

btw, it's 10:47AM and I just had a swig for 'good luck' lol. It's sooo damn good to mah tongue!

Aaah, the Arbor Mist thread...

Redlemon 10-06-2009 07:01 AM

On vacation in Saint Martin, we passed by some folks on their balcony who were drinking Arbor Mist and ice mixed in a blender. Never tried it myself.

Worldsking and I maybe the only ones on tfp who drink it, but by god do I love the High Life.

Oy gott, Manischewitz... One thing in your OP is undeniable, woods my dear: you are not a drinker.

That stuff is like god damn cough syrup. The nastiest, sickest drunk I ever got was off Manischewitz at a friend's seder a couple years ago. That stuff's so sweet and cloying, I have a hard time finishing a glassful--but once that glass is gone, the second one is no problem, and then I'm interested in a third...

BadNick 10-06-2009 08:12 AM

We're not Jewish, but my mom and dad used to drink Manischewitz grape mixed with 7-up, so as a little kid they let us taste it and we liked it.

Since I didn't have a natural attraction to dry wines when I was a teenager/early 20 something, the Manischewitz memories eventually led me to Lambrusco wines since they are also fruity and sweet. I have pleasant memories of getting stoned and drinking Riunite Lambrusco and going skinny dipping. According to wiki, "...Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Lambrusco was the biggest selling import wine in the United States..." Around that time Boon's Farm Apple (which is a malt bev. not wine) was sort of popular in our circle of cheap/poor friends since it was only $0.99 bottle and just enough for a mild buzz if I drank the whole bottle.

Now if I want a sweet drink, which is not very often, I'll have some Cointreau or Grand Marnier maybe a Dubonnet on the rocks.

Jinn 10-06-2009 08:27 AM

mm Boone's Farm.. we used to drink about half a Boone's and refill the other half with McCormick's vodka (also the cheapest). By the time you hit the bottom of the bottle, you were *done*.

P.S. This could totally be General Discussion rather than Nonsense..

Nothing CLOSE to cough syrup! Jager is like cough syrup (and I do like it too lol.) But this shit's like something you'd pour over muffins or something lol. I'm telling you - Welch's grape juice.

Hmm - with 7Up might be interesting. I couldn't ever get into the Boone's Farm thing - too many bubbles. I get bloated wiff to many bubbles which is why I rarely drink beer.

But Grand Marnier....mmmmm... I'll never forget my first sip.

LOL

I have about 1/3 of a gallon of this gasoline on my counter right now from making Jello Shots a couple years ago. I mean, if you're making Jello shots, just buy the cheap shit. By the time the shots are broken out, you can't taste anything anyways lol.

Have great recipes though - including Tequila Sunrise, Chocolate Covered Cherry, Chocolate Orange, etc. Huge hits o' mine :p.

Super yuck.
I had a friend a few years ago, who would become extremely vexed, when I dissed his 'dog'

I got all excited when I saw my local gas station started carrying this. Never had it in my life, but the flavors looked so good that I had to try one.

Dear lord you can't even mix that post-gargled piss with anything to make it drinkable. *shudder*
