Obscure pop-culture trivia game!

Here's how it works. I ask an obscure pop-culture trivia question. You attempt to answer. You PM me as soon as you have posted a possible answer. This makes me check the thread. As soon as someone gets it right, they have the opportunity to ask one of their own. As for the questions, anything goes... movies, TV, books, music, etc. Now, note that this is OBSCURE, not IMPOSSIBLE. Don't do something that no one in the world is going to get.

That being said, let me begin with this one:

You hear the sound of a million people saying 'foop.' Then you hear the sound of a million people saying 'whop.' What just happened?

KWSN 07-01-2003 09:55 AM

...

Bones, you have managed both to be wrong and scare the bejesus out of me at the same time.

Keep guessing, people.

Hint: It's from a book.

my brain runneth over...by razorback jack...

KWSN 07-01-2003 02:40 PM

uh....huh....

Keep guessing, folks. Not yet.

Hint: It's from a very well known series of 5 books, the 3rd book in the series if memory serves me right. Could be the second though.

T.U.B. 07-01-2003 03:27 PM

it's from Life, the Universe and Everything by Douglas Adams.

Hell, that was a hard find, I knew I had this book, but didn't know wich. 25 books or so later founded it.
First looked over it 'cause I have the Dutch translation. Apparently "foop" and "whop" in Dutch is "fiouw" and "wok" (it's a really bad translation, but made by someone with too much time, it's not a official one..."

YourNeverThere 07-01-2003 03:31 PM

oh man!!!! damn you Tub, right before me Grrrrrrrrrrr
Your right though, becuase of the robots who are white from crikket

KWSN 07-01-2003 03:31 PM

God job T.U.B.

Per your request (via PM, which you're SUPPOSED to send when you answer, if you read the instructions), I have another of my own...

What kind of scene can you find invariably in ALL of Stanley Kubrick's movies?

...keep going...

SaltPork 07-01-2003 06:46 PM

Llamas in the background?

KWSN 07-01-2003 06:52 PM

wrkime: no

Bones: don't make me eat your soul.

Keep trying. And READ THE RULES. I'm getting no PMs whatsoever....

BTW, ONLY PM if you think you may have it right. Not if you're joking. If everyone who posts PM's, my brain explodes.

WhoaitsZ 07-01-2003 07:37 PM

ok that killled the fun factor

KWSN 07-01-2003 07:50 PM

Oh, no, you can answer jokingly....

But don't PM me if it's a joking answer, otherwise my mail client and my browser will both lose the will to live, curl up in a ball, wither, and die.

crow_daw 07-01-2003 09:57 PM

Is it that there is always a scene with a monolith featured somewhere in the background?
I've heard the answer to this question before, and its pissin me off cause I can't think of it, but I put this as a guess.

grumpyolddude 07-01-2003 09:57 PM

A Kubrick cameo.

Fremen 07-01-2003 11:12 PM

voice over

JadziaDax 07-02-2003 01:51 AM

KWSN, why not just subscribe to this thread so you'll know when someone posts to it instead of asking people to PM you... some people may not want to PM anyone, but still may want to play the game. Just a thought.

cheese 07-02-2003 03:38 AM

Good call, good call.

However... no one has gotten it right as of yet.

Please continue guessing.

Here's a hint though: There's a scene in every Kubrick film that takes place in a certain type of room.

I'll leave you to figure out which.

Continue.

TerresqueÜ 07-02-2003 06:58 AM

An interrogation scene? With a two way mirror.

mtsgsd 07-02-2003 07:19 AM

I'd guess the bedroom.

Snakeyes 07-02-2003 08:28 AM

I'm afraid I'm going with ANAL on this one.

vermin 07-02-2003 08:03 PM

A room with all white walls?

Snakeyes 07-02-2003 09:37 PM

Ok I have a new answer.

BONES ACTUALLY GOT IT RIGHT!!!!

Yes, there is a bathroom scene at some point in EVERY Kubrick film. Congratulations, Bones. It's your turn.

MrFlux 07-03-2003 06:30 AM

Is it anal?

Batman976 07-03-2003 08:56 AM

Diff'rent Strokes... but I had to use IMDB to get the answer.

My first guess was anal

Nikilidstrom 07-03-2003 03:56 PM

anal sex? gimme a break!

Its obvious that all three of these women had ORAL sex with Gary Coleman for parts in the show. I think it was on an A&E biography special.

uncle phil 07-03-2003 04:39 PM

female actors in different strokes?

KWSN 07-03-2003 07:04 PM

All Willis' girlfriends on Diffrent Strokes?

uncle phil 07-04-2003 04:02 AM

housekeepers...

Charlatan 07-04-2003 04:44 AM

Housekeepers...

uncle phil 07-04-2003 07:26 AM

ok, bones has got me going on this "three women" thing so here goes...what do laurie london, patty duke, and merrilee rush have in common?

uncle phil 07-04-2003 07:40 AM

yes, bones, all three have ani; henceforth that will be a given wherever humans and animals are involved...not the correct answer, though...

Fremen 07-04-2003 03:09 PM

They all three put out songs at one time.

uncle phil 07-04-2003 04:18 PM

they all did put out songs at one time...getting close...

KWSN 07-04-2003 06:36 PM

1-hit wonders?

KWSN 07-04-2003 06:40 PM

A #8 hit, a #18 hit, and a #28 hit.

There.

Fremen 07-04-2003 06:59 PM

They all put out songs while doing anal with Bones?

uncle phil 07-05-2003 04:13 AM

well, smack my ass and call me sally! k-dub is the winner...your turn, buddy...

KWSN 07-05-2003 08:57 AM

OK... this one isn't too hard but I'm feeling very Donnie Darko-ish right now and this is the only one I can think of...

What is the name of the street Donnie Darko lives on?

Munku 07-05-2003 10:22 AM

I believe it's Rose St., In Middlesex...

KWSN 07-05-2003 11:08 AM

wow... that was fast.

Good job, Munku. Your turn.

Munku 07-05-2003 01:20 PM

Oh crap I gotta think of one of these questions?!

Munku 07-05-2003 01:30 PM

What does Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia) Read while laying on Jim's bed during American Pie?

KWSN 07-05-2003 03:12 PM

NUDIE MAGS!

Munku 07-05-2003 03:15 PM

Which one?

KWSN 07-05-2003 03:30 PM

hmm... good question...

I remember Jim's dad getting him Playboy and Hustler (or Penthouse, I forget which).

It also may have been Screw, though.

Munku 07-05-2003 05:38 PM

Nope... :P

I dont think enough people want to play. :(

uncle phil 07-05-2003 05:43 PM

MAD magazine...

Munku 07-05-2003 05:50 PM

Umm no, and no. It's a porn mag.

Munku 07-05-2003 06:48 PM

Nice work ;)

KWSN 07-05-2003 08:00 PM

Some German... all I know is that the picture of him in the paper was actually of Martin Bormann, one of Hitler's aides.

Heh.

Linky

KWSN 07-05-2003 08:32 PM

PETER GOFF!!!!!!!

<--- winnar.

KWSN 07-05-2003 09:39 PM

Actually no, I'm not a winner for THAT, but I am a winner for THIS:

Roberto Minueta.

BOOSH!

KWSN 07-05-2003 09:43 PM

OK.... so here it is....

Dave Grohl made history towards the end of 2002, becoming the first person ever to do... what? Give all the details possible.

(and no, it does not involve anal.)

Fremen 07-06-2003 01:21 AM

In the 2002 Triple J Hottest 100 in Australia, Dave Grohl achieved a new record of having a part in 10 of the top 100 songs.

The fact I'm thinking of is similar, but it's not the same one. It's a US thing only.

uncle phil 07-06-2003 12:38 PM

didn't he do some same-sex video or something which led to the foo foghters recent banning by mtv?

Yeah, he did a video in drag with Jack Black, and the VIDEO was banned (not the Foo Fighters).

Not the answer, though.

Munku 07-06-2003 01:52 PM

This one is too hard. Next! :O

KWSN 07-06-2003 02:45 PM

Close Bones... kind of (not the anal part).

If I get 2 more decisions that it's too hard, I'll give the answer and open the next one up to the first taker.

KWSN 07-06-2003 03:44 PM

ok, ok... I'll tell...

Dave Grohl became the first person ever to have a part in all of the top 3 singles on the Billboard Rock chart at the same time with different bands. The singles were (but not necessarily in this order - they jostled around a few times)

Nirvana - You Know You're Right

Foo Fighters - All My Life

Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows

There you have it. The floor is now open for the next taker.

uncle phil 07-06-2003 04:06 PM

kdub, ain't no trivia question too hard...the answer is out there somewhere...go with another one...

KWSN 07-07-2003 04:22 PM

Ok, OK, no takers, so I've got a question of my own.

In the movie Half-Baked, when Thurgood (Dave Chapelle) is on a date with Mary Jane, it shows the amount of money he has to spend remaining in the bottom right corner of the screen. It depletes (or raises, in one case) whenever there is a transaction. If you've seen the movie before, you should know what part this is. Anyway, after the last thing Thurgood buys for Mary Jane...

A) What does he buy her? (this is kind of easy)

and

B) How much money does he have left after the fact? (a bit tricky)

good luck...

crow_daw 07-07-2003 06:20 PM

shit, just guesses from memory.......

A)Ice cream

B)13 cents?

KWSN 07-07-2003 08:22 PM

A) Yes, Ice Cream, but a certain variety, and by that I don't mean flavor. Think.

B) You are DAMN close.

uncle phil 07-08-2003 09:08 AM

frozen yogurt

a dime

KWSN 07-08-2003 09:34 AM

A) No, phil, bones.

B) No, phil, bones.

Hint for A: it's a type of sundae, but it doesn't have the word 'sundae' in it. One certain ingredient makes all the difference.

Hint for B: It's OVER 13c, you guys are going under.

Snakeyes 07-08-2003 11:35 AM

a banana split and.. 14 cents or 15?

KWSN 07-08-2003 02:18 PM

Snake, the banana split part is correct.

Bones, the 16c is also correct.

So, it's up for grabs for either of you, whoever picks up first.

Snakeyes 07-08-2003 02:29 PM

Ok I have one.

Who is Martha in Paul McCartney's song "Martha My Dear"

Munku 07-08-2003 02:40 PM

Martha wasn't actually a woman, but was his sheepdog named Martha. ;)

Snakeyes 07-08-2003 02:54 PM

Damn it! Now you make a question!

Munku 07-08-2003 03:57 PM

Hmm a question, from me.. Give me a little bit please.

Munku 07-08-2003 04:21 PM

In 1995, the Atlanta Braves acclomplished what major feat?
Also, that same year, the Braves' team included 3 Pitchers, 3 Infielders, and 3 Outfielders, whose names all began with M. (First name) Can you name the 3 in one of those categories? Either the 3 Pitchers, Outfielders, or Infielders. No mixing and matching sorry.

KWSN 07-08-2003 04:28 PM

3 pitchers (there were 4 actually): Greg McMichael, Greg Maddux, Matt Murray, and Kent Mercker. They won the world series that year (over the Cleveland Indians).

<--- wins.

Edit: Oh, if you were looking for FIRST name, yes, there WERE three: Mark Wohlers, Mike Stanton, and Matt Murray.

Munku 07-08-2003 04:30 PM

First name.

Munku 07-08-2003 04:30 PM

Quick edit haha.

uncle phil 07-09-2003 04:41 AM

hey k-dub, if you can't come up with a question, i can...let me know...

KWSN 07-09-2003 04:50 AM

I was about too last night, and the PC bombed. I got one now.

OK, SnakeyeS is uneligible for this one, as I gave him it as a possible question for him to use. Snakeyes, if you give anyone the answer, you get NO PIE!!! UNDERSTAND!?!?!

...and there's nothing worse than no pie...

OK, so here goes

It's another Half-Baked question...

When Thurgood (Chapelle) dresses up like a Jamaican to go to Samson, Samson asks him what part of Jamaica he's from. What is Thurgood's EXACT response?

Snoop Dogg's real name is Calvin Broadus.
