amonkie 11-20-2009 06:00 AM

yep..

uncle phil 11-20-2009 06:15 AM

WH?

amonkie 11-20-2009 06:29 AM

Yep again...

uncle phil 11-20-2009 06:42 AM

north america?

amonkie 11-20-2009 07:19 AM

Nope

BadNick 11-20-2009 07:38 AM

on an island?

my misc. musings: I keep thinking of your "Polo!" and unsteady on the couch comments thinking you're on horseback playing polo in Jamaica. Don't fall and wear protection.

amonkie 11-20-2009 07:49 AM

I'm not on an island.

But.. Don't make Mother Nature mad at you. She has a way of taking the wind out of your sails.

BadNick 11-20-2009 08:14 AM

are you on a ship?

amonkie 11-20-2009 08:30 AM

yes

uncle phil 11-20-2009 09:11 AM

are you docked in miami?

amonkie 11-20-2009 10:26 AM

No

uncle phil 11-20-2009 10:34 AM

south america?

amonkie 11-20-2009 10:37 AM

Nope

uncle phil 11-20-2009 10:39 AM

atlantic side of the two americas?

amonkie 11-20-2009 10:41 AM

Yes

BadNick 11-20-2009 11:46 AM

I'm still trying to use the polo clue...are you on that cruise ship Marco Polo? Marco Polo - Cruise Ships I haven't figured out where it might be right now.

amonkie 11-20-2009 12:23 PM

No... but there is also clue in my previous comment about Mother Nature.

BadNick 11-20-2009 01:30 PM

The Doldrums? Are you floating aimlessly in the doldrums off the Atlantic Coast of Africa? aka Intertropical Convergence Zone aka Horse Latitudes?

From Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner:
...
All in a hot and copper sky,
The bloody Sun, at noon,
Right up above the mast did stand,
No bigger than the Moon.

Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
...

uncle phil 11-20-2009 01:50 PM

the gulf stream?

amonkie 11-20-2009 04:18 PM

Getting closer with Gulf stream... you guys never played Marco Polo as a kid? Always gotta get away without making any noise, how would you do that?

BadNick 11-20-2009 08:39 PM

dammit! I thought I had it.

OK, are you like a quiet pirate floating in the Sargasso Sea? ...though I don't know how that connects with your game analogy.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...argassoSea.jpg

amonkie 11-20-2009 09:12 PM

I always got away underwater... which is where I am.

On a boat.. not in the Sargasso Sea. But I do wish the mail was a little faster...

BadNick 11-20-2009 09:47 PM

oh yea! Now I remember we always played that game in pools and lakes...but I just forgot until you reminded me.

Are you at the Aquarius Underwater Habitat? <<< if you are that's very freaky! because a few days ago I saved a link as one of my favorites so I could hide there on one of my next turns, either there or Marine Lab

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...0I/aqmw3_b.jpg

Atlantic Ocean: Ten Days under the Sea; The Oceans; Scientific American Presents; by Edmunds; 4 Page(s)

It was seven on a July morning, and I already felt like I had been awake for hours. I was standing with my research team in a cigarette-style motorboat speeding toward Conch Reef off Key Largo, Fla. When we reached our destination on the reef, we would descend into the clear, dark-blue water and stay there for rather a long time.

We were about to start our first mission in the Aquarius underwater habitat, a sixperson research station situated 6.5 kilometers (four miles) off Key Largo and 15 meters below the waves. For the next 10 days, we would be aquanauts, living every marine researcher's fantasy: we would spend as many as six hours a day working in the water and then retire to a warm, dry, comfortable shelter for meals, discussions, relaxation and sleep.

amonkie 11-21-2009 02:32 AM

We are definitely getting warmer but still no dice. There is a clue in my post above ;)

BadNick 11-21-2009 11:02 AM

ahhh, it's in the mail!

So you might be at Coral World's underwater mailbox:

Currents is a convenient spot to purchase Coral World post cards for mailing in the world's first underwater mailbox. Drop them in the Underwater Mailbox in the Underwater Observatory (we will stamp them Mailed Underwater at Coral World). Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...coralworld.jpg

amonkie 11-21-2009 01:35 PM

Nope! LOL.

But half the fun of this game is learning about all the other places you guys come up with while I'm sitting here bemoaning that you can never stay in the eye of the storm.

BadNick 11-21-2009 06:13 PM

keep this up and I'm gonna quit! ...j/k

Does this "eye of the storm" have something to do with TV?

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ofthestorm.jpg

amonkie 11-21-2009 06:37 PM

Nope.

Important clues that have been dropped:

Mail

Mother Nature

Eye of Storm

Underwater

Ship

Seeing them in that order... does that help?

BadNick 11-21-2009 07:03 PM

the TV question was just to distract you while I find where you really are...I'm back to the search

---------- Post added at 10:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:55 PM ----------

ps: it's funny...I put your terms into google in the order you listed them and got: "HowStuffWorks, Good Tips for Sinking Ships, How to survive a sinking ship"

---------- Post added at 10:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:00 PM ----------

This has a long shot of maybe being right: are you on the R.M.S. Rhone? Dark Destinations - R.M.S. Rhone

amonkie 11-21-2009 07:21 PM

Ding Ding Ding Ding!
http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/med...ion-of-rms.jpg

A little bit of the story The R.M.S. Rhone sank during a hurricane even though it had an experienced captain and had a strong steel hull. The Rhone was at neighboring Peter Island when the hurricane hit. The captain tried to take the Rhone out to open ocean to ride out the storm and prevent his ship from being pushed up on the rocky shore of the island. As the strength of the storm was growing (winds over 100 miles per hour and seas 20-30 feet high!) he cut away his anchors and took his ship, as fast as he could go, between Peter Island and Salt Island to reach the safety of the open sea. The height of the storm hit as he was passing Salt Island. The clouds, fog, and wind-driven rain made it had to almost impossible to see anything. The captain could not see the island. He could not even see the front of his ship! The lookout at the front of the ship shouted that there were rocks next to the ship. The next thing that happened a big wave pushed the Rhone on top of Black Rock. As the ship lurched the captain was tossed off the ship, never to be seen again. As the Rhone was slammed down on Black Rock it split the ship in two. The cool water rushing into the hot steam boilers caused them to blow up and finally sink the ship.

Unfortunately the passengers had no chance of survival. For their own safety the crew had tied them to their beds and locked them in their cabins! Even if they could have gotten out of their cabins, they still would not have had much of a chance, because in those days most people did not know how to swim! 124 people died here, but surprisingly, 23 people did survive.

the rest is here: Day 3 - Rhone Dive 1
This is supposedly one of the best wreck dives in the British Virigin Islands, and its been on my places to see for about 10 years.

Glad you stuck that one out... I was starting to get worried ;)

BadNick 11-21-2009 07:50 PM

never give up...that's my middle name BadNick NeverGiveUp ...and then that last family part I can't post or they'll hunt me down and blow my cover.

That was a real good one, amonkie. Like you mentioned above, I also like just hunting around and finding out about places as I'm searching for the person who's "it".

OK...where in the world am I this time?

uncle phil 11-22-2009 03:16 AM

NH?

BadNick 11-22-2009 09:42 AM

yes! ...that's excellent, unc. You're off to a great start!

uncle phil 11-22-2009 10:22 AM

WH?

BadNick 11-22-2009 03:29 PM

nope. 1 for 2 ...still not bad, at least in baseball. in golf that's probably pretty bad.

---------- Post added at 06:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:26 PM ----------

oh BTW: you're not going to be near Baltimore between now and the end of the year, are you? Preferrably, for me, between Christmas and New Year's. If that oldest continuously operating pub in the U.S. is not too much of a dive or a transvestite gay bar, we should see about meeting there and invite Th and other locals. Are we gonna do this or what?

amonkie 11-22-2009 04:39 PM

So NH and EH..

Are you looking at a sea?

uncle phil 11-22-2009 04:41 PM

your rope?

BadNick 11-22-2009 09:42 PM

yes da rope. The country I'm in touches the sea, but I'm not right on the sea. The place I am is a "superlative" natural feature/phenomenon ...longest, biggest, widest, deepest...sort of thing.

amonkie 11-23-2009 02:45 AM

The Sex Museum in Amsterdam? LOL!!!

Ok off to find the serious guess now...

uncle phil 11-23-2009 03:33 AM

med?

BadNick 11-23-2009 07:45 AM

the country is on the meds...like me...but as I said, the location where I am is not on the sea.

amonkie...I love Amsterdam! Sadly, my endurance to drink like those crazy Dutch bastards I hang around with is somewhat lacking. I just don't get how they drink that Geneva stuff like it's water when it's basically like straight gin. So at various times, you may have seen me sitting, or laying, on a curb right outside the red light district...just resting until I get my bearings back. It seemed that after midnight the whole of Amsterday must be on a merry-go-round that keeps spinning until after breakfast the next day. Ahhh, fun times...last time I stayed at the Hotel Krasnapolsky and if you go out the back door you're right in the red light district. Great restaurants, bars, and museums, too...my sober up activities. Of course the smoking is also to my enjoyment. I'll be going back again some time after New Year's.

amonkie 11-23-2009 10:25 AM

Gotta love amsterdam.. I can actually say i've been in a Red light window.. though fully clothed :D

Are you at the Vatican?

BadNick 11-23-2009 11:07 AM

Not in or near the Vatican.

...I was only window shopping in the Red Light district. No intention of purchasing. < does that sound like a lame excuse during a Catholic confession?

uncle phil 11-23-2009 01:02 PM

spain?

BadNick 11-23-2009 01:10 PM

no Seņor

uncle phil 11-23-2009 01:39 PM

greek?

BadNick 11-23-2009 01:43 PM

yep...don't bend over in the shower < that's not a clue I'm just saying.

Now find the superlative natural feature I am at and you win.

uncle phil 11-23-2009 02:10 PM

the oldest pet rock in thebes?

BadNick 11-23-2009 07:25 PM

aww, that's so cute, unc. but no.

But I'm impressed how you used all the pertinent clues, like "natural feature" (rock) and "superlative" (oldest).

amonkie 11-23-2009 10:25 PM

Samaria Gorge? (Longest Gorge in Europe)

http://www.photoseek.com/greece/01GR...orge-Crete.jpg

and BTW if I got it right.. I'm jetting out to computer-free land for a couple days so I'll take a turn when I get back :)

uncle phil 11-24-2009 03:12 AM

the temple of apollo in thermos?

BadNick 11-24-2009 07:46 AM

monkie,
Nope...Samaria Gorge is on the island of Crete...I'm on the mainland. I hope you have a great time in Computerfreeland...and I hope you have some pics to show us when you get back.

unc, is that a natural feature? I imagine it could be, but in any case, I'm not there.

uncle phil 11-24-2009 11:06 AM

i got nothin' with superlatives...

BadNick 11-24-2009 11:56 AM

clue:

deepest

uncle phil 11-24-2009 02:13 PM

oh, shoot...

the corinth canal...

BadNick 11-24-2009 07:09 PM

nope, not that. I meant to say it before but forgot....amonkie was really close in concept though not in location.

I'll let you contemplate further and I'll figure out a good clue if you still need it.

uncle phil 11-25-2009 03:36 AM

vikos gorge, the worlds deepest canyon?

BadNick 11-25-2009 06:54 AM

el correcto, hombre! I'm at Vikos Gorge. So you're up, unc. Vikos Gorge is a cool looking place, see below pics that I collected.

Otherwise, I can't get into the arguments about whether it is the deepest gorge, canyon, valley, whatever, or not...it's just semantics, considering how wide of a "valley" would still qualify as a "gorge". So I agree that it depends on the aspect ratio; if the width is several times the depth, that's too wide to fit my preferred definition. Vikos is narrow and deep and looks cool.

looks like I-81 through central PA...

i'll think of someplace by this afternoon, i think...

BadNick 11-25-2009 08:06 AM

For sure. Those valleys up in PA and NY are gorgeous. I love just driving around and looking at the dramatic views.

no hurry...a couple of our other regular participants are exploring the world in person vs this virtual stuff.

uncle phil 11-25-2009 01:21 PM

ok, where am i?

BadNick 11-25-2009 10:05 PM

NH?

oh, it's Thanksgiving Day already. Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving with family and friends.

uncle phil 11-26-2009 03:49 AM

BadNick 11-26-2009 10:27 AM

Plymouth Rock?

uncle phil 11-26-2009 11:01 AM

plymouth's are obsolete; the rock's still there, but alas, no...

BadNick 11-26-2009 07:45 PM

I always had a soft spot for the 413 wedge with pushbutton torqueflite

are you on the sofa?

uncle phil 11-27-2009 04:25 AM

BadNick 11-27-2009 11:18 AM

uncle phil 11-27-2009 04:27 PM

"you don't know what i've got..."

and if you did, you wouldn't find it in washington, or DC...

hey unc, you had a Vette, I had an E Jag...lucky we never met at Dead Man's Curve

I was cruisin' in my Stingray late one night
When an XKE pulled up on the right
And rolled down the window of his shiny new Jag
And challenged me then and there to a drag
I said, "you're on, buddy, my mill's runnin' fine
Let's come off the line, now, at Sunset and Vine
But I'll go you one better if you've got the nerve
Let's race all the way
To Dead Man's Curve"

amonkie 11-29-2009 01:23 PM

White Mountains?

I think I would much much rather prefer White Sands to White Mountains...

(also this feels like a dumbass question - the "in my pencil" is a geographic reference to where?)

uncle phil 11-29-2009 02:00 PM

pennsylvania...

not white mountains...

BadNick 11-29-2009 04:54 PM

BadNick 11-30-2009 02:10 PM
