OK, where in the world am I this time?

I'd think I'd take the Rai, only because it sounds like you can buy property with it. Still struck by how quickly you found me. I thought I picked a rather obscure island, one I never heard of until recently.

BTW- where did you find that ad?

Back to the regularly scheduled game-

NH?

yes NH and yes EH

Tul,
after I wild guessed Guam and you said I was getting warm, I went on google maps and looked around in the Pacific on the west side of Guam. I saw a couple very small white dots that were not even labeled, so when I zoomed in on one of those it said "Colonia". Since I never heard of Colonia, I googled it and found a couple links that I read and that convinced me to throw the guess out there.
One of the links was this one: Federated States of Micronesia Colonia Dive Base Leader Job and employment (SOUTHPACIFICEMPLOYMENT.COM ...which made me fantasize that I could instruct and manage a diving operation, jump on the next plane and send a letter to my family from Colonia and see if they're clever enough to find me. I would give my family free diving lessons and dive trips.

See, that's the difference between you and I. I would charge for the lessons.

Asia?

BadNick 11-28-2008 10:39 AM

I actually had to look this up to make sure, but apparently I am in Europea.

So no to Asia.

BadNick 11-28-2008 07:31 PM

I'm in a major city, but I'd like you to also guess the sacred building I'm in.

I love you too, unc, but the national language here is not a romance language.

Go southeast young man, go southeast.

Tully Mars 11-29-2008 06:05 PM

Romania?

BadNick 11-29-2008 06:09 PM

Not Romania. Go further south.

Bulgaria?

albany?

BadNick 11-30-2008 12:23 PM

not Bulgaria, I'm still south of there.

not Albania...east of there.

uncle phil 11-30-2008 12:29 PM

is georgia on your mind?

BadNick 11-30-2008 07:33 PM

It is, but that's still not where I am. I'm west of Georgia. Tul was closer when he guessed Bulgaria. I think if you add up all the guesses and clues, you only have a couple choices as to where I could be.

good will clue: think "transcontinental"

Tully Mars 12-01-2008 03:00 AM

Macedonia?

uncle phil 12-01-2008 03:17 AM

turkey?

BadNick 12-01-2008 06:32 AM

OK unc, you got the country = Turkey.

Now keep in mind that I said I was in Europe and at a sacred place and you will be finding me very soon.

Tully Mars 12-01-2008 08:53 AM

In Istanbul?

BadNick 12-01-2008 09:47 AM

yes.

Tully Mars 12-01-2008 09:57 AM

Bosphorus Bridge? Maybe not sacred but it is transcontinental.

BadNick 12-01-2008 10:00 AM

Not the bridge. The "transcontinental" clue was just to get you to Turkey since it is partly in Europe and partly in Asia; that clue has no further bearing on where I am. So look for a holy place in the European section of Istanbul and you'll find me.

Tully Mars 12-01-2008 10:26 AM

Sancta Sophia?

BadNick 12-01-2008 12:53 PM

My prayers to St. Sophia are answered! You found me, Tul. You're up, go hide.

Hagia Sophia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2.../Aya_sofya.jpg

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...March_2008.jpg

Hagia Sophia is a former patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. It was the largest cathedral ever built in the world for nearly a thousand years, until the completion of the Seville Cathedral in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between A.D. 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, and was in fact the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site (the previous two had both been destroyed by riots). It was designed by two architects, Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. The Church contained a large collection of holy relics and featured, among other things, a 50 foot (15 m) silver iconostasis. It was the patriarchal church of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the religious focal point of the Eastern Orthodox Church for nearly 1000 years.

In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and Sultan Mehmed II ordered the building to be converted into the Ayasofya Mosque. The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels were removed, and many of the mosaics were eventually plastered over. The Islamic features — such as the mihrab, the minbar, and the four minarets outside — were added over the course of its history under the Ottomans. It remained as a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.

For almost 500 years the principal mosque of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many of the Ottoman mosques such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque of Istanbul), the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, and the Rüstem Pasha Mosque.

Although it is sometimes referred to as Saint Sophia (Greek for wisdom), the Greek name in full is Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, Church of the Holy Wisdom of God, and it was dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God rather than a specific saint named Sophia.

Si, si! I am in Huatulco.

Huatulco is known to many in Mexico as the Anti-Cancun. My neighbor is a pilot for Mexicana Air and he flys there once or twice a week. He tells me the locals in Huatulco started a campaign years ago to keep the Mexican government from over developing the area. Today it's a tourist area but mostly Mexican tourist. He told me one day he was talking to an American about places to go in Mexico and he mentioned Huatulco. After the conversation and after the American left he was approached by a lady from Huatulco who politely, but sternly, suggested in the future he suggest Cancun to any gringos asking.

Here's a tidbit from Wiki on the town and area-

Quote:

In 1984, FONATUR (Fondo Nacional de Turismo), a government agency dedicated to the development of tourism in Mexico, acquired 21,000 hectares of land to develop a tourism center, similar to that in Cancun. The existing population was relocated to Santa María Huatulco. The plan resulted in the improvement of roadways and other infrastructure. It also had populated areas interspersed with "green zones" to make the area more ecologically-minded. In fact, this is one of the cleanest developments in Mexico.

In addition to the beaches, one can explore and shop in the small communities of Huatulco, such as Santa Cruz, La Crucecita, or old Santa María Huatulco (the municipal seat). When doing so, one can travel between the communities by bus or taxi. The entire area has a "small town" feel about it and is rarely crowded with tourists with the exception of the Christmas and Semana Santa holiday periods.
Huatulco's Cacaluta Bay.

About 80% of all tourism in Huatulco is domestic in nature. Only about 20% of Huatulco's tourism is foreign, mainly because international air access is limited. Huatulco has a small international airport just 20 minutes from the main resorts in Tangolunda Bay. The peak season for foreign tourism is typically from December to April.

I guess "the existing population" wasn't thrilled to be relocated to Santa María Huatulco. "Hey, you know that beautiful beach you and your family have been living on for the last hundred or so years? Well we're going to build a resort there that you can only dream of staying at- hey! if you're nice we'll let you work there. We have a nice shack, err I mean house, yeah house that's what I mean. A really nice house several miles inland for you to live in."

Don't think that idea sold well. But I hear it's really nice area and the hotels are reasonable. Only real draw back is getting there, the airport is small and costly due to fee etc... It's easy and cheap to get to Oaxaca but from there it's a six hour bus ride.

Still going to go there someday.

Ok, you're up Mr. Phil.

Yeah, I'll blame it all on my neighbor "Gonzo."

Progreso, where I live, is kind of like the anti-Cancun too. But a couple days a week it's more Cancun then I'd like. The cruise ships arrive and the place fills with tourists. Most tourists leave their common sense at home, IMHO. I've had people on the beach ask me questions like "how you get those two big dogs on the ship?" or "how'd you get your truck down here?" At first I started answering with "you should see the size of my luggage" or "there's a time/space portal at the boarder, you just pull your vehicle in and they flip a switch and it instantly transports you anywhere in Mexico you want." After getting the reaction of "really?" several times I now plan my week around not being in town when the ship are.
