Good food for road trips ?

Hey,

I'm not sure which forum [living, traveling, here, gen] this belongs in; but I was wondering what's some good snacks/drinks/food for the road trips [eating in car most of the time, maybe with an occasional picnic].
The driving season is coming up, plus I'll be in the car for 5+ hrs to visit kalamazoo on friday.

Any recommendations ?

Granola bars, dry cereal, gatorade, bananas are some that i have so far.

Beef jerky works really well, it's relatively healthy and keeps your mouth busy longer so you don't eat it as fast. Trail mixes do very well too, but they're both dry foods so make sure you've got something to drink!

As far as drinks go anything is good if you like it and it has a screw-on cap, nothing sucks more than spilling a drink 2 hours into a 10 hour drive, they're almost impossible to clean up quickly, if you can clean them up at all, and then you get to deal with whatever you spilt it on for the rest of the trip!

Sandwiches are, and will always be, my weapon of choice when it comes to battling hunger on road trips. If you can bring a cooler or portable fridge along in the car with you, I'd recommend going with that.

There are, of course, the essential snacks such as jerky, candy (especially hard), and trail mix. Crackers (I recommend Wheat thins) and Easy Cheez is good, but especially hard if you're the driver.

Nuts, like almonds or cashues are pretty good, and if you get them unsalted and unroasted, they are very healthy and with a little water will keep your belly full so you don't eat junk. Plus, you don't have to worry about keeping them cold or getting crushed.

Peanut butter sandwiches are good--you don't even need a cooler...though your bread may get squished.

I really like Gardettos for a "snack mix" as it's crunchy...and fruit snacks--especially fruit leather, as it's good for you and not filled with artificial sugar.

I eat a lot of pretzel rods. One rod can last a while, but they aren't very healthy.

Meat rolls! You can get some deli meats and roll them, easily. Or just eat the slice straight.

My mom always used to make us eat those.

More fruit, if possible - that'll also go down much better if you're on the road for long periods of time. Using bagels for sandwiches is really good if you're worried about squishyness, as they seem to hold up better.

I LOVE fruit leather. Good stuff.

We usually bring easy to eat fruit that doesn't have peels/cores left over, like grapes, cheese and crackers, jerky, and drinks that have a screw top on and aren't gross if they get a little warm (no soda!).

No one has mentioned Fig Newtons? We always took them on college road trips.

My friend and i bought a loaf of french bread and a package of thin sliced lunchmeat. The night before our trip, she sliced the bread into thick pieces and put it in a ziplock bag. The enxt day in the car, the bread was too thick for a regular sandwhich, so we poked a few slices of turkey into the soft middle and folded it up like a taco. Worked really well. You may want to try frozen grapes or go-gurt (if it still exists). Go-gurt is yogurt in a tube that comes in lots of flavors. I only liked it frozen. Chex mix is my crunchy snack of choice. Frozen juice boxes (or capri suns) are good too because they double as ice packs and you can have slushies!

Hello?
Sunflower seeds!

I'll never take a road trip without them. Though, they're a bit messy.
Just don't eat too many of 'em, all that salt takes a toll on your tongue. :)

Twizzler Red Licorice sticks

popcorn?

i like to make my popcorn in a pan of olive oil. no butter, lightly salted & at home with a bit of parmesean sprinkled on, but the parmesean would be a bit too messy for the road. still good without the cheese. good for munching without a lot of calories.

fresh veggies are also great road food.
carrot sticks & celery being my favs for the road.

If you have a cooler you might want to bring a few wraps...they can be filled with whatever you like and they are nice and neat. If you feel really creative and have the time the night before try Thai spring rolls! Yum!

Peanut butter between 2 wheat crackers, about 10, wrapped in tin foil. Apples and bananas. You can drive from breakfast to supper without stopping for lunch. Of course you have to stop for calls of nature.

Plaid13 05-27-2005 05:19 AM

sandwiches made on bagels, beef jerkey and a apple. Whatever you do dont eat anything greasy or spicy noone wants to spend any time on those scary public toilets.

superredhead 06-08-2005 01:57 PM

That beef jerky they sell in 7-11 that has fruit in it and looks like vomit.

On my 13 hour bus ride I brought:
-hard candy
-peaches
-crispers
-plums

And we'd stop at these seedy roadside cafes for dinner. Don't pack anything that gives you gas...unless you have other people in the car and can lock the windows. (teehee)
