Favorite Chips?

So I just got done with a bag of Lay's Cheddar and Sour Cream chips (probably my favorite snack in the world) and I was wondering if there was any obscure chip flavors/brands that I should be eating and haven't tried. So let's hear it, and we'll up our cholesterol together!

darkure 04-20-2003 07:19 AM

I really like Krunchers Jalepeno chips.

kgb 04-20-2003 08:00 AM

I am a big fan of salt and vinegar potato chips. Oh, and Dill Pickles potato chips are good too.

Banginblaz 04-20-2003 08:08 AM

I used to be addicted to UTZ when they were only available in PA (I just dated myself....) but now that they went nation wide, I think they changed the recipe.

Anywho, I like me some cape cod, yukon gold chips.

And I have been itching to try those "blue" chips, even though they are made from purple potatoes, there is no such thing as a blue potatoe.

carnivore 04-20-2003 10:12 AM

I think my favourite of all time have to be Grandma Utz's Kettle Cooked Potato Chips. The ingredients are as follows:
Potatoes cooked in lard, salt, BHA, BHT.

They melt in your mouth. Sadly, they're not available in FL.

On the other side of the health coin, there are Terra mixed root vegetable chips. There's taro, beet, yucca, sweet potato, and a couple more that I never remember. They're really tasty and crisp. Expensive as hell though.

duckduck 04-20-2003 10:35 AM

You won't be able to try them, but I luv 'em. My sister takes potatoes, slices them so thin you can almost see thru them, deep fries them a lil bit, puts them on a baking sheet, sprinkles a hot sause mixture over them, and then bakes them 'til crispy. Needless to say, they don't last very long with me around ;)

snowy 04-20-2003 12:04 PM

All-Dressed Ruffles...I had them when I was in Canada over spring break...goes with a Molson very nicely. I want to see if I can find a place online that I can order All-Dressed Ruffles from, because they are delicious! Otherwise, I eat Cheddar and Sour cream Ruffles like they're going out of style. Anything cheese flavored is good for me :)

shotofgmplease 04-20-2003 12:34 PM

all time fave.....damn thats a hard one here....i've always been a fan of cheetoes, they rock! fritos are good too but i rarely eat them. and reg lays or utz are bomb aswell and doritoes almost of all types are good too. i just can't put my finger down on one....sorry.

SexyCat 04-20-2003 06:47 PM

Better Made potato chips are the best!

rashorangutan 04-21-2003 06:11 AM

As a kid i always liked salt and vinegar because none of the other kids liked them and they would try to mooch off me!!

Soda_BoB 04-21-2003 06:36 AM

I like chips potato chips, corn chips...chips are good.

Grondar 04-21-2003 06:41 AM

Sunchips (original flavor) without a doubt.

Just typing that makes me want to down a bag right now. :)

NbCal 04-21-2003 11:24 PM

Poore Brother's Jalapeno potato chips are my favorite.

greytone 04-22-2003 04:07 AM

Any kind of kettle chips, but the kind you can get in Maui are my favorite. That was probably because I was in Maui.

sierra2774 04-22-2003 06:04 AM

I love Cheddar Chex Mix. I bought a huge bag at Sam's club and cannot stay away from them.

Cynthetiq 04-22-2003 09:15 AM

never thought..

My god the internet is filled with niches.. I found this snack chip review place this morning.

They don't have http://www.zapps.com/ reviewed (not that they are my favorite but they are pretty tasty and crunchy)

I also have a love for Laura Scudder's BBQ from Southern California...haven't had them in years.

cheezhead 04-22-2003 11:51 AM

Mrs Fishers! From Rockford Ill

cub4life78 04-22-2003 11:27 PM

I'd also have to toss in a vote for salt and vinegar.

splck 04-23-2003 06:31 AM

Salt and pepper kettle chips

cdwonderful 04-23-2003 08:48 AM

cheezits does that count, being a cracker?

Mad_Gecko 04-23-2003 10:15 AM

Anyone remember "Charle's Chips" (I think, been a long time) used to come in a big ol tin.. Man best I ever had, can't get 'em in UK.

They got some weird ones over here -
Prawn Cocktail flavour
Baked Beans flavour
Tomato Sauce flavour
Pickled Onion flavour

I could go on and on... Blew my mind when I moved. But the weirdest one I ever saw, but never tried (wasn't brave enough) was a limited edition "Hedgehog" flavour.

PS Every word is true..

yabobo 04-24-2003 03:47 AM

My uncle and aunt owned the Charles Chips franchise in
central Florida for years until Musser brothers sold out.

I worked in the warehouse as a kid I could eat anything I wanted

:D :D :D From chips to cookies to the pretzels.

if you want them go to their web site. I would think they send them to the UK.:)

Hitchcock 04-24-2003 07:02 AM

This is a no-brainer for me: Doritos. My favorite flavors are...

Naco Cheesier
Cooler Ranch
Taco - I don't know if they still make it. All I know is that it's not available where I live and the last time I saw it was in California ten years ago.
When I was a kid they also had Sour Cream and Onion Doritos. Yummy!!

BubblegumTeflon 04-24-2003 06:58 PM

Salt and vinegar are all right but they kill my tongue after a while. There are these New England chips that come in S&V and Gold Russet flavors, both are very nice. For light(er) chips Baked Doritos are interesting and pretty good actually.

vermin 04-24-2003 08:16 PM

I don't know who makes (made?) them, but awhile back I got a bag of potato chips out of a machine that were grilled steak flavored. AWESOME!!
Unfortunately I can't find them around anywhere any more. So I'll throw a vote in for Garlic and Onion.

digby 04-25-2003 10:21 AM

back in the day (late 80's) keebler made some chips called 'Tato Skins. I haven't seen these in over a decade, but they're still my favorite

Mad_Gecko 04-26-2003 10:03 AM

yabobo

Damn lucky you were. I am gonna check the site out now I know they have one. Also like the pretzels, but didn't know they did cookies. mmmmm chips (or crisps, depending on location). Thanks 4 that!

vermin
They have a steak flavour over here (not friggin' surprising as they have a roast chicken flavour) and from what I recall I think they are a US co. that makes 'em. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the co., but I have to get food tomorrow and if I remember I'll check it out for ya.

R-Dubb604 04-26-2003 11:54 AM

My fav chip flavour used to be Ketchup, but now I cant get enough of these new Old Duch Rave Buffalo Wings chips. They are a little bit spicy if u like it, and it has a hint of ranch dressing. mmmmm sooo good

PS: I live in Canada, and I believe that in the USA u can't get ketchup flavour, and im not sure if u can even get old dutch brand. If anyone comes to canada try both of these flavours u will be impressed

crackpot 04-26-2003 10:18 PM

Do you have Miss Vickies in the States? Kind of kettle chip style I guess. Thickish and crunchy, gnarled looking, and they almost feel healthy, but you know damned well they're not? Well, I'm currently hot on the roasted garlic flavour.

Macheath 04-27-2003 12:26 AM

Spicy sweet potato kettle chips and Smiths salt and vinegar.

TonySpilotro 04-27-2003 06:42 AM

Note to Digby, Tato Skins are still around. White Hen (7-11 type store) carries them in the Chicagoland Area.

I just tried this, and it is unreal. Buy Cheddar Chex Mix and Cheetoes, and mix the cheetoes w/ the Chex mix. Totally ridiculous, you can't stop eating it. Put it out at your next party...

BBQ and Jalapeno Krunchers are definitely up there, and I love Salt & Vinegar.

As far as obscure chips, I once had some Coney Island chips that were great. They tasted like a hot dog w/ mustard and onions on it(Coney style obviously). Can't recall the maker of them.

Poore Brothers does make great flavors right now. These aren't chips, but try a bag of Snyder's Cheddar Pretzel pieces. You'll be addicted.

Finally, Jay's (Chicago brand) makes a chip called Hot Stuffs. Pretty awesome if you can find em. Alright, I'll stop now. I could go on all day...

zipper 04-27-2003 06:46 AM

UTZ Kettle chips...the best thing in PA!!

Mad_Gecko 04-27-2003 07:16 AM

Vermin

Yep, they called Royster's T-Bone Steak Flavour.

Here's a link, and I think there is ordering info on one of the frames.
Royster's

hotzot 04-27-2003 06:48 PM

Humpty Dumpty salt n vinegar

spectre 04-28-2003 07:35 AM

Plain Pringles. Would've been Pizza Hut Doritos, but they don't make those any more. :(

Daval 04-28-2003 09:43 AM

Ms Vickies Sea Salt and Malt Vinegar.

They are the awesome!

Zotz 04-28-2003 10:28 AM

Lays Kettle Cooked Chips are great!

bubbagumpshrimp 04-28-2003 09:44 PM

fienna 05-02-2003 06:18 AM

munchos munchos munchos. started to eat these way back in middle school - little did i know that the lunchlady would one day many years later sleep with my best friend, but that's besides the point.

we loved getting munchos, and to this day i'll still get that extracted and fried potato substitue paste crispy snack! :D

matteo101 05-03-2003 12:06 PM

Miss Vickys-sweet chile and sour cream chips...they are awesome

gamer715 05-06-2003 03:52 PM

I live close to the Canadian border.
They have the weirdest chips in Canada. Frito Lay alone has: ketchup (pretty good btw), Dill Pickle, Smokey Bacon, Roast Chicken, and Fries & Gravy.

My fav chip has got to be Lay's KC Masterpiece BBQ, fav snack is Chex mix.

oberon 05-09-2003 11:20 AM

salt & vinegar pringles rock.
also like chex mix style (several vendors make these, gardetto & chex are the best).
sun chips are ok too.

personally i try not to eat too much chips though, they aren't very good for you.

HockeyGuy 05-15-2003 04:43 PM

Gotta be eitehr Pringles Salt and Vinegar, walkers pepper and salt, or ruffles all dressed... mmm all dressed is the best for the barbeques!

sipsake 05-16-2003 07:54 AM

Zapp's Cajun Craw-taters. Best. Chip. Ever.

Used to only be available in Louisiana and the southeast. Now I've seen them pretty wide spread.

Zapp's Gator Taters (pickle flavored) are also fantastic.

suviko 05-23-2003 05:58 AM

Sour cream & onion.

Chips are my most annoying bad habit after I got rid of smoking. :(

kalashnikov 08-16-2003 12:06 PM

Favorite chips?

I have started eating from a container of Pringles (sour cream and onion) and these are so damn good. I mean, unbelievably good. Theories of why they are so delicious:
a) Sour cream and onion. duh.
b) The special tube container
1) Keeps the chips unbroken so they are more pleasurable to eat, and you don't spill crumbs all over the place.
2) the hard container allows for thinner chips, meaning more surface area per chip, so you get more flavor.
Clearly, once you pop, the fun won't stop. Unless we are talking about sex, in which case, once you pop the fun is generally over. Try and have the un before you pop.
I also love Crunchers. The crunchiness is awesome and they are oily as a freshly beached whale.
My third fav is Ranchero's, I think the brand is a bit more obscure but they are mighty fine tortilla chips.

Other favorites? Least favorites?

:D ****crunchcrunchcrunch***

collide 08-16-2003 12:25 PM

Lay's original potato chips!
They're nice and greasy and salty and addictive. It's my all time favorite next to Lay's vinager and oil.

Amethyst 08-16-2003 03:30 PM

I love cooler ranch doritios. They are the best chip in the world.

MacGnG 08-16-2003 06:14 PM

They are still sold in some places.
I've seen them in vending machines on the east coast and as far west as Indiana and sometimes you can find them in the warehouse clubs (Sam's Club, etc). They have the TGI Friday's restaurant name on them now, but are still the same chips.

Tex 08-17-2003 02:16 PM

Whenever I feel the need for a nice snack, I always bust out this recipe...

1 big plate of Doritos
1 whole lemon
1 bottle of Tapatio hot sauce

Put em together and you get an awesome snack. :)

CyCo PL 08-17-2003 02:18 PM

Mmm, kettle cooked barbecue chips.

JohnnyRock 08-18-2003 12:20 PM

Doritos for me!!!

Averett 08-19-2003 09:59 AM

Mmmmm... Old Dutch Dill Pickle chips. Makes me want to take another trip to Canada.

seizei 08-19-2003 12:21 PM

Sweet Potato Chips are sooooooooooooooooo good.... I believe the brand I've tried is called Kalbi or Calbi.... damn international food market stopped carrying them! Bastards!!!

RemyLebeau97 08-20-2003 03:01 PM

Wavy Lays are my fav. chip

mew 08-27-2003 07:43 PM

Mm~! I Love Munchos though they do tend to put too much salt on them and theyre very greasy, but oh yeah its worth it baby.

I also like Lays BBQ chips-theyre not hot or peppery like other bbq chips (which i dislike) and theyre kinda sweet tasting..I know it sounds kinda gross, but tastes like Bar B Barns Ribs..Yummy!!!!

collide 08-28-2003 10:36 AM

I have discovered that Lay's Gaucamole chips are also very munchable. :)

MuTuaL 08-28-2003 12:05 PM

if i had to choose a favorite chip it would have to be those flaming hot cheetos, they're damn addicting

Ripsaw 08-29-2003 08:05 AM

New York Deli Jalapeno chips.
I can eat four bags at once.

Exodus 08-31-2003 11:12 PM

I like Poore Brothers Salt and Vinegar... is good stuff.

Double D 08-31-2003 11:48 PM

Garden of Eatin' Blue Tortilla chips
I have to do low sodium--these have astonishingly little salt and they taste spectacular.

What are *dressed* chips, btw?

Mr. Spacemonkey 09-01-2003 04:34 PM

I'm gonna have to go with the chedder sun chips. Those are awesome!

frankx 09-02-2003 11:19 AM

My favorite chips are local - Zapp's Cajun Crawtators.

During a recent trip to Canada, I had the opportunity to have some Lay's ketchup flavored chips and fell in love with em! It was the first and last time I have seen them. Do they sell them here?

Canada has an such an eclectic assortment of chips!

What's the deal with that?
I haven't found any of their chips here, tho' (Chicagoland).

I'm still wondering what exactly, *dressed* chips are  .

koli70 09-02-2003 06:57 PM

Sour cream and cheddar? I think thats it, I dont remember though, I rarely eat chips.

sigma1042 09-08-2003 01:01 PM

i like the "limited edition" Lays chicago "loaded baked potato" chips or something

stldickie 09-08-2003 01:29 PM

Lay's Hickory....AWESOME

Cobalt_60 09-08-2003 03:16 PM

My favorite. Potato Skins. Always loved those.

Booboo 09-08-2003 08:57 PM

I dont think theres any way I could pick a favorite.. depends on what I feel like at any given time I guess.. Some of my Favorites Include:

Most kinds of Kettle chips, BBQ, Chedder and sour cream, and recently I discovered Lays Monterey PepperJack .. they are really good, new I think. They also have a New Loaded Baked potatoe that I havn't tried yet but looks good.

Thanks seizei! That was my best guess, but I didn't want to get stuck with a bag of bad-tasting chips.
