EGGNOG--it's a poll!

This is one of the weird phenomina of the food world, eggnog. You really only see the stuff at Christmas time. If you're like me I love the stuff at Christmas, but can't really imagine drinking it at any time of the year. Why is this? Can you think of any other food or drink that you really like, but only two weeks out of the year? Maybe pumpkin pie falls into this category was well. So, vote for your stance on the Eggnog issue, and then throw your two cents in on weird food instances like this.

Happy Holidays All!!

Well I put my vote in on the like it, but only at Holiday time. I can't explain this though, so that's why I'm hoping all of your insight will make this oddity clearer.

I used to love eggnog when my grandma made it. That was a LONG time ago and I can't make it like she does, so having it only during the Holiday Season is fine by me. And if I remember right (which I may not) it seems to me as though she used to cook hers, before chiling it off. I do know we always drank it cold, but is was frothy or something - different somehow, that's for sure.

I'll agree on the pumpkin pie and I would add - boiled eggs at Easter. After a solid week of egg salad sandwiches, hard boiled eggs and deviled eggs, I can not eat the damned things again until the folllowing spring. I have a similar issue with cranberries - I guess they have to be served with turkey. We raise turkeys, so we eat them year round, almost always served with cranberries, but I don't know if I have ever eaten cranberries when turkey was not being served.

I'd drink it year round if I could. It's weird... it seems like it should be gross, but I love it.

I detest eggnog. I think it is one of the most disgusting concoctions known to mankind. I think pumpkin pie is definitely a seasonal food for me; I only eat it at Thanksgiving, and usually one one piece. That's good enough for me.

See, I'll drink eggnog at any given time if I am in the mood and I made it myself. Storebought stuff is like drinking liquid butter with spices. If I am going to eat pure fat, make it bacon for me.

I didn't really know what eggnog is, so I looked up some recipes on epicurious.com

This was the best one, with a 96% approval rating:

Quote:
BALTIMORE EGGNOG

12 eggs, separated
2 cups superfine sugar
1 pint brandy
1/2 pint light rum
1/2 pint peach brandy
3 pints milk
1 pint heavy cream
Nutmeg

Beat the egg yolks and sugar together until thick. Slowly stir in the brandy, rum, peach brandy, milk and cream. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled and pour into a punch bowl. Beat the egg whites until stiff and fold gently into the eggnog. Grate a little nutmeg on top and serve in 4-ounce punch glasses.

Personally, I don't think a drink with raw eggs, milk and cream, sugar, and booze all together sounds like a very good combination.

The eggs don't have to be raw. I likes me the eggnog though, although I don't normally consider drinking it aside from at Christmas. Cranberries and pumpkin pie can go straight to hell and never come back as far as I'm concerned though.

I used to hate the stuff til I met an old boyfriend's 84 year old dutch foster mom who had the BEST recipe. I only make it at the holidays because it is so smooth it's too easy to overindulge.

Mammy's Eggnog

6 large or 8 small separated eggs
2 cups sugar
1 gal milk
1/2 fifth brandy
1/2 fifth rum
dash whiskey
nutmeg to taste
2 large mixing bowls

The recipe calls for mixing the sugar and yolks together, but we found that it clumps, so mix the yolks and dash of whiskey together and add sugar.
Add milk, then rum and brandy.
Beat the egg whites until light and fluffy.
Fold into the milk mixture, bottle (you need two milk jugs), shake and add nutmeg.
Enjoy!

I'm another alcoholic nogger. Never have the stuff by itself.

I recall some comic who didn't like it suggested "nog" is made from the outer membrane of infected chicken eggs. Nice to see a couple recipe's here with better ingredients.

That Mammy's eggnog sounds alcoholic enough for me to REALLY enjoy it.
