Favorite Wine? (Jordan Cabernet is mine.)

The best wine I've ever had is Jordan Cabernet hands down. Anyone have any wine tasting class advice?

Minx 05-12-2003 02:07 PM

Gray Monk - Pinot Auxerrois is one of my favorites (or their Reisling). Can't go wrong with any of their wines usually. Hard to get but very very good is Perle of Zala from a tiny BC winery called House of Rose. Mmmmmm nummy!
Oh please....don't get me started on wine - it's one of my favorite things! :p

JadziaDax 05-12-2003 05:06 PM

any of the different types of Reisling out there. Generally, I have found 3 different "flavors" of Reisling (apple, pear, apricot). I generally don't like the really sweet wines, but as for Reisling, it's not overpoweringly sweet.

Why don't you guys try Yellowtail from Australia! They make a really good Shiraz, a Zinfandel, a Merlot and a really great Cabernet Sauvignon - They are real reasonable and are really good.

Had a delicious Barbera d'Asti tonight. Don't remember the name, but I just recommend Barberas in general. I haven't had a bad one yet.

ThatOnePerson 05-19-2003 10:28 AM

i really like anything from bonnie doon. they are nicely priced and tasty. i also like this greek wine called "retsina"(spelling??) its got pine resin in it which makes it a light refreshing drink in the summer.

Mad_Gecko 05-19-2003 02:48 PM

Trying Parallele "45" a really tasty French Cotes du Rhone that is also the best deal I've found in a while. $6.99 on sale!

***edit: This stuff is really good and I have a nice buzz after 2 1/2 glasses.

mtsgsd 05-19-2003 05:48 PM

Black Opal from Australia is good, but our favorite is Ecco Domani.
We're especially fond of the Merlot. LOL man, that sounds sooo pretentious when I go back and read it! seriously, it's good stuff.

Atanvarno 05-20-2003 11:25 AM

La Fiole du Pape: very good, rather strong
For a light one Faustino I('94 Grand Reserva :)) is always good. Not an 'oh my god'-wine tho.

Last time I was in Paris I picked up a couple of good ones as well.
Chateau du Chartillion (Cru Bourgeiouse)
Chateau Larosey
both 2000, both Medoc.

rather cheap but good one is Mouton Cadet.
Campo Viejo, Marques de Caceres from Rioja ... pretty good :)

Hi Atan,
Good to see you here! :)

Have had Faustino, it's good as a party wine. Might try out Fiole if I can find it.

Mouton Cadet.. I have hard the name before. I might look that one up.

Atanvarno 05-24-2003 03:43 AM

Bah! Couldn't stay out ;)

as I said, the Faustino is a good allround wine, works for everyone to anything :)
La Fiole du Pape from Chateauneuf du Pape; Rhone; France; 80% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 7% Mourvedre, 6% Cinsault; 13.5%
Mouton Cadet from Baron Philippe de Rothschild; Bordeaux; France; Cab. Sauv, Cab. Franc, Merlot; 12%

Yeah, figured from du Pape the region. I don't like French wines as much as Spanish, but Grenache gives the taste of Spain to Papes. My favorite grapes are Tempranillo, Grenache & Merlot, in that order. Checked out Fiola and found it for 21,2 euros. If it's bad, I will mock you mercilessly forever. :)

Mouton cadet is 10e and the description says "pleasing and flexible"?? That doesn't tell me much what it tastes like. :I CS isn't my fav grape, maybe I just haven't even tried to acquire a taste for Bordeaux or Bourgogne. Well, what do I lose by trying..

I have been trying to talk Tane into buying a 150 euros vintage Rothschild with me. We have had the competition (who will drink a better wine for more stupid reasons and poor company) long enough and could end it by that. :)

Atanvarno 05-24-2003 08:30 AM

Hehe, I like the Pape, if you don't it's you there's something wrong with, not the wine :p And hey, don't complain, it's 30 Euro here ;)

Yes, the Cadet is a cheap but ok wine :) CS isn't my favourite either, but I'm a Merlot fan :) Anyways, here's the info from Norwegian Wine Monopole: "Pure red colour, fruity with acidic(?) red berries. Volume: 2/3; Garve (ehh? the thingy that comes from the oak): 2/3; fruitiness: 2/3. Alcohol: 12%; Sugar: 2 g/l; acid: 0 g/l"

Hey, if you ever buy that, tell me so I can come over ;) Though I must say that a 150 Euro wine is waaaay above my league/wallet ;)

Tophat665 05-24-2003 04:50 PM

Dude, Nighttrain, all the way.

Seriously though, I know diddly squat about wine, but I do know I like a good reisling, I like a good port, and Phillips night harvest Pinot Noir Vin Gris (Black Peter's Grey Wine :) ) is very tasty.

Everyone knows the Grange Hermatige is the best Red. Rosemount Roxburgh Chardonnay white. Both Aussie drops of course.

rockzilla 06-05-2003 10:31 AM

The best wine tasting advice I can think of is, take notes, geeky, maybe, but you'll never forget the name of that awesome wine you had the other night, or what it tastes like. Just make a note of the name, the vintage, the price maybe and a bit about what you tasted (light, or heavy, dry or sweet, and so on).

Some of my favorites are La Framboiserie (as the name might suggest, a raspberry-tinged burgundy). Beaujolais (or Gamay Noir) served slightly chilled is a great light summertime red that'll put a smile on anyones face. For whites, I like grassy Sauvignon Blancs, mostly from BC or New Zealand. And nothing makes you feel more like a millionaire than drinking champagne.

A couple more general rules, stay away from non-vintage wines and wines without some sort of appelation, pretty much every wine producing country has a quality control board and a wine has to meet a few requirements before they'll let the winemaker put the name of the country or region on the label, if there's no seal of approval it's probably made from low-grade leftovers, "super tuscan" wines are the exception, but if you're spending $100+ on a bottle of wine, you don't need our advice.

And don't be afraid to ask your friendly neighbourhood wine merchant for suggestions, they usually know what they're doing, I used to be one, boy I miss the days of having to drink free wine all the time.
