Favorite Breakfasts
So, for a wedding present in August, my husband and I received an awesome waffle iron, and ever since, we've been making waffles on a regular basis (in fact, hubby is making waffles right now). Last weekend, we visited friends and while we didn't take our waffle iron, the talk of making waffles and my mention of yeasted waffles made my friend want to make us yeasted waffles for breakfast.
Here is the yeasted waffle recipe: Belgian Yeast Waffles: King Arthur Flour You can choose to prepare the batter for these waffles and cook it after an hour, but we prefer to let the batter rest overnight in the fridge, where it develops some real depth of flavor, yeasty and rich. As you'll read in the comments below, some readers aren't fond of this "yeasty/fermented" flavor; if you think you might fall into this camp, add 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder to the recipe (in addition to the yeast), and cook after just a 30-minute rest; don't refrigerate overnight. 1 1/2 cups (12 ounces) lukewarm milk 6 tablespoons (3 ounces) butter, melted 2 to 3 tablespoons (1 3/8 to 2 ounces) maple syrup, optional 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs 2 cups (8 1/2 ounces) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 1 1/2 teaspoons instant yeast (To adjust yeast quantity to use active dry yeast, add an extra 1/4 tsp plus 1/8 tsp ADY to the 1 1/2 tsp called for in the recipe). Combine all of the ingredients in a large bowl, leaving room for expansion; the mixture will bubble and grow. Stir to combine; it’s OK if the mixture isn’t perfectly smooth. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rest at room temperature for 1 hour; the mixture will begin to bubble. You can cook the waffles at this point, or refrigerate the batter overnight to cook waffles the next day. Preheat your waffle iron. Spray with non-stick vegetable oil spray, and pour 2/3 to 3/4 cup batter (or the amount recommended by the manufacturer) onto the center of the iron. Close the lid and bake for the recommended amount of time, until the waffle is golden brown. It took us 5 to 6 minutes, using our 7" Belgian-style (deep-pocket) waffle iron. Serve immediately, or keep warm in a 200°F oven. Serve with berries and whipped cream, if desired. Yield: about four 7" round Belgian waffles. Another favorite breakfast of mine can be found in this video: How about you? What are some of your favorite breakfasts? Recipes appreciated! |
I adore a good biscuit with honey and some fruit. If it's cold outside, I dig a pancake or two with honey and a veggie sausage patty or a few thin slices of rashers. The thing about waffles is that I despise belgian-style waffles... by this I mean the depth of the wells in the waffles. I've looked everywhere, but I cannot find another one that makes them more like the eggo-style, for lack of a better comparison, I had one about 8 years ago. I like my waffles thin and super crisp. If I could find one of those, I'd have waffles every day.
But, my favorite of all time has to be crepes with lemon juice and powdered sugar. S loves biscuits and straight up southern sausage gravy, any kind of eggs benedict, an Irish breakfast if hung over (two eggs, potatoes, white and black puddings, rashers, baked beans, grilled tomatoes and a chunk of brown or soda bread), or pancakes. I'm pretty boring with my breakfasts, but I prefer the savory flavors that come with lunch and dinner. |
Growing up, Biscuits and gravy.
Now.. that is still a strong favorite but i am a sucker for good french toast. And actually.. I think part of the reason I enjoy both so much is they are not in my cooking reportoire at the moment. Hopefully I can correct that soon. |
Eggs Benedict and a Bloody Mary! :D
|
Oooooh, french toast!
Here's how I do mine.... To make 4 slices: 2 whole eggs + one egg white splash of milk 1/2 t each of freshly grated nutmeg and cinnamon 1/4 t of pure vanilla extract Mix all ingredients together very well, "scrambling" the eggs and pour into a pasta bowl or other flat dish with sides. Turn on pan to medium, oil with canola or other mild veg oil (avoid olive oil, it funks the flavor). One pan is warm, place one slice of good whole wheat bread in bowl and shush around for about 3 - 5 seconds, flip and repeat. Lift and shake a bit, to get off drips then transfer to warm skillet. Toast for 2 minutes, then flip (depending on the heat of the pan and your desired darkness). I like to top with honey, S likes brummel & brown and maple syrup. :) |
noodle--my friends had a regular waffle iron, not a Belgian waffle iron, and the yeasted waffles made with said waffle iron were delicious.

Where did she get it?!?!

My favourite breakfast is cold (leftover) pad Thai. I like it better than eating it hot and fresh the night before. I don't know what it is. I just love it. I don't have a recipe because it's something we normally order.
I'm also one of those weird types who enjoy hot meals not normally associated with breakfast. However, I do enjoy eggs benedict, among other classic breakfast meals. I've never had an Irish breakfast, but I think it would be a blast. I like the idea of congee for breakfast, though I've never really explored that option. |
Breakfast is one of my favorite meals to eat out. Pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, biscuits.... all good! Especially from Shoney's Inn. :D
Just don't forget my coffee and I am happy. |

I love breakfast.
I don't think I could choose a favourite. I kind of go through phases of what I want to eat for breakfast. Here are some of my favourites: Scrambled eggs on toast (made like the video above... trust me, you will see the difference, especially if you add just a little grated Parmesan cheese towards the end). Pancakes with homemade compote (don't settle for pre-mix out of the box, scratch pancakes are where it's at) Bircher Muesli (I prefer this over classic cooked oatmeal) Diner Specials (2-3 eggs over easy, bacon or sausage, fried potatoes (not hash browns), toast, juice and coffee) - it's all about the location Butter Kaya Toast and half boiled eggs (Singapore classic) Omelettes Of course, bacon goes with all of this if you wish and good, strong coffee is a must. In fact, the bare bones breakfast is toast with peanut butter and jam and a coffee. If it came down to it, I could live on peanut butter (in fact, at one time I almost did). I could eat breakfast for every meal and be content. |
I love a good breakfast casserole/strata/savory bread pudding--whatever you want to call it, and I love them for all meals, not just breakfast. Here is a post from TheKitchn on breakfast casseroles:

Scrambled eggs on sourdough toast with tomatoes and mushrooms would probably be my favorite (with maybe some smoked salmon). I grew up on sourdough bread in the bay area and eating it always makes me feel like I'm home.

If I'm going out for breakfast, I want scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast. When I'm at home and it's just me, I love oatmeal with raisins or 2 slices of whole wheat toast spread with a smashed avocado and sprinkled with a little pepper. If I have a fresh tomato or some turkey bacon on hand, I'll put the tomato/bacon on the toast as well. Hubby and son both love pancakes, waffles, and french toast, so we have those on Saturday mornings. I prefer a fruit compote on mine, they usually have syrup. I love breakfast, it's my favorite meal of the day.

Eggs Grandpa style:
Tear four slices of buttered toast into bite size pieces. Place four eggs over easy on top of the toast & mush them together. Yes, I get funny looks when I do this is at a public eatery. I ask for extra napkins. |
I'm a bit of a breakfast ho. Anytime, anywhere. Eggs, pancakes, waffles, bacon, oh my.
My ultimate fave is shrimp 'n grits while dining amongst chickens and cats. Huge pink Key West shrimp with subtle Vermont cheddar grits and awesome fresh toast only like they make it here. At home, it's my smooshed egg on bread, a/k/a eggs in a basket. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/49/14...3d8c2da3_b.jpg |

Conversion Chart Waffles are great, my husband often makes them, but I don't like to eat anything sweet/sugary in the mornings. I prefer juice first, then bread with ham and cheese and cup of coffee to get me going. |

My favorite breakfast by far are breakfast burritos and coffee.
However some of my all time favorite breakfasts (and favorite meals even) have to be biscuits and gravy, Lucky Charms/Corn Pops, cinnamon french toast, and steak and eggs. |
Pork chile verde with eggs and a couple of tortillas is a great breakfast. Coffee with cream.
Corncakes with heavy cream and sugar instead of syrup. Or real maple syrup. With sausage, ham, or bacon on the side. Milk to drink. Steelcut oatmeal, either hot or cold, with cream and brown sugar. Berries instead of brown sugar sometimes. Coffee or hot chocolate. This is a great start if I plan a meatless day. Quote:

Poached eggs (medium) with toast, hash browns and bacon. Served with coffee.
this has been my fav for years but recently I went to a local restaurant (Fran's in toronto) and had some corned beef hash. I love this stuff. Simple enough to make at home: - peel and chop 4 medium sized potatoes into 1 inch-ish cubes - microwave in a covered bowl for 5 mins, stirring every two mins - fry in butter (okay, I've used canola oil too) in a large frying pan, with one chopped onion - keep frying until the potatoes start to get crispy (about 5 mins on medium-high) - meanwhile, open a can of corned beef (the kind with the key) - slice beef, then chop into 1 inch-ish sized cubes - add to the frying potatoes & mix in with pepper to taste (note: this meal doesn't require any salt to be added) - smooth down the mixture with your spatula, and allow the bottom crisp up. - flip over to crisp up the top - tip into a bowl when cooked to your personal preference - eat with more pepper or ketchup and eggs. mmmmmmm |
My favorite is a fat bagel from David's Bagels on Manhattan's East Side. Toasted well-done, with scallion cream cheese and a huge coffee. I dream about them, I love them so much. But because I don't want to be asleep by 10:30am and do not live in NY, I avoid them and stick to proteins. Second fav is scrambled eggs with ham and cooper sharp american. I order eggs "benny" so much, that we are on a nickname basis.
Another classic - Moons Over My Hammie |

I <3 breakfast. The most important part is the coffee but after that I like: - fried potatoes with lots of veggies and egg whites on top (favorite as of late, happy to post more info but it's kind of self explanatory) - eggs Benedict (again with egg whites, yes I know there's yolk in the sauce) - breakfast sandwiches with ham or bacon if I'm feeling frisky. I love weekends now because it's the only two days I get to make a full breakfast. Usually by the time I finish there's no time for lunch! |
Bacon waffles with a side of bacon.
Biscuits and gravy are a close second, but the gravy plays havoc with my stomach. |
All I can prepare is 2 eggs, sausages and a toasted bagel! Not awake enough to make more complex meals
|
I've been cooking pancakes for breakfast, I'm thinking about adding them to my perfect breakfast.
