What are your Food Goals?

Are you the kind of person that forgets what you ate for breakfast yesterday?
I am.

What are your food goals?
Have you ever...
kept a detailed food journal
planned meals for crowds
watched what you ate
cooked for your family
focused on money-saving meals

Tell us about your food goals, past or present. Share your current goal, whatever it may be. Map out your plan, share your shopping lists, count your calories, keep a log. Feel free to share it all right here. Show your support for others' goals by relating similar experiences or swapping recipes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Food has never been something that I monitor very closely. I eat when I am hungry, and cook whatever suits me at the time. I've cooked bland meals for my flavor-despising mother, prepared rich feasts for groups of 30+, and spent copious amounts of free-time reading recipes in an attempt to better understand flavor combination and ethnic trends. Yet, in the past few weeks I've come to realize that rice, corn flakes, and convenience foods have become my main dietary components. Sure, I'll take some extra effort and come up with something delicious for a potluck or a special meal, but these have amounted to no more than a real meal once a week. I'm fed up with it. I want to eat better.

I've mapped out dinners for the next month: a list by day, paired with recipes. I've focused on quick vegetarian meals with lots of flavor and few ingredients. Hopefully I'll stick to it. I'll keep you updated.

Right now, my goal is to eat as much natural* food as possible, and to eat a wide variety. I'm trying to focus on the 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables, as that is my Achilles heel. I'm okay on the other aspects (whole grains, etc.).

To meet this goal, I need to start cooking more. As it is now, I subsist on convenience food and the occasional meal cooked by my S.O. I'm always so reluctant to cook because I'm the one who does the dishes. I need to be less lazy.

I've done all of the things you've mentioned.

There are a number of general food "rules" I try and follow:
1) Keep a well-stocked pantry.
2) Buy food in the bulk section (rice, beans, grains, spices, etc) where feasible
3) Eat at home 75% of the time.
4) Baking from scratch is never a bad thing.

I'm more of a planner and my husband is more of a pantry cooker, so I've found by keeping a well-stocked pantry, we're both happy. If I come across a recipe I like, chances are I have 75% of the ingredients on hand already, and that well-stocked pantry means that he can look at what we have and come up with something just as delicious completely on the fly. Buying in the bulk section feeds into rule 1; it makes having that well-stocked pantry that much cheaper. Eating at home is obviously more frugal than eating out. As for the last rule, I really feel the baked goods I make myself taste better than those bought from the store or made from a mix. There are certainly some bakeries around here that make some excellent pastry, but I also figure baking my own stuff means that I'm putting effort into it that earns me a slice of cake or a muffin. And it's fun. Plus, I love shocking my husband's grandmother with my baked-from-scratch goodies; she's a fan of mixes because they're cheaper but I just can't stand the taste.

I'd like to hardly ever eat red meat. Ever.

Unfortunately I'm married to an omniverous Caveman, (who never seems to feel full.) But I have been doing better, day by day!

Also, I'd like to take time for a juice fast once in a while, like 1-2 days every month. Guess I need to be stronger and just go ahead and do those on my own.

Our household goal is to make sure we plan our menu for the week. This way we only buy what we need.

We try to cook everything from scratch, with very few exceptions.

Update: Well, I bombed. Made it a few days, but last night I ordered pizza rather than making eggplant parm. I'll give myself a bit of slack because I'm ill.

Hopefully this month-in-advance menu idea will serve us well. My husband seems to be excited about the idea of knowing what we need and planning ahead.

Use your freezer. Next time you make a batch of soup, freeze the leftovers. Making beans from scratch? Cook a double batch and freeze the other portion. If you're making refried beans or soup, you won't notice the slight change in texture after they defrost.

We also keep bags of frozen stir-fry mix and other assorted veggies on hand for when I don't feel like cooking something elaborate. It's always easy to cook rice and vegetables.

And yes, you should absolutely give yourself a bit of slack when ill--I hope it was a good pizza!

They have cookbooks specifically geared towards freezer cooking. I should check these out.

omg... I wouldn't even attempt that. In fact, I would like to do the opposite, and try the cuts of meat that i haven't been exposed to yet, in the best ways to cook them:

I have not eaten a porterhouse steak, not sure what it is but want to try it.
Tri Tip steaks are my current fav, trying to get the right amount of rareness is a challenge

I was watching Master Chef last night, where they were cooking a rack of venison ribs. they looked astounding, perfect blend of rare to med rare colour.

I am on the search for the ideal steak tartar. The first time I had it was in a restaurant in Kingston Ontario (Chez Piggy) where it was beautifully presented, and remains my comparator. The worst was a Korean restaurant in Fort Lee New Jersey, which served it half frozen.

the search for a great burger continues. current styles include using ciobatti buns, and adding sprouts. I like this, but am on a blue cheese kick as a condiment. I would like to match up the best experience which is Stilton. another on cheese that was good and close to Stilton, was Cheshire blue. Yum.

Other meat I love is tuna that has been seared. I've had this twice (once at a Baton Rouge - not so great and once at a hot stone restaurant - really good) and am looking for a transcendant experience with that dish.

Leto... try the bymark burger at Bymark. Apparently it's the best in gourmet burgers.

A goal I've made this year is that I want to try and explore more of Singapore's hawker food. There are some legendary hawkers on the island that I still haven't visited. I am missing out. Last friday, I took a trip to Geylang Surai for some of the best Hokkien Mee I've ever tasted.

I'm cutting out all factory-farmed meats. I stopped eating beef a little while back, but I found this place called Leftcoast that has grass-fed, local, responsible/ethical meat for like $10/lb. I don't eat beef as often, of course, but when I do I know I'm paying a fair price and I'm not eating tortured meat.

I wish I could commit to being a vegetarian or even a vegan, but I love meat.
