cooking in a microwave

So, I dont have an oven or hob at the moment and wont for a few months. I bought myself a micorwave for 30 quids. I havent used one before, but the first couple of meals I have been quite impressed. I didnt realise you could make so much in them, I always had it in my mind it was only for "TV Dinners"

But yesterday I made myself a curry

Rice (boil in bag type)
Cooked that first and left to stand

Then mixed half a tin of baked beans with half a tin of chick pea's.
Add some balti powder, some paprika, some pepper, some corriander (all dried powder types)
Mix up well
A few sultana's
Gave it 6 mins at 700W


Came out lovely.

Anyone else have any microwave recipes?

I don't own a microwave, but I did recently pass by an article entitled something akin to "10 Great Recipes you can accomplish through your Microwave"; sadly, though, I don't recall where it was hosted, even if I did just find it a few days ago.

Somehow, by lucky strikes and boredom, I came across the article again.

Now that I've read it, it doesn't contain much, if any, recipes, though it does detail what you can do with a microwave, if need be.

* 3 tablespoons Sugar
* 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa
* 1 large egg
* 2 tablespoons Milk
* 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil

Making only one serving eliminates that problem. Plus, it is kind of fun for kids if any are around.

Microwave cooking is... a unique beast. It's a pretty interesting thought puzzle to try and cook things by rotating them through standing waves which basically boil the water in them from the inside out.

Which means at least in my experience that the old nukebox is amazing for steaming high water content foods like vegetables or rewarming things like leftover chinese depending on what it is. On the other hand it fails utterly at handling breads, pastas, and dryer meats for anything more than a handful of seconds just to warm them up even though it can thaw frozen bread (even pita) very nicely.

Outside of prepackaged microwaveables I've had the most luck with either steaming things in various containers or abusing the bowl-over-plate method with very short bursts to reheat something that's been in the fridge for a while (penne for example...)

Somethingawful tried a bunch of microwave cake recipes once, the general consensus was that it's exactly the sort of thing you'd expect people to goad each other into eating on the internet.

I got a laugh from my wife as I came into the kitchen with this....in all of 3 minutes, I got the last laugh as the cake was GREAT...A little whipped
cream and instant desert anytime...

I found you can make a half decent tomato sauce, but half is the optimum word

A can of tomato's, mashed
some powdered garlic
some powdered basil
grated skin of a lemon
like one splash of tobasco sauce
two mushrooms, very much chopped up

Give the bastard 6 mins and then a good stir

It aint the best, but you can mix it up with some of that pasta you get in a pack and just warm up in the microwave, pour a little grated cheese that you get in a plastic container on.

Its tolerable.

I once had a thanksgiving turkey that was "cooked" in the microwave....The funny part is the lady doing the cooking had a top of the line range she could have used. This was at a neighbours house years ago and to be polite we never said a word but yuck.

She used liquid smoke and I could not get my mind around the fact that this meat came from the microwave. Too me the microwave is about reheating and not cooking. i shudder at that turkey...ewww.
