While taking the extra three minutes to research my post, (as well as the prerequisite five minutes already invested into its creation) I've come to learn the artist responsible for these bento creations.

Her name is Maki Ogawa, ans she is a bento designer.
Her personal website / blog is immensely popular, and she is talented and well-liked enough
to have published a book on her extraordinarily-detailed creations - have a look for yourself.

Here is a parting illustration of her talents and creative vision (that goes into her penchant for "playing with her food")

Chef Wylie Dufresne on science you can NOM - Boing Boing [article ; video]

synopsis:
Quote:

Love this series of interview clips on the Big Think, where Wylie Dufresne talks about how science has influenced—and improved—cooking over the past couple decades, and why molecular gastronomy is about more than high-falutin' restaurants where dinner comes in the form of foam.

In this clip, Dufresne uses science to explain why you shouldn't sear a steak, and how to make your cooked veggies come out colorful and bright.

Lady Gaga's meat dress outfit that she wore at the VMA's this past weekend reminded me of Gabriela Rivera (see below) covering her body with raw meat.

Gabriela Rivera's video forms part of a controversial exhibition at Santiago's Sala Juan Egenau gallery. She said: "My work is a metaphor for the relationship that people have with themselves every day when they look in the mirror."...

I was especially attracted to Lady Gaga's steak hat. But since I'm from Philadelphia, home of the Philly Cheesesteak, I would have liked it better if she just wore this cheesesteak hat:

It's a popular adornment to make some sort of statement, I suppose (draping one's self with meat; though to what, I have no idea).

The most expensive cheese sandwich you'll ever want to eat

crafted by chef Martin Blunos (as seen on TV!) and available at the Frome Cheese Show in Somerset:
The chef used a £5 loaf of sourdough dressed with extra virgin olive oil and then layered cheese, slices of quail’s egg, heirloom black tomato, epicure apple, and fresh figs.

He added dainty mustard red frills, pea shoots and red amaranth for a salad layer and topped the whole masterpiece with edible gold dust.

This sumptuous snack will set you back a cool $178 (£110).

Designed by Yunyeen Yong (Australia)
Jooze is a fictional company that manufactures fresh fruit juices, catered especially to kindergarten and primary school students. It is a company that believes that healthy eating habits should begin at a very young age.

The shape of the logo is inspired by the shape of a sliced fruit, and the handwritten typeface used is to portray a sense of fun, hands-on personality and characteristic that appeals to kids and toddlers. The logo also consists of singular bright colours, which may vary depending on the flavour of the juice. This would hopefully be a recognisable icon whereby children can relate and connect to the brand.

A simplified illustration of the fruits are to further clarify the flavours, to add visual aesthetics, and to appeal and connect to the target audience.

The juice box is shaped in an unconventional way to incorporate the essence of the logo, to gain instant recognition from the audience, and to capture their attention, especially if this product is placed alongside other juices on the supermarket shelves.”

meals created from deals

While some foodies love to cook, and others go to fine restaurants, NYC-based Erik Trinidad expresses his love of all things edible by taking fast food menu items from restaurants like McDonald’s and Taco Bell, turning them into gourmet-looking meals and posting the results on his site FancyFastFood.com. Originally just a joke with friends, his first creation was a McDonald’s Big Mac and fries combo meal that he turned into a fancy steak and potatoes dish. But his project got such rave reviews, that he kept at it. Today, his site it full of creative reinventions of fast food items and he's even writing a book, The Fancy Fast Food Cookbook: Mock Recipes with No Bun Intended. WD rounded up our favorites, so take a look at these 10 works of culinary art.

Osso BuKko (Burger King)
http://i52.tinypic.com/2ih2weg.jpg
It’s unclear why Burger King started serving fire-grilled ribs in the first place, but leave it to Trinidad to turn them into a meal
fit for a king. To recreate Osso Buco, a traditional Italian dish made with veal shanks, browned and simmered with tomatoes
and vegetables, Trinidad made a reduction of Dr Pepper, barbeque sauce and ketchup, before adding in onion rings
(stripped of their breading), carrots and chopped greens from a BK garden salad. He then added the ribs and simmered,
after which he blended the French fries into a mashed potato consistency before plating everything and drizzling with sauce.

Spicy Chicken Sushi (Popeyes Chicken)
http://i55.tinypic.com/4ru5ps.jpg
Using a Popeyes Chicken meal with two pieces of Bonafide spicy fried chicken, one biscuit, coleslaw, one large Coke, one
loaded chicken wrap, a side each of red beans and rice, Popeyes Louisiana hot sauce and wasabi paste to garnish,
Trinidad made the sushi rolls with white rice soaked in a coke reduction and stuffed with red beans and rice,
accompanied by chopped chicken atop cut-up biscuits to resemble raw sushi pieces.

Tacobellini (Taco Bell)
http://i56.tinypic.com/rtmfra.jpg
Creating his favorite dish to date, Trinidad says he “thought outside the tortilla” when he decided to turn Taco Bell fare into
the beloved Italian pasta tortellini. Using two Burrito Supremes, one beef soft taco, one large Sierra Mist soda, packets of hot
sauce and parsley, Trinidad carefully extracted the burrito and taco stuffing and mixed it in a bowl before rinsing each tortilla
and steaming to soften. After cutting the tortillas into small circles, he refilled with the stuffing before folding into a tortellini
shape. He then covered them in sauce and garnished with parsley, pouring the Sierra Mist into a wine glass for a classier look.

CONTAINER - without thought, by naoto fukasawa

author's comments:
what comes into mind when people hear the word 'container'?
is there a clear cut image held in common by everyone?
is the shape of a container dependent on its contents?
or do people look at a container and think,
'if it's this shape, then I want to put X in it'?
there's an appeal to containers, regardless of what's in them.
we came up with various designs when discussing just what that appeal was.
we searched out the soul of this appeal that was 'effortlessly good'.

[instructional ; recipe]

author's comments: (Amy Wisniewski)
Whether this [consumable] centerpiece incites horror, amazement, or
confusion when it’s served, it’s certain to evoke some kind of outburst.

Warning: This dish is not recommended for people who require an inch of space between food groups.

INGREDIENTS 1 roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated gingerbread or peanut butter cookies
64 small pretzel twists 64 semisweet chocolate chips (about 1/4 cup)
16 candied cherries, cut in half, if desired

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oven to 350°F. With hands, shape roll of cookie dough into triangle-shaped log. (If dough is too soft to cut, place in freezer 30 minutes.)
2. With thin sharp knife, cut dough into 32 (1/4-inch-thick) triangular slices; on ungreased cookie sheets, place 2 inches apart. Place 2 pretzel twists on each triangle near corners for antlers. 3. Bake 7 to 11 minutes or until set. While warm, lightly press 2 chocolate chips into each cookie for eyes and 1 cherry half for nose. Remove from cookie sheets. Let stand until chocolate chips are set, about 15 minutes. Store between sheets of waxed paper in tightly covered container.

I'm not sure if I can avoid sharing some of those other bento creations found in your link, 'cause some of them are just as creative as other "bento artists" in which I've featured here before. They are really cool.

The above? It is the Xmas !!! Bento box, crafted by nonachan. She actually provides a basic recipe of the ingredients and food that was made in the preparation of the bento. There's also a second fbento box she made as well.

Chocolatier Carves World Heritage Monuments in White Chocolate
Mirco Della Vechia, one of Italy’s most talented chocolatiers, has created a series of replicas of world heritage monuments carved in white chocolate.

Demonstrating immense talent and patience, Della Vechia has taken huge blocks of chocolate and, using a series of fine carving tools, turned them
into sweet models most people would love to sink their teeth into. The Chocolate World Heritage Monuments collection, currently on display at a
Hong Kong shopping mall, features white chocolate models of famous landmarks, such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum, Stonehenge,
the Parthenon, or Egypt’s Abu Simbel.

Apart from this incredible collection of chocolate models, Mirco Della Vechia also holds the Guinness record for the largest chocolate sculpture in the world
– a 1.5-meter-tall, 2.5-meter-long and 5.37-ton-heavy replica of the Dome of Milan.
