Amazingly high-fat, intense-flavor dish

Have a look at this and see if you can figure out what it is. It comes from a blog post titled "When the Chef is trying to kill you:"

That, my friends, is a foie gras jelly donut. Yes, you read that right. To get an idea of what the experience was like, click here.

genuinegirly 07-15-2009 02:50 PM

Er, that looks absolutely disgusting.
I enjoyed the descriptive article you linked.

BadNick 07-15-2009 06:31 PM

I knew part of it was foie gras, which I love...poor goose...but I didn't recognize the donut. I'm sure I would love that.

Willravel 07-15-2009 06:49 PM

God is dead.

DaniGirl 07-15-2009 08:10 PM

EEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWw goose?

shakran 07-15-2009 09:21 PM

I'm not exactly skinny. But I wouldn't eat that. I don't care if it tastes good or not. It's kind of like the hamburger someone made with Krispy Kremes. Might be awesome. Might be the best thing I'd ever taste. But I won't eat it. I do have SOME principles ;)

Willravel 07-15-2009 09:23 PM

I'd eat a whole bag of them in my boxers watching Star Trek: TNG reruns. Then again, I've put on weight recently.

Charlatan 07-15-2009 09:34 PM

I love Foie Gras and would gladly eat it... I'd give the doughnut a try. Chances are they'd go well together.

It's not like you would eat this every day or even more than once.

i would if i could.

LordEden 07-16-2009 08:46 AM

I love me some Foie Gras, I was hesitant when I learned what it was and how it was made... but my god is it fucking good. I've had a foie gras bushetta thing that was out of this world. My old chef loved it on bread and nothing else.

I'd eat this in a heartbeat.

You ever see that episode of No Reservations when he goes to Canada and that chef tried to kill him with Foie Gras? EVERYTHING that guy made looked SOOOO good.

LoganSnake 07-16-2009 01:46 PM

I have never had a foie gras, but that looks delicious. I would definitely try it.

squeeeb 07-16-2009 02:15 PM

foie gras, while actually liver, isnt anything like liver at all. it's absolutely wonderful, and if you EVER get a chance to try it, take that chance.

Mantrum?

Yeah, I love foie gras even though it's incredibly unhealthy. I only have it maybe once a year, and I try to surround the meal with a lot of especially healthy eating. And I hurt my back last year and it's taking a long time to heal, so I've ballooned from 170ish to about 190ish.

and yet, in my mind, you are still a young sean connery

Willravel 07-16-2009 03:01 PM

Sean Connery was probably around 190 when he was cast in Dr. No.

Then again, I doubt he would have used the thumbsup smiley.

BadNick 07-17-2009 08:36 AM

when I'm jones'ing for some foie gras but the locals don't have it, our local cheese/gourmet shop has duck liver pate' that is great and costs less.

For a few bucks they make me an awesome sandwich of duck liver pate' on a crusty little bread roll, with a touch of sweet/sour mustard ...when I think about that, it has most of the components of loquitur's posted item: crispiness, sweetness, a bit of subtle liver & mustard bitterness, the buttery smoothness of a good, high-fat pate' or foie gras. Now it's off to lunch I go.

loquitur 07-17-2009 08:55 AM

Foie gras tastes nothing at all like liver. It is totally unique. But with some red wine on the side and some seared vegetables there is nothing like it. Never had it with a jelly donut, though. I'm sure the French would be horrified.

It's not just the French.

Charlatan 07-18-2009 01:08 AM

What's to be horrified about? I am sure the French, on the contrary, would be interested in this. They *might* poo poo it out of hand just because it's American but I bet most would dig in. Foie gras is a lovely velvety goodness and the sweetness of the doughnut would probably work nicely with it.

I've had Foie with a blueberry coulis and it was really nice. The sweet of the blueberries helped lift some of the richness of the Foie.

Lord Eden... the Chef that tried to kill Bourdain with Foie Gras was Chef Martin Picard. He is a Quebequois restaurateur and runs Au Pied de Cochon. Check out the link and check out not only the menu but the cool T-Shirts. I want one.

i have a recipe for chicken livers with blueberry vinegar. haven't tried it yet, but it sounds pretty good. blueberry and liver must be a naturally good paring.

Zeraph 07-18-2009 09:34 AM

Looks yummy, I'd try it.

wolf 07-22-2009 04:45 AM

I'm a firm believer in 'you only live once' so, yeah... I'd try it.

Charlatan 07-22-2009 05:00 PM

Last night I had foie gras with a toasted sweet bread and butternut squash puree... I think the sweet bread was a brioche of some sort.

Not too dissimilar... maybe a little less sweet than the dish above.

Regardless, it was excellent.

I am so glad all the eating here is boring and that I can't afford to go visit my brothers in Portland right now..... mmmmm fat

Mmmmm. That looks absolutely delicious. Two please!

Wow, you weren't kidding about trying to kill him. I would have keeled over halfway through:

cellophanedeity 07-28-2009 10:18 AM

It's hard to think of food that is as popular and as disgusting as Foie Gras.

Gross gross gross.

Chingal0 09-18-2009 10:19 AM

That's one hell of a meal.. Looks and sounds incredible. And yes, I would gladly enjoy the dish pictured. Foie is definitely a rarity in my diet, but there are a few restaurants around town that do it well enough to make it more than a once a year affair.
