So I have this really weird problem with cooking and eating.

It's my job. I do it all day long. I love it. I don't wanna do anything else with my life.

So, when I cook at home for my girlfriend and I or my family I spend so much time preparing everything and dealing with the food that when it comes time to eat... I don't want to. I'm not hungry anymore. So, tonight my I'm cooking steaks on the grill with a red wine reduction, fried potatoes, salad, and broccoli with cheese sauce for my girlfriend and friend of ours (Who happens to be hot as fuck. Two hot girls drinkin' wine. The night could end very well for me.) and me. All from scratch. Spared no expense. And I know that when we sit down to eat I'll take maybe two bites of everything and stop.

I think it's because I'm not use to eating what I cook. At work I pump out food at a frantic pace. I make it and someone else eats it. I don't cook to eat. I cook to feed. When I lived alone I never cooked. I'd rather have a PBJ then even look at the stove. But now that I'm cooking for two... (And she kind of expects me to make this huge fancy meals because of my career choice.)

It happens with my family too. I'll cook a big meal for a holiday or birthday or any other type of celebration. See, I'm also expected to cook for all events because of my career choice. Don't get me wrong, I love to treat my family and friends to the best food possible. I just would like them to come into my restaurant. Anyway, Last Christmas I cook most of the meal myself. And when it came time to eat, I stayed in the kitchen to do dishes. It's just more at home for me to be a "gloried servant."

So does anyone else have this problem? And I don't really think it's a problem. I just find it odd.

...yes, the same thing happens to me but i never really gave it much thought....until now that you've mentioned it. Why is that?

...i seem to make up for lost time, somewhat, when i'm putting the food away and eat that last bite in the serving dish or pick off a piece of something before bagging it up. Maybe it takes awhile for the saturation of aromas from the cooking to dissipate enough to feel hunger.

I totally have this problem too. Whenever I am making something special or a big meal, I find that I am just not hungry when it comes time to eat.

Part of it is that I've been tasting the food as it goes out but that's not all of it. I am not positive but I think it might be that I'd rather just see people enjoy what I've made rather than enjoy it myself.

That kinda makes me go hmmmm.

Anyway, I too am the cook for the family. All celebrations, holidays and just when they want to get together.

I think part of not wanting to eat what you cook is because you cook all the time, you get to eat the type of food you want all the time so what you are making isn't special.

It's special to those you are cooking for because they don't eat like that every day. That's why they ask you to cook, they know what you will make them will be spectacular and it's "new" to them. But to you it's not.

That and all the tasting, correcting seasonings etc. will make you not hungry when the meal is finished.

For those of us who cook, the fun is in the cooking, and watching others enjoy the fruits of our labor, not in the eating.

i love to cook and have the same thing. i think it's a little nerve-wracking to cook for folk who are close to you in a dinner party situation. it' takes me a few minutes to wind down and actually want to eat. along the way, i figured out that drinking while cooking is probably not a good idea. well that and ending up stupid drunk when other people are just sitting down to eat. and forgetting courses on the stove or in the oven. ok so it took me a while. whatever.

Sounds like a multi-faceted dillema.
Are you critical of your SO's cooking, or does she simply feel inadequate cooking for you?

Next time there's a big family meal, ask who's cooking. When they admit they assume you would want to, tell them you'd like a break and that you wouldn't mind helping someone else plan a menu.

As for not wanting to eat what you cook - I get that myself. I'll usually set a plate aside to reheat when I'm really hungry.

I'm in the same boat much of the time, WK. I love cooking. I'm usually pretty damn good at it.
And people will ask me to, but in my situation, I usually offer to bring something because I don't have to do it every day. If I did, then it would be a whole different ballgame. I don't know that I would still enjoy cooking for my loved one/ones.
When it comes to eating the food, I find much less enjoyment in consumption than production. Part of my issue is my own body image and looking at my portion sizes, when I have been tasting somewhat most of the time to make sure I've got things right.
Part of it is that I just don't like to eat much anymore. After I've labored and put all of my emotion into the activity (that I choose and LOVE to do), I'm kinda drained.
I eat because my body needs it and/or to be sociable. But the best part to me is the production part and watching others enjoy the food.

Yeah... sorry. The girlfriend and I tried. The other girl wasn't responding to it. Oh well, next time.
