Food that makes you happy to be alive...

I just had to start this because I just ate one of my favorite foods ever for lunch, a cheese steak. I know what you are thinking, no one in Michigan could know how to make a proper cheese steak, it's too far away from Philly.

You'd be wrong though, there are a few places around here that can do it properly, and by properly I mean an unrecognizable wad of steak, onions and cheese crammed into a bun so tightly that the bun has been compressed down to only about three millimeters thick, and then loaded into a paper bag which becomes transparent from grease almost immediately. That small-seeming thing has enough calories to power me for days on end. That's the stuff.

So, what food does this for y'all?

Ciall 04-21-2003 07:53 AM

Curry.

Oh God thank you for curry.

Chicken Madras I love you !!

I must marry an indian woman.

zf0enix 04-21-2003 08:46 AM

I absolutely LOVE home made cheeseburgers with all the fixin's, including sautéed onions!! And chicken fettuccine Alfredo
! But I try not to have more than one or two of either a year. Old age and slow metebolism is a bitch.

Yum. I'm hungry!

JohneySupernuts 04-21-2003 09:02 AM

with my food budget I can afford a decent porterhouse perhaps once per moon, sometimes I purposefully deprive myself, and then when the temptation is too strong I make it. its like giving the contestants on survivor a steak with no penalties

Quadraton 04-21-2003 09:30 AM

Meat pies, or tortieres as they call them.

It's always been a Christmas tradition in my family, and my mom makes the best meat pies in the world. It's making me drool just thinking about them right now.

snowy 04-21-2003 09:45 AM

My mom's garlic mashed potatoes. Ohhh yeah. Now that's what I call comfort food. Put that alongside a filet mignon, and you have the best dinner ever. :)

Chug 04-21-2003 10:00 AM

I love cheese cakes! They are wonderful and tastes great!

Soda_BoB 04-21-2003 10:21 PM

I feel hungry now :p

greytone 04-22-2003 04:15 AM

I can not pick just one.

A high quality hamburger. Mom's fried chicken and mashed potatos. A holiday turkey. Really good hash browns. Chicken enchiladas with salsa verde. The list is endless.

Oh, olives, just about any kind of olive.

sierra2774 04-22-2003 09:12 AM

Sesame Chicken. I really love that dish, but I am a huge fan of Chinese food.

I would also have to add Chicken Parmesean. My second favorite.

Cynthetiq 04-22-2003 09:18 AM

some tocino, fried rice, and an egg... now that's a drunk asian man's road to sobriety and good sleep.

paddyjoe 04-23-2003 02:06 PM

It has to be my wifes homemade BBQ sauce. No matter what food I put that on, it's like a slice of heaven.

edmos1 04-23-2003 03:49 PM

I have to agree that the Porterhouse is the king of steaks, one half a new york, the other half Filet. one porterhouse = complete meal

bubbaspike 04-23-2003 04:56 PM

Big Mac
Quarterpounder w/cheese

yabobo 04-24-2003 03:39 AM

darkure 04-24-2003 04:00 AM

Bastilla most definitely. The oh so delicious and then they add cinnamon and confectioner's sugar on top. Chicken, sugar, cinnamon. almonds, eggs, and almonds all wrapped in leaves of a philo-like dough.

blkdmnd 04-24-2003 07:56 PM

Pork tenderloin. Marinate it for about 12 hrs in a worcestire or soy or teriyaki sauce, cook for about 45 mins on about 375. Tender, juicy, great as leftovers. Ummmmmmm....

vermin 04-24-2003 08:22 PM

T-bone grilled over charcoal. Medium rare. Baked potato w/sour cream.

and

Chicken flavored Rice-a-roni w/stir-fried pieces of chicken breast, broccoli, water chestnuts, and onion powder.

BubblegumTeflon 04-25-2003 04:25 AM

home-grilled hamburgers soaked in A1 steak sauce. Soaked. With sauteed onions and chunky grated cheddar. Crispy Fries with Heinz-57 make it absolute perfection.

digby 04-25-2003 12:20 PM

really good crawfish ettoufe

Somenosuke 04-26-2003 11:51 AM

Grilled chicken fettucine alfredo.
Most places around here can't do a decent job at it, unfortunately.

I had some homemade caramel apple ice cream at this ice cream shop while I was out of town over spring break.. Oh. My. God. I was so sad because I couldn't finish the cone, but it was sooo good.

REAL Italian spaghetti with real grated parmesean and mozzarella cheese. When I went to Italy in 10th grade, that was the first thing I ate there. I was in heaven.

Well because it's fresh on my mind, lamb. I was at a bar last night with two friends, and the waitress, for some strange reason, had a big pile of meat in the beer fridge (packaged and still good, of course). I left spending $5 for $20 worth of lamb chops. Though I spent a mint on drinks. *A real meat market, that bar, har har*
Oh, and roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and gravy is good too.
And fish & chips w/ mushy peas, done proper.
Now you got me all drooling and stuff.

davik 04-28-2003 09:18 PM

There's alot of food I like, especially asian food (frankly with a few exceptions food doesn't get decent until you hit the middle east, and it gets better as you go east), but one of my favorites lately has been Katsudon, an absolutely amazing japanese pork dish. I posted the recipe a couple of days ago if anyone is interested.

warrrreagl 05-01-2003 11:31 AM

A dripping, greasy, truck stop cheeseburger!!!

RiceGuy 05-01-2003 01:27 PM

Cheese blintzes, oh god, cheese blintzes with fresh strawberries and blueberries. It's like sex on a plate.

spectre 05-01-2003 03:37 PM

Queso Fundido. It's one of those foods that'll double your chances of having a heart attack, but it's damned good. :D

Zotz 05-01-2003 06:16 PM

Jambalaya
Salsa & Chips
Ronzas (a local favorite)
Filet Mignon
Avocado
Margaritas (not food, but they make me happy to be alive)

spooney 05-01-2003 08:09 PM

A ribeye grilled over hickory wood and a Roso baked potato. I don't know if anyone else has ever heard of these but there is a resturaunt just down the road from me that serves them. They are a potato wrapped in brown paper and dropped in a pot of resin. The boiling resin bakes the potato and it produces the fluffiest, flakeyist baked potato ever.

Jadey 05-01-2003 08:38 PM

I'm a pizza fanatic.

The best I have ever had is a place called Leo's Pizza in
Jacksonville, Illinois. If you're ever that way, you have to try the Sicilian Stuffed pie. Simply amazing.

fienna 05-02-2003 06:23 AM

while the bufflao wings are good with bleu cheese dressing, the one true thing that i have never come close to topping is this shrimp appetizer that i only get at this restaurant in newark, NJ, called "spanish sangria" on the corner of magazine & rome streets. not only do they have AMAZING sangria, but their appetizer "Shrimp au Garlic" is friggin out of this world, and then some... if you are a garlic and a shrimp lover, i HIGHLY recommend getting this. and if you smear it on top of a buttered portuguese roll, it's even more sinfull. WOW.

ok, i'm like drooling all over the place now... i'll have to go there this weekend or something...

Hitchcock 05-02-2003 09:02 AM

Anything my mom makes; she's an awesome cook.

bundy 05-02-2003 06:53 PM

CUSTARD!!!

Somenosuke 05-02-2003 09:39 PM

Holy crap.. I can't believe I forgot Tiramisu! Best dessert ever if people know what the heck they're doing when they make it!

Loki 05-03-2003 06:21 AM

pangavan 05-05-2003 10:47 PM

My step-mother makes a cheesecake that I'd be willing to hurt fur-bearing woodland creatures to get to.

It is a traditional syle plain cheesecake with a grahmcracker crust but it is made on a sheet pan and is cut into 1.5" squares
