Monkie coming to Toronto Updated 2/18 w/ PICS

I showed my west coast love.. now time to show my east coast love!

I'll be off for the weekend of the American Thanksgiving (Thurs 11/26 and Friday 11/27) as well as a couple days before.

I was entertaining the idea of doing a detour from the WNY area over the border. I still haven't pinned everything down, but would anyone be available on Thurs 11/26 or Friday 11/27? I'd probably have the day wide open, mid-day would work best but I can potentially be flexible.

I miss all of you.. hoping with a little advance notice folks who might need the extra time to free up schedules can do it :)

So. Aberkok. Cello. Martian. Baraka_Guru. Fresnelley. Settie. Kramus. Charlatan's Gargoyle. I'm Coming :D

cellophanedeity 10-14-2009 06:19 PM

I'm in.

Martian 10-14-2009 06:23 PM

Well, since I've been getting after you to come back, I figure I'm pretty much obligated.

We'll say definitely maybe. The only thing that could potentially cause a problem with this is if I get a job and am unable to get the necessary day(s) off.

FuglyStick 10-14-2009 06:24 PM

Hide the Moosehead.

Baraka_Guru 10-14-2009 06:35 PM

Oi! This is great!

Nothing after 5 pm?

I could feasibly do midday, but my time would be limited.

dlish 10-14-2009 06:38 PM

why doesnt anyone live down my neck of the woods?

sounds like its gonna be fun!

amonkie 10-14-2009 06:41 PM

I'm pretty flexible on the times right now.. I'd just have my dog with me on the trip and probably have a friend watch him stateside for the day.

Throw out what works for you!

CinnamonGirl 10-14-2009 06:49 PM

I demand pictures!

Leto 10-14-2009 07:09 PM

can I come too? I could do lunch time.

Martian 10-14-2009 07:11 PM

The more the merrier.

Charlatan 10-14-2009 08:29 PM

(sigh)

aberkok 10-14-2009 09:09 PM

Thursdays I'm usually free until 2:30p.m. (can't re-schedule that commitment), but Friday is best. I'm free until 5 and I can re-schedule that thing.

I vote the Friday.

kramus 10-14-2009 09:56 PM

Thursdays are kid things days - that means I'm out of the picture after about 2:15 pm. Friday is good from mid morning right up till I fetch my Lady at the end of the day, and depending on what's what I may be able to fetch her right on over to Monkie :)

be sure to pm me so I don't put on my dunce hat and forget when it's The Day.

ps - too bad it wasn't this weekend Amonkie. The Bayview Art Tour is happening from noon till 5 Saturday and Sunday, and my home is all set up for folks to peruse my Wonder and Whimsy art. I'm actually hoping a couple of people find themselves tuned in to the art enough that it feels like they've entered a Cave of Wonders

fresnelly 10-15-2009 05:07 AM

A Thursday lunch would work for me better than Friday. :)

GreyWolf 10-15-2009 06:43 AM

Hope you enjoy Toronto. Great city to visit/party. But, as a true East Coaster, I'd like to point out TO is smack in the middle of the Great Central Canadian Wilderness, far from the civilised, pleasant life here on the east coast.

Leto 10-15-2009 08:58 AM

That's right GreyWolf, We are not at the East Coast. Far from that beautiful place. But I prefer to mark the wilderness as starting just north of Eglinton Ave.

Charlatan 10-15-2009 04:23 PM

For many, the wilderness is north of bloor, east of the DVP and west of Dufferin...

I don't ascribe to that.

amonkie 10-16-2009 03:27 AM

So far it sounds like Friday has the most votes. Good to know!

I'll update in another couple weeks, but if anything changes for you folks or if there's anyone else interested, chime in! I would love to see you!

The only thing I absolutely must do on my visit is pay Cornelius a visit... the rest is open.

And Kramus... Your exhibit showing is what made me come up with this idea.. the last time I was in Toronto was for your first showing, i believe??!

Charlatan 10-16-2009 04:28 AM

I need to see pictures of the visit, please.

I've been gazing at the house on Street View but it's just not the same.

PonyPotato 10-16-2009 07:34 AM

Can I come too?

Leto 10-16-2009 07:39 AM

you better! what do you think? is it a possibility?

amonkie 10-16-2009 03:38 PM

Pony - sure! Catch me and we can work out some details...

Do I dare post a pic from the last time Monkie visited?

We were all so young then...

Leto 10-19-2009 07:02 AM

I think you should.

Charlatan 10-19-2009 04:04 PM

Definitely post the older pictures.

fresnelly 10-19-2009 04:13 PM

Don't say I didn't warn you!

Charlatan 10-26-2009 04:30 PM

Wow... winter clothing. I haven't worn winter clothing since then.

Good memories.

Martian 10-28-2009 09:35 PM

A toque like that, and you haven't worn it once since then?

Man, that seems like it was so long ago. I guess because it kinda was.

amonkie 10-29-2009 02:54 AM

Hey guys... I don't often do this, but I have a change of plans. Which means the roadtrip is out for this year. Now that I know you folks would all show up again someday, I'm going to shoot for a trip when its a little warmer and the weather is not such a vicious variable to have to consider for the trip. I've already done 3 days of driving in a blizzard. NEVER AGAIN. lol.

You guys should all still get together though!! You have enough pictures of me you could do a cutout.

I should have been clearer... I haven't worn it since that winter. That was my last winter. I've been living in perpetual summer since then.

I do have it with me though, just in case there is an outbreak of snow in the tropics.

What a bummer that Monkie is canceling. I agree with her. You guys should try to get together regardless. At worst, you should try for the post Christmas lunch. Both Monkie and I will be there in spirit.

Martian 10-29-2009 05:40 PM

That is sad. The monkie thing I mean, although the toque situation is also unfortunate.

If amonkie won't be there, my ability to attend is once more thrown into doubt. The key issue is getting home again -- Ms. monkie had graciously offered to give me a lift (even knowing it was significantly out of her way), and without that to fall back on the whole transportation issue becomes more complicated.

Days like this I miss having a car of my own.

amonkie: Don't think you're off the hook. You owe us a visit now.

Everyone else: Decide on a date and time, if you still want to do this. I will let you all know if I'm available as soon as I can figure that out for myself.

Baraka_Guru 10-29-2009 06:01 PM

Well, I'm sorry to hear it, Monkie.

But we are overdue for a Toronto event.

Martian 11-04-2009 04:03 PM

Yo peeps!

Are there still plans in the works for a meeting?

I'm willing to attend, but the end of November is fast approaching and I need to know if/when this is happening.

Worst case scenario for me -- I can get a round-trip bus ticket. That puts me in Toronto at 12:30ish, and on the bus home around 5. Or I can use this as an excuse to finally go see my sister's new place and crash with her overnight, giving me the evening.

Let's get something moving here. aberkok and Baraka_Guru are awesome, but it'd be nice to have more than just the three of us this time around.

amonkie 01-22-2010 06:35 AM

YO!!

I am making good on my promise to get my ass back North of the Border.

as of right this minute, I will be in Toronto Saturday February 13 thru the morning of Sunday Feb 14.

I have a Suite booked at Clarion Suites Selby Downtown (592 Sherbourne Street , Toronto, ON, CA, M4X 1L4).

SO... party pad? I will have a car and can round up folks near the city limits and get them into town. I've got the room covered, but if anyone needs a place to crash or wants to crash, fine with me, just chip in a few if you can :). There is parking at the hotel, but it is $15 a day, not sure what the short term parking rate is.

Who loves their monkie?? And pony - if you still want to come, meet me in Toronto.

Baraka_Guru 01-22-2010 07:18 AM

WhaaaaaaAAAT?! :surprised:

PonyPotato 01-22-2010 07:27 AM

Sorry everyone, I don't think I want to give up Valentine's Day with my man to make a long drive up north. :)

The_Jazz 01-22-2010 07:38 AM

Well, there goes my motivation to attend on the off chance of an orgy.

That's a funny name for your cock.

Would my presence boost your motivation Jazz? 'Cause I'll be around then.

amonkie 01-22-2010 10:55 AM

Annnnnd I just got Friday off, so this means if my bestest friend that is the other reason why I'm making this trip loves me, I have a place for the pooch for the day. May still keep the room for now, but that opens up the plan!

Should be able to confirm my dogless state by later today.

EDIT - UPDATE.

I'm dog free! So that means I'm pretty much getting into Toronto area around lunchtime/afternoon, and free for whatever till Sunday morning.

Who's in?

Sending PM's to the TO area right now...

aberkok 01-23-2010 06:36 PM

Definitely in! I'm teaching the Saturday morning from 10am - 2pm, but otherwise I am down - even for a potential overnight party.

amonkie 01-28-2010 03:25 PM

So from sounds of it, I'll probably be in the Toronto area by noonish on Saturday.

The only thing on my agenda is a good time with you fine folks, and a visit to a special gargoyle.

So we have Aberkok, Cellophanedeity... anyone else confirmed?

I can do some chauffering but if I could have a headsup who and how many so I make sure I have room, that would be great.

Baraka_Guru 01-28-2010 03:35 PM

I'm in.

Martian 01-28-2010 03:36 PM

You forgot me.

I'm going to double check this with Mags (if she doesn't see this first). I didn't realize in the initial planning stages that this was Valentine's day weekend. I don't foresee an issue with that, though -- either I'll come back on Sunday or we'll spend the weekend in Toronto and do stuff there.

amonkie 01-28-2010 03:37 PM

Martian - the hotel I grabbed is a Suite with separate living room/bedroom - if you guys are interested and your sis doesn't have space for both of you, I'd be happy to let you guys have the bedroom.

Fly 01-28-2010 09:27 PM

see..........total sweetheart.........^^^^^

Martian 01-28-2010 09:30 PM

It's confirmed -- Mags and I will be coming to Toronto for this.

I don't anticipate that it'll be a problem staying with the fam, but it's good to have a backup. I appreciate the offer.

Martian 01-29-2010 06:58 PM

Update -- We will be in Toronto around noon, and will be able to stay with my sister over night. You can have your bed, monkie.

Can we nail down some times? Magpie wants to squeeze in a visit with some of her friends, and I'd like to spend some time actually visiting with my sister too, if possible. If I know when/where/what we're doing, it'll be easier to arrange it all to everyone's satisfaction.

Any ideas from the actual Torontonians?

kramus 01-29-2010 08:00 PM

I'm in for an afternooner Saturday :) My boys are not in that weekend, and Saturdays are kid-free when it comes to my Lady's youngsters. So, all I need to do is pull a few hours away from the prep I'm doing for the end of that month - and Monkie in town at the same time I'm free is an awesome excuse for a break

amonkie 01-30-2010 12:37 PM

Awesome!

What about something early afternoon for starters... leading into dinner for folks who can hang around that long, or a place for folks with afternoon plans to join us later?

Ie:

2-3pm meetup at coffeehouse or something similar...

6pm dinner - Something yummy

9pm - grab drinks somewhere

I'm totally open to folks just stopping by for an hour or hangin with me till the weeeee hours :)

My hotel is just off the Sherbourne Subway stop on Bloor, so I can get around the city pretty easily car free. Whats central for everyone?

Baraka_Guru 01-30-2010 02:16 PM

I'm open to the location, since I'm close to the subway.

I'm open to the timing, but I have a 10-hour window because my dog will likely be home alone....so whatever works best. If it's evening, the dog might not be an issue.

I could always go home in between.

amonkie 01-30-2010 02:45 PM

Where all did you guys do your holiday gift exchange a few years back? That seemed like a cozy space you were all able to get to and had enough room to have a larger group of folks.

As for dinner and after ... you guys live here, speak up :)

And just a running head count - if numbers/texting is a good way to communicate once the day of has arrived, let me know and i'll add ya to my list :)

Amonkie
Martian (and magpie?)
Cello
Settie
Baraka Guru
Fresnelly
Kramus
Aberkok
Leto?

Leto 02-01-2010 04:55 AM

jumping in here... is your arrival this weekend? I think that the place of the gift exchange meeting was up by U of T, a pub just north of Bloor and west of Avenue Road.

amonkie 02-01-2010 07:04 AM

Hi Leto!

it is next saturday (feb 13).

Martian 02-04-2010 02:55 PM

So to be clear, we're up for dinner and/or afternoon activities. Evening stuff will likely be out for us, as I'll want to visit with family as well.

We'll be coming into Toronto from the East -- I was planning on taking the 401, but if anyone needs transportation that can easily be altered.

I will PM you Magpie's cell number, Ms. Monkie. She has a texting plan, and I'll be driving, so you'll want to communicate with her.

Magpie has suggested bowling as a possible activity.

amonkie 02-04-2010 05:22 PM

I tried Danforth Bowl, but they're booked all day the 13th. That was the only one TTC friendly if any folks were coming that way.

I'm free for rides too.

I'm working on getting Mr. Roachboy on board.. and promised him if he came we'd got to Prince of Egypt on Danforth (135 Danforth Ave) . However some sites are saying they closed.. can anyone confirm? If no one else is gonna chime in on dinner.. any objections to Bright Pearl near Kensington Market?

I'm even up for a board game afternoon - I can bring some of my games and cards with me.

Sounds like the best evening plans after dinner are a BYOB back to the Clarion Suites (Sherbourne and Bloor). That seems to be the most cost effective and best ambience for the deaf person so I can hear us talking, lol!

---------- Post added at 07:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:54 PM ----------

Did some Sleuthing.. would you guys recommend Duke of York for an afternoon of board/card games? Think this is where you had your Xmas exchange back in the day.

aberkok 02-05-2010 07:13 PM

I would recommend the Duke. Sorry... I should be helping more with this stuff. I will now.

EDIT: Prince of Egypt is definitely closed (I live nearby and walk past where it used to be on a weekly basis).

Anyone up for Ethiopian? I know a place or two that are excellent.

amonkie 02-05-2010 09:30 PM

I Love ethiopian too! Definitely group sharing friendly as well.

Can you throw up the Ethopian places Aberkok for co-ordination options? I'm flexible. What do you guys think?

Sounds like current options are Bright Pearl or an Ethiopian Suggestion.

kramus 02-06-2010 05:53 AM

I'm a fan of the Pearl myself - but anything TTC friendly works.

fresnelly 02-06-2010 09:05 AM

Unfortunately my wife is away on business while you're here and I'm alone with the kids so I can't commit until I sort out a babysitter.

Martian 02-06-2010 11:08 AM

I've been to the Pearl and know that I like it and can eat most of what they serve. On the other hand, I've never tried Ethiopian, so I'd be open to that too.

If I were to cast a vote I'd say Bright Pearl on the sole basis of familiarity. I don't have a strong preference, though.

fresnelly, find a babysitter. I haven't seen you in almost as long as I haven't seen monkie, and you don't have the excuse of being in another country.

Do it.

aberkok, what was that coffee place we went to last time? It might be a bit small for the entire group, but it doesn't seem like a bad hangout spot if we end up with a smaller number for lunch/afternoon stuff.

amonkie 02-06-2010 11:21 AM

Any objections if we do Bright Pearl then? That seems to be the consensus, and it looks yummy.

And an update from the lovely Cello.. she'll be able to join us after dinner once she's off work.

Baraka_Guru 02-06-2010 11:23 AM

No objections here. I can eat sub-standard food and still enjoy it. The key is in meeting up with you guys.

cellophanedeity 02-09-2010 05:16 PM

Sorry it took me so long to get here!

I'm working until 9:30 on Saturday, but I'll head right over to wherever you guys are right after. I live down the street from the hotel Monkie's staying in, so I can stumble home later :)

amonkie 02-09-2010 05:40 PM

Ok!

So the plan:

3pm - Duke of York

6pm - Bright Pearl

After dinner - Monkie's place at Clarion Suites

If you're not able to meet up with us during the day, PM me if we haven't already exchanged numbers so folks don't get lost along the way!

So Excited!! Just keep this dratted snow off the roads....

Baraka_Guru 02-09-2010 05:45 PM

I'll meet you guys at the Bright Pearl.

aberkok 02-09-2010 06:57 PM

Cool - I'll be at the Duke at about... 3:30

fresnelly 02-09-2010 08:32 PM

Looks like I've got a babysitter for dinner+ so I should be able to join up at the Bright Pearl.

Mmmmm...Dim Sum!

settie 02-12-2010 09:54 AM

I don't think I'll be able to make it. :(

Backing out at the last minute? Lame, settie. Very lame.

amonkie doesn't bite, if that's what you're worried about. At least, not unless you ask her to.

Our arrival time is variable, and will depend mostly on how long it takes me to do the things I need to do. I'm estimating in the 12:00 to 1:00 range. I'm also anticipating that we'll be at the Bright Pearl and may be able to stick around for post-Bright Pearl activities for some time, although probably not excessively late. Say, nine-ish.

amonkie 02-13-2010 11:06 AM

Yo! Settie!!! You shoulda said something, I would have grabbed you.

Here. Checked In. If no one is going to be at Duke right at 3, I should be there by 3:30 as well.

If you gave me your number I have it written down/in my phone.. see you in a little bit!

noodle 02-13-2010 11:38 AM

Ahem.
I expect some Skyping from the hotel room this evening.
Or chat at least.

nice to see you all!

Charlatan 02-18-2010 06:30 PM

Photos! Sweet!

I really wish I could have been there. Thanks for pics of Cornelius and the Perk. I can't believe it's been four years since I was last there.

kramus 02-18-2010 07:12 PM

Glad your camera was able to regurgitate the pics. Wish I could have hung in there, but duty called (when it's daylight I'll take a photo of the finished piece - check the blog on my website Mark Johnson Fine Art - Wonder and Whimsy around 10 am tomorrow). I missed out on a Cello hug and a manly Baraka/Fresnelly greeting.

Awwww...I'm glad you got the pics back, monkie. These are awesome. Everyone's so damn cute!

settie 02-19-2010 04:45 AM

Agreed, everyone looks so damn cute!. :D
Maybe next time I'll be able to afford to drop in. ^_^

Looks like you guys had a great time! It's lovely to see you all. I need to go to Canada some time :)
