SF Bay Area Get-Together, Anyone?
Hey there folks!
In the past couple of months I have moved to the San Francisco Bay area (Berkeley). I'm now wondering how many TFP-ers are here, and if anyone wants to meet up. Any ideas for activities? I was thinking pizza and board games, but surely others have ideas, too. Let the discussion begin! (assuming I'm not the only one on this side of the planet)

Home!!!
How I wish I were there. If you guys get something going, let me know, and I'll see if I can arrange to be out there. I'd love to meet you guys, and see my family again. =) I know Willravel is out there, even though he's not mapped.

I'm going to be running through there next week...
Great America, Santa Cruz, Gilroy Garlic festival... those are the plans.

I'm also in Berkeley and I'm all for it. I'm not a big fan of most board games tbh but don't let me hold you down. Some places I've enjoyed:
Berkeley/East Bay Bear's Lair. Good food, great beer, I'm so pleased to have this place on the UC Berkeley campus. And I almost went an entire year living here without setting foot inside. All ages. Jupiter. Actually, I've never been inside but it looks and sounds pretty cool. Its 21+ after a certain time I believe 9pm. Not sure if age is an issue for us. If you want to go and you're under 21 let us know so we can find some place all ages. They apparently brew their own beer, some of which is also served at Bear's Lair. Ok, I guess I don't really know east bay outside of Berkeley. San Francisco Zeitgeist. Really awesome and well-known beer bar with a huge outdoor beer garden 21+ and they grill up some burgers too. Toronado. Another awesome and well-known beer bar 21+ with an equally awesome sausage shop next door. Probably wouldn't be good for a crowd bigger than 5 which iirc is what we had at the last one. In fact, Zeitgeist is probably better anyway just for the atmosphere; it can be a little stuffy at Toronado. 21st Amendment Brewery. In SOMA near AT&T Park, not the best location because if there's not a Giants game going on, it's pretty dead, and if there is a Giants game going on, there's no parking within 20 blocks, but they have tasty pizzas and decent beers. All ages. South Bay/Silicon Valley Ummm... the place for the last meetup was pretty good?? I don't venture down here much except for the occasional electronic dance music event. Hard to say what's a good date. Next week before Thursday might work, but we might not get anyone to show up on the relatively short notice. I will probably be out of town for 5-7 days in August, but not sure which. After that it's school and anything is probably good for a while.

Cool - it's great to know there's another one on the TFP that's here in Berkeley.
I'm 23, so the 21+ scene is just fine. I've heard of the Bear's Lair. It was pretty popular during the world cup. I'm in summer school, so life is pretty hectic. Weekday evenings work best for me, since I'm working most weekend evenings at a certain coffee shop on Oxford & Center. If we want to do something that requires planning, I was thinking sometime in August - perhaps the week of the 22nd. I have no car, so I'll need to either carpool or take BART into San Francisco if we find more people and meet up there. With Cynthetic coming to the area next week, maybe we could have a mini-get together one of these evenings. I'd be up for an evening away from studying.

I don't know much about what our plans are. We are going to Great America on Thurs or Friday. Saturday and Sunday or going to be more in the Gilroy/Santa Cruz area. I'm trying to make it up now....it's been really some time since I've been in that area. I did go to SF and Sac a couple years ago, but the lower pennisula... not in 20 years I think

I'm really busy this week finding a new place and moving among other things. Might be able to fit something in one night if Cyn will be in the area, but overall sometime in August would be better. Is anyone else planning to attend and if so what's good for you?

August 25th at Jupiter? Really any day will work equally well for me, but if weekdays are better for you we might be able to get more people out on a Friday.

I'm glad I didn't discover this thread too late. A meeting sounds terrific.
I used to live on northside as an undergrad and remained in Berkeley for another 5 years. Now I'm living down in Monterey but I come up the coast often. (Yeah I burn fossil fuels and I love to drive ... but how else am I going to see my best friend's 2 week old son way up in Hercules?) BTW. In terms of pizza it doesn't get any better than Zachary's on Solano Ave - try their stuffed special sometime. I'm not sure if it's the best place to hang out 'cause it's a little more like a restaurant than some other places. I haven't ventured back to my alma mater in years. What sort of boardgames were you thinking, genuinegirly? If anyone has any special dietary issues you ought to bring them forth. (e.g. veganism, gluten intolerance, peanut allergies, red meat only, can't eat foods beginning with the letter "Q", etc.) My weekends are pretty open. I work in the day. 25th and 27th are also fine for me.
Zachary's does have good pizza but for the purposes of a meetup I think it's better to go to a place that isn't insane like Zachary's on College or out of reasonable BART/walking range like Zachary's on Solano.

UPDATE: Nobody can make it so it's cancelled; I probably won't be there.
Well, if you will, I'll tentatively set the time and date for Sunday August 27th at 5 PM. If this doesn't work for you please do post and tell us what does. I want to see as many people here as possible! Not entirely sure about the location. It looks like Jupiter's menu is pretty small with a focus on pizza and beer. That's fine with me but if people are looking for more of a restaurant or something else entirely we could do that too. I'll probably go there to check it out this week.

I went to Jupiter today and it seems like a fine place for a meetup. (Is anyone still paying attention? Who is planning on coming to this?) It is located at 2181 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 [Google Map] You can take BART to [Downtown] Berkeley station. It's right there on the east side of Shattuck when you exit the station; you can't miss it. From 80/580, exit University Ave, go east for 2 miles, make a right on Shattuck, and it's 2 blocks from there.

Well, I'm still going to Jupiter Sunday even if no one else is. It's hard to plan this stuff when people don't post when they CAN go, only that they can't at specific times, and then it's a week delay to check another time. I will probably get a table outside; just go straight back when you enter and I'll make some stupid TFP sign or something. I guess just be late if you can, ha, so Coppertop/Fng won't miss everyone (if they are coming at all). If you get lost or you need to find us in Jupiter you can always give me a call. I called Jupiter and they said it's only 21+ after 8:00. I also PMed everyone on the board I could find who hasn't posted and who has left some evidence of living around here.

All right, it's dead, Jim. Six feet under, kicked the bucket, pushing up daisies. Don't go to Jupiter Sunday unless you just really wanted to go there.

Sorry guys, I only check TFP on Sundays, hence my week delay between, well, everything. For future reference, I work Sunday-Thursday, 8-5. Saturdays work best for me. Unfortunately after hitting the gym yesterday afternoon, I slept 13 hours last night. Yikes! So I wouldn't have gone last night either.
edit - I suppose I should have said that although Saturdays are best for me, this particular one wasn't. Sorry. |

Perhaps beating a dead horse, but I'll give it a shot. I just moved to Rockridge, on the Oakland/Berkeley border, and I need to meet me some new people. Who's up for it?
I've heard some good things about Albatross. It's apparently a fun bar with billiards and darts, etc., but you're also able to bring your own board games. Not sure if that's everyone's cup of team, but I wouldn't mind. Probably too short notice for the 7th (tomorrow)... but maybe soon?

Yeah sure I'm always up for something. In fact I'm in Rockridge a lot going to places on College (like Cactus Taqueria sometime this weekend). Nobody replied about the 7th and I'm going to be pretty busy anyway (unless you want to meetup at 1015 folsom ), so if people still wanted to plan something for all Bay Area people a time in advance would be good. I was just waiting for, like, one other person to say if the 7th, or any date, would be a good one and then I could PM other people to let them know.

FYI- The annual Campbell Pub Crawl is on Saturday the 18th. Might be worth considering as a TFP meetup of sorts. Plus, it serves the dual purpose of being a celebration of FngKestrel's birthday. Here are some pics from last year's event, when he turned 30.
I cannot do the 11th, so enjoy if you guys do it then. |

word on the street is that pigglet will be out in SanFran part of next week - Sunday night through Thursday morning. I've already taken note of the bars and whatnot up top in thread - if y'all get together during that time I may be able to make a run at it (although I'm technically out there on business, etc). If not, we'll see what your beer and pizza is worth.
